Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit kzfaq.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

I started making my own Senkos simply because I was getting annoyed spending close to $10/bag for store bought. About $100 for an injector and the Do-It cast senko mold, plus a $10 craigslist microwave and it gave me the ability to just recycle my old shredded baits instead of tossing them. Pretty quickly paid for itself there in less than a season of fishing. I don't find any downsides to my home maid baits - they catch fish just as well, and a cool perk of shooting recycled baits is that I ended up with a dark brownish green color with a rainbow mix of flake that has been very effective for me and is different than what everyone else is throwing. Now, I still have plastisol and colorant and all that - but it still comes out cheaper per bait even when I'm mixing my own and not recycling old baits, and I can fine tune the density and softness to whatever I prefer. Bait gets a little torn up? Screw it, just toss it in my bag for recycling and grab a fresh one instead of feeling compelled to fish it until it's falling off the hook.

A couple thousand…..lol…..that’s a good start. I already see dozens of molds I want(don’t need) but would make a great addition to what I recently started. It’s all your fault Chris! You made it look so easy (and it is super easy). I don’t regret spending the money a bit….it’s fun…relaxing….it’s gratifying…and my daughter(14) loves it as much as I do! Fun for the whole family! Great video again Chris! Keep inspiring others the way you have me bro!

I started a few years ago as a way to recycle the big bucket of used baits we would end up with after a season. What keeps me going is the ability to make custom colours and baits that I just can't get in store locally. I will often make custom baits speifically for a trip. And hey, those days I can't get out fishing due to weather, I think making baits is the next most enjoyable thing! I dont't care that the hobby costs a small fortune. It's worth every penny! With what I learned from this channel, my baits look better now than ever.

I happened across one of your early videos a couple months ago and it sparked a great interest. I have sat and binge watched a ton of them now lol. I have recently gotten about a dozen different hand pour molds and a 5 gallon bucket of dead on plastix... I plan on selling baits with a business I already have. I make sinkers, I make spinnerbaits, and now I can add softbaits to the lineup. These are all just side sales for me, as my current biz is renting out canoes and kayaks, but I definitely see the ability to make a great return off of a fun hobby. Thanks for all the vids, and tips, and knowledge that you share... it truly is invaluable.

Good stuff as always. And in the end, there is no wrong answer. If you love to make baits, you’ll find a purpose to what you’re doing, whether it’s designing your own favorites, supplying your buddies with requests, or selling to the general public. To be sure, it’s a pricey hobby, but then, fishing isn’t cheap in itself, especially if you’re using a boat/yak. But then again, shooting videos for KZfaq, rebuilding your favorite car, woodworking, any hobby really will have a level of expense that will consume as much of your budget as you decide to invest. All I know is that every time I see your baits, I know it’s time to get out to the shed and do some more pouring. 😎

Great Video Chris. The reason I started making my own was because it Didn’t matter what Retail Store you went into it’s was all the Same Stuff! All the same colors,Sizes, and baits. The home bait maker have many more options to produce way more colors and designs of baits just makes it all worth it and the average angler likes that option better in my experience

Great video Chris! I am teetering on the fence, but I think I am loosing my balance toward starting. Your videos have helped put costs vs benefit into prospective. I just had an idea. Maybe you could try to laminate 2 different stiffnesses of plastics to create a stiffer spine or something along those lines. Not sure if there is much benefit to doing it but would be neat to see if it affects the action of a bait.

We've noticed the same thing with our small garage bait business. The market seems to be as big as we want it to be, every time we make another push to grow, it does. I don't think there's any shortage of people looking to try out new baits and supporting local in our market is a huge thing so people in our province make up about 80% of our business. As for the simple high volume and quick vs. the higher quality and slower for more money - we found that starting simple on each type of product for a season or two worked to build a base and then we moved into the higher quality stuff once our sales allowed us to buy higher quality gear. Customers didn't seem to mind the changes and were happy to pay a bit more for something higher quality that was local and looked better than standard store bought lures. Thanks for all the tips along the way, we started out as a custom tungsten jig company and now we're moving into the soft plastic world and people are loving them. No one on KZfaq better to learn from than yourself!

Open pour molds are a perfect way to start. I just got my first mold a few days ago and I'm pumping out some awesome 4" swim baits, there are company's that sell plastics in cubes to make things even easier to start, this is what I'm doing currently, and trust me when I say your not limited in color options using pre made colors instead of mixing your own, there's so much you can do or make with just one good mold, I have 7 different molds coming in the mail now and couldn't be more exited, all of which are open pour, in the future I will get into injecting but for now I'm having fun pouring!

i can say from my experience, and perhaps its different than most, i wound up saving a good bit of money in the long run casting my own plastics. now i will say, i went into it with the intentions of saving money. How i managed this was to simply save up all my torn up, used baits for the better part of a year (also had a fishing buddy saving his for me). Granted this is a bit more of a headache to clean and sort old plastic. It also sometimes produces imperfections with the baits. I know from experience though, bass are a lot less picky than we tend to think and will 100% eat an imperfect bait. amazon has more than a couple cheap faux-stone molds and cheap injectors, and i just started with what i already knew worked in my waters.

Hi chris. First, great videos. Keep up the great work. Definitely make your own baits. I have been doing this for about 10 years. I fish a lot of tournaments out west. You can use the different plastics and get different actions out of your baits that store bought baits dont have. Plus you can make COLORS that stores does not carry. Thats why i started mine. Yeah its expensive but you can make any color and either soft or harder baits and scents. Thank you for all your info and enjoy your beer. Take care.

I got started making bait, because the baits I was buying were $8 a pack. The baits I was buying were 🔥 and caught plenty of fish, but they wouldn't last too long. Was buying 20 packs at a time. That adds up quickly. Glad to find your KZfaq channel and learned lots. I don't make lots of baits, because it's very time consuming. Spent a few bucks with great molds, DOP plastisol, Lureworks colorant and flakes. It was well worth it. I started with 1 gal size containers. Not anymore, 5 gal is the way to go. Best advice I can share is wait for sales from mold manufacturers and plastisol companies. Anywhere from 10-25% can be saved from waiting.

Found your channel about two years ago. It was right after I had picked up a cheap single mold and injector. Shortly after, I saw your first iteration of this video. Earlier today I made the 500 investment you recommended. I went with two gallons of dead on plastic. One floating and one sinking. I also picked up some of their chameleon powder. Next I jumped over to spike it and picked up a pint of green pumpkin and black. I also picked up various colors in the 4 and 2 ounce sizes. Next was AI Angling where I picked up their 3 cavity creature bait mold based on SK structure bug. I also picked up a soft jerk bait mold. Later I’ll upgrade my injectors with bass tackle. Just thought it was funny you made reference to that original video on the same day I made my order. Thanks for the inspiration!

I've done a lot of searching of fishing videos here and I've only heard one guy in one video even mention a custom bait from a small independent bait maker. I had no idea it was possible til I saw that video a week or so ago. A lot of people I think buy store baits cuz they wanna use the same baits the pros use kinda like how people follow celebrity fashion. People do also like to buy baits because they are rare and special. Supporting small business is a thing too. I think you could look at your business from a perspective that you actually sell an opportunity for someone to help a small business and enjoy the emotional high they get from "doing a good thing". As a perk they get a great bait as well which gives you an edge over the store brands.

Chris I love your honesty. I'm in over $1k in molds, vacuum chamber, pump, microwave, and I'm just getting started. Nothing beats catching fish on the swimbaits I pour, it's thrilling and very rewarding. Being a really bad tackle junkie in the past making my own baits has already saved me a ton of money. Sure it's tough buying multiples of the same mold but that's what is necessary especially in open pour if one wants to increase production. For the money and quality I thinking Ai has the best to offer.

I have been lead pouring since 1982. Same pot, molds and accessories. You cannot imagine how many spinnerbaits and jigs I have poured with very little investment. I recently started pouring ned jigs. I do something unique and could not find a jig that worked for me. I modified a mold. I went through approx. 250 jigs last year alone @ .37 ea. instead of the closest commercial jig at $1.67. Plastic pouring will start next year. I just don't have the time to commit to it right now. The main reason for me is I can't find the baits I like in the colors I prefer. I started off with about a $2000 investment around 2003 or 2004. Color by the liter, glitter by the pound, plastic by the bucket. 3 sizes of stick baits and 2 sizes of single tail grubs ( del-mart molds ) lol. Still have alot of that stuff.. I got into pouring heavy again when a favourite lure company shut down shortly after I discovered them and I made my own silicone molds of their baits... I now own just about every mold Angling a.i. makes... I have never sold more than the odd pack of baits but am thinking about it a little more these days... Discontinuation of favourite baits and availability is what drives me most. Some baits are just plain hard to get here in Canada and once stocks are gone - thats it for the year. I used to put hundreds of miles on looking to buy up a pack of baits here or there to finish out the season as I didnt have the week or more to wait for them in the mail... No more :) . P.S. Both my rocket bait and ecto craw molds each paid for themselves about 10 fold in tournament winnings last year and Im still just getting started with A.I. molds. The hobby has been very rewarding for me that way over the years... If you do it right you can still make baits for well under retail after an initial investment ( at least in my area). Take care.

Chris , i find this to be little meaning 12% hilarious , because last summer i proved that home made baits work better then the store bought baits , because i kept on catching channel catfish on home made coke soaked hot dogs and bite size sausages , told friend of mine and she told dude you just proved that the home made baits work better then the store bought baits. so evidently catfish prefer home made baits then the baits you purchase at the store.

A friend I taught to make plastic worms found a type of ring worm was killer on walleyes in Canada. The group he fishes with use to spend $1500 dollars on expensive live bait in Canada. The group put together money to buy a double injector, 5 gallons of plastic. 3 bottles of colorant one multi cavity mold. Used microwave oven for $8 dollars. They get together and make lures. They have years worth of lures to fish with under $500 . Their Canada trips now are even more productive then ever. They also have a blast getting together to make the lures. The doel injector can be taken apart to make two single injectors.

Cris I live in the middle of nowhere so making baits helps to keep fishing. I'm new to it so I'm keeping it simple and can't wait until spring to try some of my baits out. What I really need is a robo worm mold in 4.5 inch! Do you know we're I can get one? I have to mail order all of the worms so I would like to hand poor some. Thanks from MT.

Random question have you ever tried running a twin injection laminate as a core shot? Would that be possible? I think a nice translucent smoke shell with bright cherry and chartreuse core and resulting two tone tails would look great. I'd love to see what you could come up with.

As a hobby? This craft is amazing and the nice thing is you can spread out your purchases. Its not one of those things where you have to spend a thousand bucks just to get started. Some plastic, some color, some cups and some open pours and you can get started pretty cheaply then add more as you go. I never really used soft plastics to fish with, for me this was a hobby so I could have something to do while at home, thought id sell a few just for kicks and giggles, give the rest away to family/friends. My dad and I are a big fan of the Roadrunner marabou jigs, 1/4 oz with the small blade spinner. red heads, white body. Or the green ones, solid whites, always did good but they are getting to be hard to find locally and getting very expensive. They run 2 dollar 69 cents for 1 at bass pro right now. I now have molds to make my own soft plastic baits to use in place of those now and I can inject those 6 at a time in one and 4 in the other and at 2.69 a piece.. it doesn't take long before that cost more than just making something I like at home. (Angling AI phantom grub and the 5in single tail grub, perfect size to target what we use them to fish for) Now I have a bunch and it doesn't matter if we loose any.. it used to always be pain in your very soul to loose one of those road runners cause a pack of them may of run you 20-30 bucks for 10 jigs. Sure I spent a lot more than that getting all the stuff I have now but its never been about the cost. Now I have an endless supply of stuff I can use in the colors I want to use. I will say that one downside to soft plastics is the cost of buying hooks. Some can be bought in large quantity for an acceptable price.. some are outrageous.. like the swimbait hooks for the bigger swimbaits. They have a range of prices as well but you can easily spend 10 bucks for just 3 hooks. This may be inconsequential to most people but as someone who didn't really ever use much soft plastics before.. Im used to buying stuff like the marabou jigs thats all in one, or spinners which unless you loose the skirt off one its just a tie and go, or live bait and thats usually just buying a big box of hooks and your set. Ive spent 862 dollars just on molds from Angling Ai at this point, ive got one from fat guys, ive got 2 single injectors and a dual injector that I dont ever take apart because I have the singles (so 4 injectors total, 4 or 5 gallons of plastic sitting around, ive bought remelt from people just to have it to play with, a wall of colors and stacks of glitter, a vacuum chamber, eyes, bags, gloves, stirring utensils, spoons, cups, microwave. We've gotta be getting close to 2k$ expenditure by now and Theres a few more molds I want from Angling Ai, theres some molds I want from Wu Molds.. DOP has come out with some colors and stuff I dont have yet.. and Ill keep buying! Sure as heck isn't worth it in terms of cost of making or buying from the store but its so much more fun. And at the end of the day.. and every time you catch a fish... you get to say... I made that. Thats worth all the cost in my book

I personally feel it is a satisfying process to create something yourself, and fish with it. Not only is it a huge stress relief for me, it gives me a purpose for all those torn plastics hshs

I don’t do plastics I pore jigs, Spinnerbaits, bladed jigs and buzz baits. Most are custom or modified molds so much of what I make is unique. So when your favorite bait only exist because you make it there really isn’t another option

I personally think it is tougher if you live in a place with not much water like where I live in Kansas but I can definitely see it being a lot easier customer base wise if you live in a place with a lot of water unless you want to sell like over Etsy or something like that.

I pore/tie jigs, buzz baits, Spinnerbaits, bladed jigs. Some of my molds are 40 years old and some are custom. So some of the things I make and fish don’t exist on the market. Jack Hammers are $15 so there is that. Sell about enough to pay for what I use.

For $800 I was able to get the molds, plastics, glitter, powders and pigments i need to supply my own. I don't have enough duplicate molds to make it feasible for starting a business but I can definitely supply my own baits. I don't buy many things out of stores anymore. Becoming a business isn't always the goal but having my favorite baits in my favorite colors at all times is great especially since the great tackle shortage of 2021. Tackle and toilet paper were priceless during this time.

Excellent video. Great insights into getting into the hobby. It dove-tails perfectly with a live "custom Bait" box opening discussion from last night. Most in the room thot the plastic baits were not custom and outrageously priced. I tried to defend the small baitmaker that his colors were indeed custom because he had to mix them. Yes, the mold he used was a knock-off of other popular big bait maker. But aren't nearly all molds knock-offs unless you have your own CNC machine. Topic 2: How many milliters are your dual injectors each?

I personally think the high quality c and c molds create more detailed plastics on average and with dialing in high quality plastisol you can achieve a way better action in the lure. Comparing the ai open pour fluke to a zoom fluke is mind-blowing, I don't care for store bought plastics.

Great video! I'm not so good in English, but could you please repeat or answer is it your main business now and does it bring you enough income to do only this? Can you give small advice - it is better to buy aluminum stuff at start at once or it's better to try with fluoroplastic injector and artificial acrylic stone molds? How much lures you are selling per month? Thanks in advance

I am EASILY $3k+ into it, bits and pieces here and there over years. I have a stand alone cupboard full and I mean full (I need a second) of molds, colors, glitters, and tools. Have I broke even? Oh hell no! Will I? Maybe some day. My friends and myself have "free" plastics for life. I will get an urge and pump out a couple hundred baits here and there, bag them up and wait until a farmers market day. I set up a table and sell over flow just for fun. Over the last 2 years I may have recouped half of what I have spent but doing it for fun and saving my circle money I bet I have doubled or more the value if not the dollars I have spent.
