Throughout the corona virus pandemic, homeless figures have seemingly dropped on the streets of the UK.
As the government & local councils were forced to step in to house those in desperate needs, I took to the streets of Manchester to see what life was really like, for those living rough through the heights of a pandemic.
Although several schemes have been set up to house the homeless, the question remains.. why are there still so many people living on the streets of Manchester?
LOCKED OUT AFTER LOCKDOWN?

Meanwhile in London, some of those within Westminster council decided to throw what will amount to £6million into the creation of ‘The Mound’, a pile of scaffolding and turf that couldn’t look more artificial if they tried. A failed and terrible laughing stock of a ‘tourist attraction’ that serves no moral purpose as flagship stores in the same area have doorways lined with homeless people in sleeping bags or boxes every night, and people queue for food banks. Britain should be better better than this in 2021.

The government could help them ? it's proved it by furlonging all businesses in the UK when covid-19 it the UK so they can't say money is the problem And giving all them illegal dinghy divers the red carpet treatment when they come over the channel aswell charity should begin at home 🏠 But unfortunately them people who are in charge of the money 💰 are out of touch with reality 274000 people in the UK are homeless 😡 that figure shouldn't be as high as that in this day and age the government needs to get their finger out never mind spending 37 billion on track and trace which was an absolute load of BS

In every town and every city they are there. I live in Newcastle and work in the city centre. Every morning I walk down Northumberland Street and all the shop door ways have some poor soul sleeping in there. Its a sad state of society today that so many have nowhere to go, no where to sleep. Its heartbreaking

I'd say a good percentage of these people just want a bit of encouragement - someone to steer them in the right direction. Not been to Manchester for a few years but back in 2018 I remember Piccadilly gardens being overrun with homeless spice heads - it was so sad to see people living like this.

I was homeless twenty years ago, I met a man and ended up marrying him, I suffer with schizophrenia and depression and paranoid I will become homeless again, it is alwful and still have nightmares with what happened to me, I was reluctant to trust people but glad I did and now have four kids and a man who provides, I wish people could understand it is damm hard being on the street, rapes, abuse,no sleep etc it's absolutely soul wreaking makes you feel less of a person, not human , degraded, it's so cold and scary for them no matter if you are strong mentally or physically it wears you down badly, just to even giving them a packet of crisps and a little nice note or a chat would really be of value to them

Coffee for Craig got a "Queen's Award" - I hope that they chucked it back in her face. How dare the Royals patronise people like that, why don't they move into modest accommodation (hell, they can even keep a castle or two), and stop taking massive "wages" from the public purse each year. I think that Lizzie 2 gets paid over £30 million annually, as well as collecting other monies. Disgusting.

i know some of the people filmed here and clustrophobic problems make it difficult for them to stay indoors. being indoors gives them panic attacks. the sad conclusion iv come to over knowing street homeless people for many years is that the level of force needed to keep them indoors would rightly not be acceptable in a free democracy. patience, and keeping in touch until and if they are ever ready, is the slow and only way. that may take years, it may never happen, but it must be the persons decision and arresting people and court orders forcing them indoors always backfires.

And people thought homelessness was bad before or during the Pandemic, it is vastly worse now and was totally predictable. As interest rates soar to combat the inevitable inflation caused by Lockdowns, landlords are selling up en masse & leaving the Sector: causing Councils to go bust under the weight of the cost of emergency housing. It will only continue to get worse.

Government cuts have made homelessness worse. We are all one paycheck away from similar situations like this. Most private landlords won't accept tenants that are on benefits and council home waiting lists are getting longer. Margaret Thatcher's Government gave council tenants the right to buy their homes in the 80s and now Housing Association tenants are being given that right. It's lack of social housing which is more affordable for low income families that is causing these problems. Some of these rough sleepers find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. Even domestic abuse services have been cut all over the country and abused women and men are stuck with their abusive partners.

I wouldn't want them in my rental property either they don't pay the rent they destroy the place They make life a misery for their neighbours and often do drugs on the property and have all sorts of lowlifes coming and going day and night. What about the poor neighbours living next to them who are decent hard working people that have to put up with all their crap. I can't believe England let's these people rent in private feelings. The problem with the majority of hostels is that if a person is trying to be clean from drugs it is well nigh impossible. Same with many homeless shelters ( at least in the US) I have known people trying to get clean and wanted just to sofa surf on their own versus a homeless shelter where they could be offered drugs. Which they don’t have the strength to turn down.

When i was 6 i witnessed a homeless man getting beaten by 2 adult men! I'll never forget the sounds of them hitting and kicking him everytime knocking the wind out of him throwing his food at him and ignoring my cries and screaming to leave him alone i knew him well he was a popular figure and exmillionaire! I grew up and got my MMA license in 2001 and also kickboxing and taekwondo so everyone who sees a homeless person give them a break, cos if i witness that again im not a helpless 6 year old anymore and will feel what it's like to be beaten and humiliated! These people dont need or deserve to get knocked down anymore the system has failed them and will fail us all one way or another! I always make time to speak to them listen to them and give if i can! We are all just 1 mistake away from being homeless or as my friend says 1 wage packet away from homelessness

I watched part one and two. This is Focusing solely on the standards of accommodation! This isn’t just housing need!homelessness is multi layered with issues including drug and alcohol, mental health, and offending issues therefore the government hasn’t help by reducing funding on these services. And half the people who you spoke to on that documentary are housed in some form of accommodation. I hold my hat of to all hostel workers they are real frontline workers everyday is different with complex challenges to keep everyone safe .

One... you just quoted half of the things said in the documentary so it’s good you took something away from watching.... 2. You’re correct half the people spoke to were housed in temporary Accommodation and about half had been left behind and fell through the cracks of the system. The documentary focuses on whether these people will continue to receive help after the pandemic and whether those who refuse or simply don’t get help will be able to break the cycle. If you disagree with the way the doc was made I’d highly suggest you make your own documentary and I will look forward to watching. Cheers, TPM

@henryoliverferns

The fundamental issues leading to homelessness have never been addressed in society, abuse, neglect, poverty, poor education, alcoholism, drug addiction etc. Homelessness unfortunately is but a symptom of a much sicker society that is driven by consumerism and selfishness; the people left behind haven't been given the tools to deal with life by their parents or parent, this is a multi generational iceberg of a problem. The poor souls on the streets have been years/generations in the making and are but the tip of the iceberg of a much sicker society than politicians are willing to address and fail to ask the questions, who abused them and why? Why were they living in poverty? Why can't they make ends meet when working full time? Why are there so many alcoholics? Why are there so many drug addicts? Why do so many kids grow up with only one parent? Why are so many people so poorly educated? Why are there so many people who can't cope with life? The questions go on and on as to why we're in this mess. I don't have the answers, but I do know that the system is rotten to the core and has created the sick society that we live in and has no intention of fixing it. By the system, I mean, government, the military industrial complex, globalisation, big pharma, the mainstream media, the welfare state, consumerism and again the list goes on and on. The wonderful people at the coal face helping their fellow human beings to get a bed for night, have a hot meal etc are doing an amazing job but in reality are nothing more than a Band Aid on an axe wound that is getting ever deeper.

more than 10 years Ive done on streets on and off and 5 years in hostels it was the same faces in the hostels both times I've been in so they ain't helped many just keep them selves in the job. you have no rights they do make you feel like a child in hostels. You get a job and can't afford the hostel rent or go private. I was working 12hour shifts in a factory after I payed my rent I was left £20 and It cost 15notes to get to work there was no way I could feed my self on £5 or pay my child support Its only cost-effective on benefits. I got a flat after 3years of being in the system the last time and I was always a payday away from being homeless again. It cost the same for me to live in a flat as it did to live in a house with my Mrs and kids but only one income coming in. I managed to keep my head just above water for 6 year and at end of lockdown I was homeless again and swimming in debt. There was no way I was going back to a hostel I snapped my bank card didn't spend a penny for months lived from soup kitchens and supermarket skips so I could buy the cheapest boat I could find, it very small but it was the only way I could brake the cycle of homelessness a hostel won't for most people if you ended up in one with no drug or alcohol problems in most cases you will leave with one. I've been clean 20 years and had a lapse that was almost a relapse weeks before I got my flat so this time was not willing to risk it and went my own way. There is to many do-gooders that try but they don't see the bigger picture and never can with there narrow world view.

5/2/23 - I rarely respond to someone else reply; however your descriptive words got my attention: 1. Cost of living does not keep up with inflation 2. Hostels can be supportive and at the same time infestation 3. Narrow-minded people such as myself do not see the bigger implications Hope / peace / wish you welbeing~welfare living life

Post covid the number of homeless people must have shot up with many having lost jobs and unable to pay the rent and no family or friends to help them. I hope that families with young kids are prioritised as it must be so stressful for those parents and inevitably their children’s education will also be effected.

Why can’t the homeless be expected to follow the rules of a hostel offering them a free bed? What a backwards step we are taking in society by allowing such lawlessness. Many homeless are there by choice, because they don’t want to follow rules and work. They love the free meals, free clothing, free phones, free tents, free money, and all the sympathetic people who need to enable them in order to soothe their own guilt. You could enable better by inviting to live with you.

Hello from Oz.............What an excellent documentary and I have subscribed with the hope that you do a follow up sometime during 2022. As children, I bet they never thought that they would end up living on the streets. Each city, no matter where in the world should help the homeless with personal hygiene and it would not be hard to do. Have public shower blocks so they can clean their themselves coupled with clean clothes. It would do wonders for their self respect. God Bless all the homeless and keep them safe.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea !" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

Government: There just isn't the money and resources available to help or house the homeless in the UK. Also the Government: We will pay 20 million pound too the United States for a joint venture to help grass roots sport. Government: There just isn't the benefits available or properties for us to provide help and shelter to the UK homeless. Also the Government: We care about the migrants leaving their countries and seeking shelter in the UK, our doors are open to them and we will provide aid, housing and benefits. Now what i have written there isn't opinion... It is fact. The UK's government does this year after year.... And all it says to me is, huge sporting projects, government funded joint Ops that will earn back the UK profit, helping people OUTSIDE of the UK.... The government somehow manage to dig deep, find millions in pounds, millions in benefits and all the houses you could want for migrants. Yet When it comes to helping our own, our own hurt, homeless, ill....... There suddenly isn't a penny and housing is unavailable.
