homemade Wood Splitter I put together from an excavator cylinder,ride on mower,and 6.5 hp pressure washer engine.I think it must be around 18 ton force.has a pump that does 11 gallons a minute.The engine should be a 8hp for this pump,but it works fine.

A little friendly reminder. Never put hands/fingers on end of log. Almost pinched your finger between the stop plate and the log at 2:12. If you get in the habit of only lifting wood by the middle you can never get hurt. Nice build on the splitter. It's obvious you are a hard worker.

Nice little splitter, you might want to reinforce that endplate that the cylinder pushes against though, maybe with some 1"x3" scraps, saw it flexing pretty good. Nice quick cycle time, makes quick work of lots of wood

Nice machine, powerful, short cycle. Yes I wood shore up the stopper plate, I saw it flex too. I bought a gas fired splitter from Northern Tools 18 years ago. Paid $1,100.00 for it. I used it to split my 5 cord a year. Then I thought.... Y not rent it out, get my money back, and have the machine sitting in my yard 4 FREE! And that's what I did. People kept calling me every year. Moving to Florida. Sold splitter to neighbor for $600.00. Still runs beautiful! I made $2,000.00 profit, and sold it.

Your right,I fought a knotted piece of wood on it as a challenge and it bent the backstop which is an inch thick.It will get heated up and pulled back with the splitter ram one day and a re-inforcing plate on end behind it.

i built mine almost like yours, i like the traveling wedge better than stationary, you need a table on both sides especially with the diameter you are splitting i just built a drop on 4 way wedge works fine & saves time i split mostly live oak and pecan and that stuff is pretty tough especially pecan, nice machine and with a little tuning you will enjoy it even more

Very nice. Watch those fingers! I split a bunch of firewood with a similar splitter and I'm always imagining how it would suck to smash my hand or fingers in there. I have the "Moving ram, stationary wedge" design though. Yours is quite fast with that small cylinder. Mine has a 5" cylinder and it's way slow. Will go through just about anything though. My next splitter will me a high-horsepower, big pump unit for speed. Yours rocks! (I have a Wood-Mizer band mill. Love it!)

Yours is a lot like the one I have. I had to do a LOT of doodling with it before I figured the cylinder packing was gone. Repacked it and it took off. Mine has a 2-stage pump and I backed off the pump so it goes into low quicker. I've got an old L-head 5 horse Briggs that I run about 1/3 open. It's pretty much a 14 ton rig. I have a gauge on it and the bypass is set around 22 to 2400 p.s.i because that's what the cylinder and valve are rated. I got it swapped likie you did to keep from having to run nthe insplit chunk down every time. All my wood is hardwood except a little poplar but it's seasoned out like a rock. Oak, maple and hicory mostly. No pine here! Inside flue and need no tar buildup. Beautiful place. Keep on splitting and stacking.

That does not appear to be a two stage pump at all. That's why you have to jiggle the valve handle, to keep from stalling the motor. I owned a splitte r with a single stage pump for about a year and cussed it the whole time.

nice job but a little small 1 piece to add a table to catch split wood and being it back to you attached to wedge with a fix table just off the outside of moving table so bigger split pieces can be stacked on it easily and finished split piece can be grab and throw in trailer --using 2 hands and belly will get old fast-- built my 6 ton splitter 1979 bought wood stove and chainsaw same time- on 4th chainsaw now replaced heater last year and rebuild/new splitter this year same steel being used 34 ton now I can not believe the difference-- time is less than 1/2 of what it was- splitting red,white,pin and water oak any oak except live oak ( still a secret for live oak splitting) southern oak seems to be a lot different than northern oak most of southern oak not easily split with maul and wedge lots and lots of work for small amount -- can split from 24 to 36 in wood any diameter if needed tractor boom can load round piece for me or just cut in 1/2 since just me

I think you have narrated some of the west coast logging trucks and old equipment? Is it an optical illusion is the back plate bending? I am going to build a splitter with the wedge on the live end and work it from the end so not to have to lean so far forward. I should get back to the paperwork part of the design. That is quit the pile of wood you have there!

skadill I dont think so, the motor seems to handle the pump, but your ram/splitting head cant handle the acceleration - you shouldn't have to feather the valve like that. you need a bigger diameter ram or lower GPM pump, it will work far better.

@reforgedcriterion1471
@reforgedcriterion1471 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah no.. this guy is proof that most comments are from uneducated trolls. The only reason you should ever go up in size on a hydraulic cylinder is if you're unable to push through wood at full pull. If the motor dies it's a motor or valve issue. Setting the psi too high will cause the motor to stall or it could lead to hoses exploding. If you ever get into a situation where a pinhole leak gets under your skin or a blown hose opens up a wound get to a hospital asap as it will turn your flesh necrotic. Anyway, it's nice to see someone on here who has opted for a fast splitter rather than wasting their time.
