How I Built a 3" mortar Cannon out of and old fire extinguisher.
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
I have been Engineering for 30+ years and Building Guns for 20+ years. The Inner core is very important, DO NOT attempt this unless you are competent and have a thorough understanding of explosive pressures and metal schedules etc. Building guns of any sort is very dangerousand not for the inexperienced. You have been warned!

You are quite right, But I was trying to stick to engineering terms rather than gunnery ones for the build video. I have a variety of Quadrants as I do 16th to 17th Century Gunnery demonstrations. Its aways nice to meet someone new with an interest in Historic Gunnery :) If you haven't already seen it, I have put up a video of a 6lb Saker cannon that you may be interested in :)

In a way, your recreation using modern materials is very much like a carronade in that the walls of the barrel are hollow.

@thepenultimateninja5797

@@mrmoosecreature No it's not. Carronades were constructed like any other cannon - solid cast iron walls. I can only assume the person above got confused with the *projectiles* fired from carronades, which were usually hollow.

Wonderful little cannon. I think if I were to build one I would use an old Oxy cylinder so the pressure wouldn't be too great on it. We used to make cannons out of pressure pipe. But we used 100% oxy acetylene mix for propellant. They were very powerful. But nice thing was they burned clean. LOL
@SwallowForge
@SwallowForge 8 жыл бұрын
+ Murray Lowe You can make quite a bang with a small chunk of calcium carbide and a few drops of water (producing acetylene gas). You probably know of the Big Bang company in the 1900's that sold cannons that worked on the same principle. Lots of fun :)
@murraylowe8677
@murraylowe8677 8 жыл бұрын
We just used a torch and set it to a neutral flame snuffed it out without turning off the valves then filling the breach through the vent hole. which after charged used the same vent hole to ignite the acetylene. I find it pretty difficult to get calcium carbide here.

Hey, I've still got my Big Bang Cannon that I bought at Cabba's Hobby Shop when I was a kid. I'll never forget the first time we fired it. I pressed the brass button to release the calcium carbide into the water, and we heard it bubbling, then we were scared that too much gas would build up and she'd blow. Finally my friend Noel jammed down the plunger and "Bang!" We used to shoot pecans out of the barrel. They didn't go to far, but it was a lot of fun. The company gave the calcium carbide the mysterious name of "bangsite" and we thought we could only order it from them.

Well I guess Fukin youtube took off the video on making the smoke grenades. I have watched several of your videos and am really impressed with your metal working skills. I have a cannon with a 2" bore. I have only shot it three times. It was impressive. The night I fired it the mosquitoes were about to carry us off. After the first shot with a film canister full of powder there were no more mosquitoes. I guess the concussion killed them. Could you give a verbal description on the making of the smoke grenades? We used to make smoke bombs with Potasium Nitrate and sugar. Six spoons of PN to 4 spoons of sugar. Heat in a pan over a low heat till the sugar melts and stir. Then pour out on aluminum foil until cooled. Light the corner and throw. This makes 3-4 little smokers.

Well spotted, Due to certain regs regarding the manufacture of firearms in my country, I err'd on the side of caution and left the actual constuction details out. The final breach was made with a chamber to replicate the original weapons.
