Homelite Weed Eater Won't Start

This Homelite weed eater would not start. After some troubleshooting I was able to get it to run, but now well. It will need a new carburetor. This video will show you the process I go through to tune up a weed eater.

Im at the end of my diagnosis. Has good spark, carb has been thoroughly flushed, taken apart and degreased, ignition module is still working per the spark, etc. the piston ring is worn. With the 2018 26cc model, there is no way to take the piston out. Ive had it completely stripped to just the block, and there is a small flat faced torque screw that locks the end of the piston to the crank rod. If you have this model, and have this issue, just save yourself time, and buy another one.

Thank you. I live alone and have an acre an a half. I'm in VA. I looked in the tank and could see dirt in the line. Cranked right up. My husband is in Heaven, so I utube everything. Thank you. I'm making him proud.

I bet you've done the same. I'm not a weak guy, but I've had to use those when the tank is pressurized and the cap is stuck.

I have a Homelite that appears identical to the one in this video. It had worked well under light use for the last couple of years, but this time...no luck. I tried draining the gas & put in fresh. I'm getting spark. It starts & idles for a while, but floods and dies when I give it gas - the same symptoms you experienced at the end of the video. I know your diagnosis was a new carburetor, but I was wondering if a carb adjustment would help. I saw you were trying to adjust the screw(s), but it would die before you could get to them. I figured giving that a shot couldn't hurt. How is the carb set? I've never done one. Thanks.

Hi Mark. With it idling turn the low end screw in slow until it starts running rough and then turn it out until the rpms pick up a little. That should have the low end set correctly. Then work on getting it to full throttle and adjust the high end in or out. To get the high end correct you really need a tach. Each engine manufacture has a rpm setting for the high end. Go past that and it will damage the engine. But more than likely we do not know what that rpm should be. Error on caution to have the rpm a little lower then what you find seems to be the max rpm. Hope this helps you out. If these adjustments do not help then I would replace the carburetor.

@@small_engine_repair Thanks for your sudden & thorough reply. While I have accumulated a decent assortment of tools, I can't recognize the tool used for the carb adjustment. Is it unique to these carbs or....???

I believe this one was a "Pac Man" style adjustment. If you search for Carburetor Adjustment Tool Kit you will find that there are bunch of different styles. I bought a kit off Amazon a while back for about $10.

I was running my weed whacker it just died I tried to pull it was frozen I soaked the piston on oil over night it came free no issues pulls easy plenty of compression but now it will not start. Any ideas what I didn’t do or need to do ?

If it froze up then you more than likely damaged the piston and rings.

I checked the piston looks okay or what would I look for to tell if it’s completely trashed ? it’s got spark it just will not start. The kill switch if I plugged it in backwards would that keep it from starting? Just a thought I don’t know.

My very similar homelite one here in Australia does the same as the last start you did & conks out if you try to throttle up and has done so since not long after new, but by the 30 sec to 1 min mark of it warming up on 1st idle it's ok to full throttle then. Quick Q too: when I'm working on the carburettor, do I need to do everything in reverse because I'm in the southern hemisphere !? (Like you know how the water in a toilet swirls in the opposite direction) (26/Jan/2024-1:48pm🇦🇺EST)(pls pin if you liked)

@@small_engine_repair mine didn't run properly until I started running it on pure synthetic 50:1 fuel mix. worked great for 3-4 seasons. now same issues in this video. it was $99 new. fixing stuff has it's place but I dunno if it's worth it for a home lite

I have the same exact weed eater, it seems to not want to start at all, brand new carb and fuel lines, spark is fine, played with the set screws on the carb and it started a few times but very inconsistent. And when I went to full throttle it it dies. Fuel is new as well. Any suggestions?

Possible damage to the rings, piston and cylinder. Remove the exhaust and inspect.
