For those asking for the plans, BOM, etc, I merged all files in a 7-Zip file so you can download it.
It's included:
- the complete 3D model (in Solidworks format, main file is CNC.SLDASM)
- the 2D drawings used to machine the parts (if it doesn't have a 2D drawing, it's a laser cut part, so there's only the 2D DXF file used by the laser mahines)
- some pictures from the assembly
- a powerpoint presentation about the project
Note that all material is in portuguese. It shouldn't be a big deal, since you can check all data and dimensions on the 3d model.
It was a graduation project, so if you have interest send a message and I'll send you the paper explaining the design choices, calculations, etc. But it's in portuguese as well.
A few notes that I remenber:
- A couple of hole were modeled with the wrong diameter, but I don't remember which ones anymore.
- I wouldn't use countersink bolts if I had to rebuild this machine. It gave me a lot of trouble when aligning the linear slides.
If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

@keesijp49 Maybe for industrial scale these may become a problem, but for home PCB making, I havent experienced any of these problems... backlash can be compensated a little bit in the code. I used common ball bearings, they are not high precision ones. The linear round guides are SAE 52100, h6 precision. I've been able to make tracks as thin as 0,20mm.

It was not bought on a shelf, and except commercial components (drill, motors, bearings, etc) all parts were designed and fabricated by me, so yes, for me it's a homemade cnc

Of course you can, the same way you can build a car with wood and a horse as the motor. It will do the job of transporting people, but there are a lot of other points to consider. I won't be long since you didn't participate of the conception, so you don't know what the were requirements like sturdiness, speed, minimum machined track, etc

No, that is ignorant. PCB machines are by far the best for home as the use of chemicals is not needed at all. It is fast in terms all you have to do is design the PCB which you have to do anyway and put the copper clad into the machine. The process with chemicals is best for mass production and in factories where chemicals are easier to have and use since a machine can breath in fumes. A cnc drilling machine is actually the best way to home PCB making. One cnc machine is with thousands of ckts.

+Paul B I built mine for about 200 euros. Some of the parts I used are overkill. With good planning you can make a good one for 150. Expect 4-5 months build time cause you're ordering that shit from China! Cheers!
@paulb1953

+mendebil cool mate- so what are the pitfalls? 150-200 is in my budget range. ill mostly be engraving pcbs and aluminium/ acrylic panels. if i can save cash ill order it from mars .
@mendebil
@mendebil 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul B I used a belt drive. This keeps the motors on at all times which limits my job time to about 30 minutes (heat builds up).Also precision becomes an issue without microstepping... You can't go higher than 1/16 with arduino. The machine is strong but I wouldn't CUT metal with it until I change to screw transmission. It engraves aluminium well at slow speeds if the belts are tight. Electronics will take a while to set up - not much on the forums about motor drivers in particular. Software is fiddly and you have only bCNC for OFFLINE ( :D ) autolevelling. Probe pin A5 is notorious for getting fried so you need some protection (I found none so far) or many spare arduinos (3.5 USD /pc). Planning is key! Keep the z max travel under 5cm and set axis bearings as far apart from each other (increases stability, though it reduces working area). Use the weakest NEMA motors you can find. The belts will skip well before the motor loses steps ;)
