Hi Mariel, Great question. I've never heard of using anything but Olive Oil for Pesto, but doesn't hurt to try. Does it matter how thinly grated the parmesan is? My roommate and I purchased a 24 oz bottle of kraft grated parmesan at the store about a week ago and haven't opened it yet. The parmesan in the bottle is almost powder like, so I was wondering if it would still work.
@MardellHill4 жыл бұрын
Hi Anya, A fine powder of cheese will make the pesto more dense. The quality of the cheese will also enhance or deduct from the pesto flavor. Try making it with the ingredients you have on hand this time. Then, next time try it with a hand grated block of Parmesan and decide what’s best for you 😋 Be sure to subscribe 💃 and thanks for watching my video!

No nut pesto is good, I suppose. If you can't find pine nuts and you still want to make the recipe, make w/o the nuts like Mardell, but you can also use sunflower seeds instead of pine nuts which when I last checked was $17.99 per pound. Sunflower seeds is $7.99 a pound and more economical.
@MardellHill6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for trying this recipe. Great idea about sunflower seeds as a substitute for pine nuts. As mentioned, for people with nut allergies this recipe helps them enjoy pesto. Also, since seeds are related to tree nuts, caution may be necessary with adding seeds. Thanks for watching my video, be sure to subscribe for more great recipes :)
@jgam64327 жыл бұрын
do seeds count as nuts?? could you substitute sunflower seeds/pumpkin seeds/etc??
@MardellHill7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can substitute seeds such as sunflower or pumpkin (papitas) instead of nuts. However, seeds & nuts are in the same family &, while a person may be sensitive to one, another may work find for them. Also, seeds & nuts may become rancid, causing digestive issues... Freezing or toasting reduces the possibility of bad bacteria or mold. Enjoy!

This is such a brilliant recipe. I've been looking for a pesto recipe which doesn't contain nuts as I am allergic to nuts. I wanted to ask do we have to put cheese in the pesto or can it be optional and if we do need to put cheese can we use cheddar cheese instead or parmesan cheese.
@MardellHill6 жыл бұрын
Mg Goh, I am so pleased you like this recipe. It took a while to perfect it, so, I’m not sure about exchanging the cheese. Honestly, I think cheddar cheese will not work, cheddar works best in a cream sauce. Also, the Parmesan (hard) cheese, hold the basil & garlic mixture together. Therefore, omitting it altogether will not make a pesto, just an olive oil, basil & garlic pasta toss. Feel free to experiment and let me know how it goes 👌

@MardellHill3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vinay, That's a great question. During the video shoot, my director did not catch the mistake and it was not discovered until editing. While confusing, it was an innocent error. I apologize. Use any salt that best fits your needs 😀

Himalayan salt is rock salt or halite from the Punjab region of Pakistan. It is mined at the Khewra Salt Mine in Khewra, Jhelum District, Punjab, which is situated in the foothills of the Salt Range hill system in the Punjab province of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is located approximately 310 kilometres (190 mi) from the Himalayas. You can also contact mercola.com OR seasalt.com to find out more...

What is Himalayan Sea salt? is that even possible? Himalaya is the name of a Mountain range in Asia where i live and there is no Sea in the Himalaya? As far as I am aware of.

Hi Thinley Palden Dorji, thank you for watching my video all the way through. You, in fact, caught an error while in production that my director didn’t catch so we couldn’t retake the scene. Rather than throw out the whole video, we just posted it knowing the recipe itself is amazing, no matter what salt you prefer to use 👍 Thanks for reaching out. Enjoy this pesto with whatever salt is your favorite 🙏 Be sure to subscribe for more great recipes 😁 And, have a wonderful day!

Mardell...let me guess...you're not Italian...That grated parmesean cheese was store bought already grated? Don't use that. There's a chemical they add so the cheese doesn't clump. Buy a wedge and grate it yourself. Add more oil on top of the basil leaves so your machine has enough lubrication to do its work from the beginning.

Thank you for watching my video again! For ease of use in a video, I chose to have the cheese grated in front of me at the local health food store. But, self grating is always an option for everyone. Great contribution. Be sure to subscribe for more great videos :)

Pesto with no pine nuts is NOT pesto. It's a basil paste.

Ok, that's important.

It's pronounced ba-sil. I'm Australian and we pronounced it like the English do - ie the correct way.
