When my Moluccan grandparents' generation was brought to The Netherlands they started making their traditional instruments with tin tuna cans too. The instrument is called a Totobuang and is very similar to the Gamelan.

Is there a reason why each string has its own resonator, or can i use one big can for several strings?

ha ben oui je me souviens de l'avoir vu cette vidéo. pour le kalimba, je cherche encore des pièces d'inox ou d'acier trempé correcte pour en faire un sympa. Je trouve souvent des pièces trop épaisse pour que ça sonne bien.

Howdy, Nicolas! Great stuff on this channel -- congrats! A couple questions for you or anyone else, while I wait for tuning pegs to arrive by tugboat from China: What can be said about the relationship between the size of the string and the size of the cans? My instinct tells me that larger cans will be better for lower notes with less pressure (because a larger diaphragm will be more sensitive), and for higher and tighter notes with more pressure on the can one can get away with a smaller diaphragm. Has anyone found this to be true? Also, what has been your experience getting this mic'd up properly? There are lots of separate resonators pointed in two different directions! I'm thinking of using an outer resonator to catch what the cans are throwing out, such as a barrel grill, trash can, or oil drum -- and then put a condenser mic inside that, one for each side. But will I also need one piezo for each can? Have you tried tying the cans together with a metal strip and then placing a piezo on that? I will be able to experiment with all this in about a month when everything is assembled and will report back. Cheers!

@@nene_blimboblambo Yeah, I would say the wider the can the better the sound, particularly with the lighter strings. I had a hard time getting wound strings to sound good and focused on ~20 gauge or less, but the frame seen here makes testing different configurations relatively easy. I built another frame with multiple strings sharing larger paint cans which turned out impossible to tune, so now have a prototype that uses a bridge. As far as mics, it's challenging because it throws a wide pattern in 2 directions, but a couple condensers will do a fair job. Have fun, it's a very unique sound!
