Fun fact: President Lyndon B Johnson had an amphibious car in his rnach in Texas. When he would take geust for a drive, he would speed down a hill into a lake and claim that the breaks had failed, and promptly drive the car into the water (it floated and puttered around) . It probably scared so many people lol

Noticed that as well. Both gears were the same so the prop was turning at the same speed as rear axle. It may be possible to use the same gears to drive a PTO shaft directly from the engine. Decouple the prop in a way similar to the VW Schwimmwagen and not only will ground clearance improve but it won't be a driveable blender any more. A win-win!

Next time you make this boat, try to make it 4wd so that getting in and out of the water isn’t as difficult. You can also have your gears for the propeller have a engage/disengage lever. And to help yourself go faster in the water you can adjust your gear ratios for the propeller so the prop spins faster.

Epic vehicle! Main problem I'm seeing though is the propeller is powered directly from the rear axle. This is a problem because you'd really want to be able to turn off the power to the wheels when you're in the water to save the power. The fact that it's a 1:1 ratio between the wheels and the propeller is probably a bigger problem - a propeller needs to go much faster, so that's probably why the boat "mode" was so slow.

Good job I have been thinking about building on as a dingy for my 37’ Morgan out island for sometime but the John boat is not stable enough in rough ocean waters. I’m dead serious about doing this. Good job I wish we could talk about this. When living on my sailboat I still have to go into town and that the perfect way. Don’t worry about battery power make a real one that can take ruff waters. It was nice to see what you built. Mine has to be tough unsinkable and light enough to pick up on my davets. Thanks for the video lol I started out with a John boat also but it tips over to easy.

A truckbed/boat that detaches from a small truck that functions as a boat maybe? It would slide out of the chassis and use a wench to pull it back in.

That's what I was thinking. My friend and I toyed with the idea of making this very thing, but at a time when we had no money. It's a bit different these days, he's an electrical engineer and I'm in IT. I think a good 12 ft flat bottom boat with a ~500cc motorcycle would be nice, but it may need to be a small car engine with an auto trans to really work as intended (manual shifting in a boat seems cumbersome and un-fun). Could probably pick up a Geo 3 cylinder eng/trans out of a junkyard pretty cheap. A Smartcar eng/trans would be ideal, but probably prohibitively expensive for a random fun project. Regardless, love the idea!

The more eagle-eared, nautically-inclined viewers may notice that the quiet background music during Peter's first explanation session and the montages is the same song used by Drachinifel over on his naval history channel as the intro to his Drydock Q&A sessions. That made me very happy.

Hey Peter, so no one is entirely sure why they are called, “Jon boats,” or, “johnboats”. There are many different beliefs: from the catchall term used around Philadelphia, “jawn,” being used to describe them; to these boats and the Scandinavian (where some think the style originate from) name, “Jon,” being so common that they got associated like any Jon could own one; to the idea they were made from Jack Pine trees in the Ozarks and that Jack boat got changed to Jon/John like a nickname. So, basically, they’re just Jon boats because they are lol. 🤷🏼‍♂️

what about putting some flaps on the wheels that will help it with thrust while you're driving the rear motor as well? they could be welded or bolted to the rim. that way the back motor is creating thrust and as the tires rotate they can also help propel it.

Pete, they just call it a 'Duck' or a Duckboat. I believe they are still being made in Wichita, Kansas by a company called 'Chance Rides'. Chance is a major manufacturer of carnival rides and have made steel roller coasters for amusement parks. One of their less fortunate products (created back in the '60s I think) was the Gasoline powered 'Pogo Stick'
