John and I testing how much force our respective long reach C clamps can exert.
Sorry - disabled new comments. This video attracted far too many of the same kind of stupid comments over and over. We were ribbing each other deliberately for the video, but people assume it was a lot of animosity (you can post comments, but I have to "review" them first, which I probably won't do)

Guys these video's are only meant to be fun. John and Matthias are both very comfortable with what they do. They both create awesome projects worthy of being built. Just sit back and enjoy. Also this is a learning experience. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained by comparing each other's projects. It doesn't really matter who has the better this or that. Step back and look at the bigger picture. Personally I thank John and Matthias for taking the time to do this. Just wait, for all the shit Matthias is giving John, John will be over at Matthias' soon enough. What comes around goes around. :D These are fun!

Mathias and John: you guys inspired me to build a similar c clamp out of 1 inch square steel tubing for doing the brakes on my pickup truck. I welded it all up but broke one of the welds after FINALLY getting one side of the truck's calipers squeezed down to replace the pads. It was a real job, So I got this brilliant idea to weld a 1/2 drive socket onto the end and re-weld it. That thing is a BEAST!!! Thank you for giving me the idea. Now I just connect my battery powered impact wrench and let it do all the hard work. It's awesome! Y'all are a blast to watch.

This test is not legit. Johns clamp with the wooden block under the lead screw performs a much wider "pressure point" than Matthias clamp, causing his to apply pressure to a greater partition of the maple board than Matthias. Johns clamps must therefore work against the Maple board wanting to bend in addition to the actual bending/downward force. The riser block should have been placed under the Maple board on the fixed part of the clamp. Engineering can be difficult. ;)

He does have a, very small, point. It didn't change the outcome but John's clamp had to apply slightly more force for the same deflection due to the width of the riser. I was surprised you didn't just put one clamp on each side of a seesaw arrangement and let them work against each other.

In my opinion, without calculating anything out, I'd say that the effect from Matthias being a little closer to a point load and the other guy being closer to a distributed load was negligible in this case. The difference wasn't that big. Had that spacer been 4+ inches long, sure.

No-one is forcing anybody watch them, and as a pretty basic wood-butcher (sic) who is pleased to learn from someone who knows I find them educational with the occasional bit of gentle fun chucked in.
