This is a really useful video especially the bit about it being morrisons home brand matured potatoes .I have tried to buy it before but was warned it must not contain added salt and chemicals . I have been using chocolate ready break on its own for v the last few months , it works but is not perfect. the water separated from the goo and runs out sometime s .I need some new pots with the ready made lids as well . My six month old ones with the sponge filter still work after a wash but they won't last forever 😂

Ah! I used to use those sachets as well, they do work but not quite as good as they should. Not a great fan of those sponge top ones because they get pupae on them and it flicks off when you pull the sponge out, and they're also a pain for getting the flies out when you're down to the last few.

Cool, nice video, nice hints. I sometimes prepare D.hydei cultures too, but I used pre mixed stuff I once bought in a shop. But making it by your own is great and cheaper. Do you know if this works for Terflies too, Drosophila melanogaster? When I buy these (the non-flying flies) the medium seems to be another and more stinky than the D.hydei one. Also I heard that the flies have enough yeast on them so you dont really need yeast starter. Anyway, great video :)

You can do with or without yeast but as I have lots of it I use it lol! It works better for melonagaster but I have no idea if it works for terflies but it would be great to find out. The cinnamon stops it stinking and also helps prevent mould.

Oh, that was just natural raffia from an art supplier as there was no excelsior available. I've even used shredded paper in the past but it always needs topping up as the humidity makes it go wonky lol

If you ever start a cooking channel i would actually watch that, and i normally hate them. Might even start cooking. You almost got me started making fruitfly goo for no reason, I don’t even have fruit flies..

It is a bit of an off the wall question, but I have a load of fruit flies that I think appeared uninvited from some shop bananas that have now settled into the worm bin i have kept in my kitchen over the winter - being in York, UK it is still a bit too cold to put them back outside (the worms that is) but I made the mistake of keeping some strawberry stalks under a punnet for a few days and attracted a load of fruit flies and they seems more prone to being crushed with my fingers and not flying away. Anyhoo, I offered the deceased flies to the fish in my aquarium and they seems to be a very popular snack. So, if I begin breeding fruit flies for my fish occasionally, and i attract the wild flying versions via a funnel to some fruit stalks, how do i snuff out a batch of them so i can feed them to my aquarium fish please? I assume it must be CO2 but unsure whether a home-brew of 2 chemicals might do it. So, can anyone suggest a simple non-poisonous extermination/incapacitating method I can use on my wild winged fruit flies as a food source for my fish please. Or do i just buy non-winged varies and feed them live to my fish occasionally? Many thanks in advance from another part of Yorkshire where of course the Best Value always costs £0 and 0p lol.

The freezer, mate. That's the simple answer to your question. If you can get them into a container and put it in the freezer for 10 minutes they will die. After 1 or 2 minutes they will first lose their ability to fly until they can warm up their muscles again. Flightless fruit flies cost about £3-5 depending on where you live for a culture that should last a good month so if your endeavour fails it wouldn't be that expensive to keep a culture going indefinitely after a single purchase.
