You must be reading my mind!!!! I have been trying to figure how to incorporate my shop-vac for three of my stationary tools in my little workshop -- and this is PERFECT!!!! I know what I'm doing this weekend!! Thank you, again, for being such an awesome educator. 2 1/4" is the standard size for a door knob hole hole saw, IIRC.

No need to measure and fit the individual blast doors. You can just build the whole layer from one side to the other. The doors don't have to be precisely centered over the circular openings as long as they fully cover it. So you fasten one side, put a blast gate next to it, then fasten the divider on the opposite side and work your way across, making sure that the blast gates fit snuggly before you fasten the divider.

Oh, wow, such a simple solution for an annoying problem I'm having... I have a festool dust collector and have to keep switching out hoses for various tools (it's a long story as to why). So, I have several different sized hoses (and no, I can't just buy an adapter, again, long story)... With this, I can just make different sized holes for the various hoses. THANKS FOR THIS! I have a CNC, so making this will be easy.

I built this great item. My vac hose is 2 5/16 inch diameter! I don't have a 2 1/4" forstner bit, But I used a 2 1/4" hole saw. I enlarged the hole with a Dremel using a small drum sander bit. It takes about a minute to enlarge the hole for a Good hose fit. I drilled 7/8 inch Finger holes in the blast gates To make them easier to grab.

This is a great one.

I made something like this a few years ago but I decided to put a single blast gate sliding horizontally in a box with a single hole that lines up with the hole in front but exits out one hole in the back (with angled baffles to direct debris to the hole) . This uses a single motion to change ports. It's similar to a deft cleaning blast gate but as it closes one hole it opens another. Any bits that get caught only requires removal of the hose to clean out. Only had to do this once though in the 5 or so years that I have used it (pretty much every day)

Great idea, James~! I've been looking thru videos of others for a manifold solution and yours looks perfect...and perfectly simple~! I recently put in my 4" piping for the HF dust collector I modified into a 2-stage dust-zilla, so I may try to scale your plan up to accommodate it. There's a video out there by a guy called "well done tips" who used magnets in a sliding configuration that's worth checking out. The sharp angles and space for turbulence here will have a pretty significant impact on suction.

I like the concept ! Also, you could use a single length-wise blast gate, with a hole in the middle, and slide it left or right to change the air flow to the two extremities

Another great cheap useful idea. I made similar single blast gate by simply sandwiching the gate and made slider longer so it doesn’t fall off. Silicon can seal any air leaks etc., there’s a million ways to do it but I really like yours because there’s some nice simple skills involved and it’s easy to make and very useful. I may consider magnets to seal top and bottom and still make it easy to separate to clean. Thanks for sharing this. And btw, some people complain about the click baits and commercial but I think it’s a small price to pay for getting quality content from you, and others. After all nobody invests in all this work for nothing and viewers should respect that.

A good and afordable advice , I think 🙂👍 One could cut a round log, hollow it out in a similar way and have a rotating inside valve but then one only gets one active opening at the time, then again most of us have only small weak shop-vacs that cannot handle more openings

Old project. I have built several of these manifolds for a standard 4" dia hose vacuumn system with 5 blast gates . I sloped the ends and used velcro to hold a plexiglass window front. This allows me to see the vacuumn is working and it can come off to clear any blockages.

I would add small stoppers to the thin boards being pulled in and out. Just a tiny screw and nut would work, but there are a million options (so long as they won't fall out into your vac system). They could be attached to the sliding board at a position farthest back inside the hole (when the board is shoved closed), which would allow the largest amount of opening without worrying the pieces will fall to the floor and get lost or messed up. If you wanted to get fancy, you could notch out the housing to allow a niche for the nut and screw at the front of the hole, which would ensure there was no airflow being lost, because you could still pull the board out fully.

Built one similar some time ago. Not nearly as refined as yours. I find it to be very useful.

I made a plenum for 6 tools with a blast gate for my table saw, band saw, router table, miter saw, surface planer and drill press. I attached each tool but the table saw and router table to shelves that were hinged inside my off feed bench. I adjusted the height of the surface planer, and miter saw so that their "table" was flush with my bench top and when the tools were folded down into the bench each tool's lid was flush with the rest of the bench. I used counter sunk 180 degree hinges on the 5 lids. one lid covered the plenum. Power Tech provided a funnel shaped vacuum device that formed the bottom of the plenum and helped direct the collected dust into the 2 1/2" flex hose going to the cyclonic dust collector which was in turn connected to the shop vac. DIY BLAST GATES were mounted to the plenum's top so that I could collect each of the tool's dust by opening just that one tool's blast gate. Perfect, no, but much better than no vac. I also plugged each tool to a multi outlet and the multi outlet to a auto switch designed for the shop vac. regardless which tool was switched on the vac activated automatically. This set up for my 10 x 20 utility shed greatly reduced clutter and gave me back my floor space I had lost from all the floor mounted tools I ended up selling.

Brilliant! I’ve been thinking about how to create this very thing every time i snake the hose from behind my chop saw to hook up to the mini router table near by. 😊 I’ll be using a bit and brace to bore those large holes; ole timey woodworker style.

This could be a great CNC project.

Jonathan Katz-Moses posted a video over a year ago with an adjustable manifold that uses magnets to hold the main vacuum line. You just slide it side to side depending on what circuit or machine you are using at the moment.

I am literally working on a shop vac project right now. I just upgraded my filter and bags to HEPA, I installed a cyclone collector to a 15 gallon canister with a gasket, upgraded some hoses, and added an automatic on/of switch. This would be a perfect manifold for my mobile work station that has my table saw, router table and downdraft table. My long term plan is to get a larger dust collection system (along with a bigger shop), but in the short term, this will work great! Thanks for the tutorial you have a new subscriber here ;).

I like this version a lot, I think I'll do the same! I was left wondering though, if that narrow space and hard angle reduce the air flow much? (At least the two holes on the sides)

I solved my dust problem. I pay my son $20 per week to clean the shop... Some weeks, there is nothing so easy 20, other weeks, sucks to be him.

Built mine! I found using a child's size silicone bracelet makes for a nice edge seal on your hoses if they're a little leaky

Great little project, thanks James. You think it would help (or be worth the effort) to use double sided tape to attach the thin strips for the blast gate? Wondering if that would help with sealing it up, but maybe the hoses go past those pieces of wood when you insert them, so it wouldn't matter.

Oh... you have a HARVEY bandsaw. Let me borrow that. I'll bring it up as soon as I'm done. The project I have in mind is building a 1500 ton merchant sailing vessel and its launch, cutter, barge, and jolly boat. Or something.

I have something similar but the lower half is a triangle pointing down. Much less pressure drop and never needs cleaning out. The front and back sides are 1/4" ply and the left and right sides are 3/4" thick by 3.5" wide pine. Bottom is 1.5" by 3.5" like yours. No need to rout out the box inside.

You can also 3D print a 4-hole-to-1-hole gate (with 3 caps for the unused ports) out of TPU filament. It ended up being less work for me and I finally had a reason to use my TPU filament. Pretty rugged too.

Instead of three holes closing individually it would be more efficient to have the hose on a sliding head that aligns with one tool at a time, so trash is always going straight thru the valve and maintains air velocity with less snagging. Downside is you can only use one tool at a time.

James, love your videos. Where did you get the male hose connector visible at 5:58 and connected to the single hole at the bottom of the distributor?

I wanted to convert my jointer to helical spiral cutters , so I called "My wood cutters " last July an ordered it and that was seven months ago , and I'm still waiting!! and if that's not bad enough I had to take my jointer apart to measure for the new cutters, so I've been without a jointer for the past seven months which really sucks!!!!

Does that wide area reduce the cfm or velocity? I was about to do something like this but feel when the air hits that wide area, something will go awry or atleast a negative impact?

Just need to add a motorised drive to the blast gates to open and close them as each machine is turned on and off!. I have an annoying habit of forgetting to connect the right hose to the right machine, or even turning the dust extractor on, until it's too late 😀.

Great idea but may I suggest that gates have a stop to prevent them being removed completely. The gates would have to be installed during assembly and slots would be needed for the stops, so as not to reduce the hole size. Without something like this. I can hear a lot of expletives as they are opened, dropped, and clatter on the floor.😎👍

We are working in a abrasive industry, we are using pulsing for cleaning catridges but dust get in between pleats not getting grounded?

45deg leading to bottom of manifold leading to shopvac, so less airflow resistance, and less chance of debris starting to clog inside. A couple lovetaps will likely losen debris without having to remove anything.
