My heart goes out to you. In the past I spent ten years selectively breeding the perfect hatching hen. I had to move house so I only kept five of my best hens each with a clutch of chicks. Mink wiped out the lot. I've never forgiven them

@@vinniesdayoff3968 I'm sorry to hear that Vinnie, I feel your pain. These were also my breeding stock, the hen were brody and unfortunately they got it. Never had issues with mink in my area, it was always the foxes I had to worry about. Thank you very much for your instructions in the video, it is much appreciated.

@@civrn368 A couple of mk6 Fenn traps would be useful too Ter. You can set them in a wooden box made to size. There are lots of instruction videos online. If you are in the UK check your laws because I think you guys had some changes to the law in the last few years

What you need is a good quality stretchy bungee Gary. It does not need to be that strong at all, but it must be stretchy and maintain its ability to stretch.Having the trigger rod round and smooth at the end will help sensitivity too. Not many pack rats up my way!

Thanks very much for your comment. . I forgot to mention that they are cheap , the mesh costs maybe two euro. I have only ever lost one mink that reached the bungee and bit through it. You can stop this by placing a flat stone under the bungee where it is tied to the mesh.Hope it works well for you

I have watched and enjoyed many of your videos Joseph. It is based on commercial traps, but I arrived at this design by trial and error and by adapting the materials I had available.

Oh yea, if a rat can get his head through a hole he can get his body through as well. Smaller mesh is required for rats. About half that size should do it. 1/2" or whatever that is in mm's.

I hope it goes well for you. I have a video where I dug a trap into the bank of a stream but it is just as effective to cover the trap with grass and leaves to make a tunnel. They are cheap. I only ever lost one mink that managed to chew the bungee. A spring would stop that, I just put a flat stone between the cage and bungee

Yeah, I live on a lake next to 2 feeder streams, backed up to miles of wooded land. I think I can use these and scale them up and down for all sorts of creatures. I do very much like the locking mechanism you came up with. That seems to be a major problem for traps. That and a weak door. Thanks for sharing you design. Ill report my luck when I have some!

The trigger rod should be smooth with no burrs. I leave it holding the door with as little as possible gripping the door, if you follow my logic. this way a light weight is all it takes to set off the trap. Is that what you needed to know David?

Thanks Christy, I would put it behind the threadle, and maybe put stones or slates or something at the back and sides to stop critters reaching in. Make sure it is not directly under the threadle which might prevent the trap from going off. You can vary the length or size of the trap to suit, it is not set in stone. For mink you don't really need bait, just make a tunnel with the trap either by digging it in or more easily, covering it with grass and rushes or whatever, and have it beside a small stream.You certainly can put some fish or meat or even feathers in if you want. For safety you could put a flat stone between the trap and the bungee where it attaches to the rear of the trap as I once lost a mink that managed to bite through the bungee. A steel spring might be better if you can get them. Hope that helps bud.

See how I left the ridges of wire running from left to right at 1.59 minutes. The flange or bent piece of the door (5.34) will grip or lock behind that ridge of wire. Does that help?

Hi Martin. I get the mesh from a local hardware that has always carried it. I'm not sure of the gauge. The mesh differs in hardness and stiffness. You need to be able to bend it but avoid the soft stuff. I'll measure it tomorrow (I'm not at home at the moment ) and tell you the thickness

Thanks Tnern. you could use fish oil or if the weather is not hot any fish meat or even feathers. It is important to cover the trap so it looks like a tunnel. Mink are very curious and will examine any tunnel or hole they find even without bait. I place dry grass in the trap. when you catch a mink they release a strong scent then proceed to make a bed with the grass. I think this grass is the best bait you can get.

It is 1.53mm exactly Tam. You are bang on about some weld mesh being too light. It also varies in hardness. I think I said in the comments to get strong and hard weldmesh if possible

I’m up in Sligo. It’s very hard to get anything for trapping and snaring up here. The hardware shops only seem to stock the lighter mesh or the gauge is too big. The lighter stuff distorts as soon as you add the springs. I was looking for the heavier stuff for some Larsen, rabbit and mink cages. Cheaper to make when you need a few of them than to buy out the shop plus not everywhere you can use a 116 body grip or legal snares for pest control. That’s a handy wee trap you built.

@@tamm1796 If you are ever in Tipperary Town go to Blackburn's hardware shop.They have a range of mesh usually. It isn't the hard steel that you would have to cut with a grinder it is still fairly easy to bend

Never had one go through the wire. You are wondering if mr Brocc will get through it.The only mink I ever lost managed to grab the bungee and bite through it. I get around this by placing a stone between the trap body and the bungee where it attaches to the trap. This was also before I came up with the locking door. It is important not to have soil or debris that can stop the door locking. I think I mentioned in the description to get the strongest and "steeliest" weld mesh you can. My supplier has different types and some are harder than others. I did have a fox rip one open to get at a rat that was caught in the trap. I was surprised at the job he did on it. You can obviously make the trap bigger if that suits you. I often vary the sizes

Just more easily available. You do need a good quality bungee to remain springy, and you need to tighten it now and then.

With regard to your question about plastic vs metal, if rodents are the target I believe it would not matter. Mice will get everywhere and into everything. I had a commercial live mouse trap made from plastic and I did not like it because a great deal of condensation built up if you caught a mouse. They ended up looking drenched, and I did not regard it as humane

It is indeed 1"x1" Mesh.. The sheet metal is about 1.5 mm thick. Around 16 gauge I think..

Thicker sheet metal would be better as long as you could still bend and work it. Not sure about the gauge wire. I just pick out the best I can get. Hope that helps you. Good hunting!

Is galvanised sheet metal different to using baking tins etc. The local pounds stores do baking trays for a pound a time but I don't think this galvanised sheet metal. Might I ask where you source your metal from?

Aluminum should work also for the trigger and the door. Many baking trays, cake pans are aluminum. cookie sheets, are mostly steel. take a small magnet with you so you can tell steel from aluminum, I would think most should work because of the way he has created the door seal. You don't want the animal to be able to bend it,. Galvanized steel will last longer than just plain steel. You can paint steel (I paint small steel objects, turn on the oven to 180f, turn off oven and leave item in overnight, paint good and cured). if you cannot get galvanized (check a local heating/Air conditioning shop for scraps or a metal recycler).

I'm not sure what gauge. I measured it for someone recently and it is 1.7mm thick. Just from googling (convert mm to gauge) it is about 14 gauge or so

@@litahsr.8226 The traps I have shown are what I learned about as a kid or with the mink trap, something I had worked out how to build because I couldn't afford to buy them in "the good old days". Other than these I use Fenn traps and some body grip traps but there are already many good videos about them on KZfaq. Thankfully I don't have any problem with mice :-)

I have never seen a mongoose in real life. I have caught cats in that trap so I presume a mongoose is not bigger than a cat so it should work. You could make the trap a bit bigger to suit your needs
