Homemade short tail mud motor from Ebay plans. Cost was around $1000.00 with motor, more than I hoped but still lot less than a new factory built one. Did waste money on few things like stainless steel prop that was to small and the V-belts and pulleys which did not work. getting the drive shaft, turn and tilt bolts tapped cost around $175.00 but was $300.00 initially but the guy messed up and took a long time. Tried to tap them myself but with steel was to hard and took a professional lathe. Lots of metal sheeting I got from a local metal shop where i can dig through their scrap pile. I highly recommend getting a MM measuring tape if you go with Ebay plans.

Aluminum props and sprockets are from Mud Skippers.

So small update. The sprocket on the shaft came loose. I had pinned it in place and it held for a long time and a lot of miles but let go about 3 miles from ramp. So I welded the hell out of it to the shaft! Just do that once you have it 100% in place! Trolling and rowing for miles is no fun!!

Are those blueprints comparable with any motor or small motors? Interested in selling the plans?

@@sm0k1ngam3rs3 the guy who made the plans built it to a 9hp motor. I put 13 HP on mine. That's mainly why I had to go with triple roller chain over V belt. You can get plans off eBay from him. He also has a video on KZfaq running it. Look for a homebuilt short tail with yellow engine.

How do you seal the crankshaft in the tube? Where did you get the crankshaft? Looks cool.

Sorry just saw this. From 5 seals per the plans. They seem to be holding still.

So you just straightened the taper in the propeller? Not tapered the shaft?

Yes. The propeller is soft aluminum from mud Skipper and was easy to tap out to 3/4 thread to match what i had shaft dia threaded to.

I think it would now that ive been running it for a while and it seems fine. especially if you did extra welding on it here and there. i did in some places around the mount. i considered the 22HP but its same RPM as the 420, so only gives more torque and hole shot. which would still be nice but at $600.00 more that 420 didnt want to do it. 420 has no problem getting it moving in the weeds. also its geared to 4-4.1 I remember right.
