I met Gerald sleeping on the steps of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. Gerald is a Vietnam veteran who uses his military training to survive, keep clean and protect others.
This is a very powerful interview. Gerald talks about NYC politics on homelessness and gives some insight into the challenges of trying to have good hygiene on the streets.
Please watch this interview. If it moves you, please leave a comment and forward to a friend.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I've been homeless many times. Due to moving to a new state and starting over but not planning on how long it would take to find a stable job. But I didn't give up,though I started from the bottom,I busted my butt working hard until I got an apartment and later on a house. Not saying it was easy but definitely possible.

@@yolamontalvan9502 "Blacks have to work four times harder" How when companies r forcing hire based on diversity quota and not qualification. Just because there r black people working more doesnt mean it does not apply on white people. Dont forget that US is white majority. So there would be more white rich people. Its like questioning why in middle east there r more rich arab people when there r like no rich black people. Next is black culture. It is well known that black people r teaching that whites r racist alongside with asians. That many r not doing their school properly. That youngsters r trying to be gangsta. If black people had asians culture they would be all over the places with good paying jobs. It is well known that jobs for poor people is more and more harder for everybody regardless of race, the very reason why you see black and other people on those posts doing too much of work.

My point being that while I agree that the only soldier I can truly consider as having served their country is the one that defends its own borders, I don't see why there should be quotation marks around the word when it comes to men who didn't volunteer. Those hippies were real scumbags. Calling these men baby killers for participating in a war they didn't ask for and were forced to go fight in.

Most Protestant churches don't have these because of their tiny size and also because most of them are operated by a single or a small group of believers while most Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Episcopal churches are more organised and are controlled by larger entities(diocese)

War leaves some vets disadvantaged to live in the present. So many of them live stuck in their minds where the memories haunt them. They can't take care of themselves. I'm veteran also and disabled. I was homeless in NY. It's tough! But survival skills is not exactly the way to live a happy life. I wish him well. He deserves happiness and opportunity. For his future, for himself and his family.

@@doorteppe6918 Maybe what he meant is that the government of the USA that actively discriminated black people, conscripted a black man against his will, made him fight a war he didn't have anything to do with, and left him to rot in the streets. Maybe the circumstances I which he ended were the consequence of the USA government intervention in this man's life against his will. Of course every man is responsible for his own fuck ups, but what if your government fucks you up?
@doorteppe6918
@doorteppe6918 4 жыл бұрын
Juani Castillo Very well stated. If that was the original complaint I would have responded much differently. You still can’t use a blanket term of “the government” much like the use of “America’s fault” they miss the nuance of these problems. When you say the government is actively discriminating there would have to be laws that prevent equality. Please point them out. I’ll even give you a couple, diversity hires and affirmative action. Those are discriminating but seen as justified in a twisted perception. Vietnam was Frances fault anyway. Every race was conscripted so that wasn’t discriminatory. It’s not the government that keeps you from getting a job, or moving somewhere else, unless you made mistakes that prevent you from certain jobs. Sex offenders, violent criminals, blue collar and white collar crime can and should make your life harder as a repercussion. Social welfare systems aren’t super effective and they aren’t completely ineffective. There are many better ways to solve these problems. Besides, the communities where racism is the worst and police are oppressive are these big cities which are strongholds for Democrats, that’s when government is oppressive and truly terrible. Like the super crazy restrictions and payments small businesses have to face which stops people from elevating into the upper echelon. Look at California to see how bad that is, so bad even big business has to flee.

We wont be able to survive without them currently, because we heavily, deliberately, depend of them for our livelihoods. Its a Master/dog, hand that feeds you system. Instead we have to slowly ween off them. Free shelter, free food, free energy, and free education👍. Invest in those, collaborate with others and share anything of worth that you know. We have to become self sustainable first, otherwise if we don't have the basic necessities, they will continue to oppress, manipulate, and control us as they have been forever.
