A South African work friend introduced me to Ouma rusks a little while ago. Luckily there's a store where I live, where you can also buy them - but I prefer to make things at home by hand, just like my grandmother taught me. Thank you for your video!

Lekker! I have a long history with South Africa dating back to 1986. I lived there for 3 years and have been back several times. I miss the food and the people. I'll try this recipe with raisins.

no need to whisk the egg and buttermilk for 5 minutes, just combine it. no need to mix it with a knife or knead it either. jus mix it all in with hand untill fully combined

Recently we got some Ouma rusks to compare to my rusks made with this recipe (condensed milk version). No contest; the originals taste awful in comparison. This is, by far, the best rusk recipe out out there.

22 jaar in die UK, wanneer ek SA besoek eet ek myself in 'n koma aan die tuisgebakte beskuit wat jy kan koop in plekke soos die Superspar in Clanwilliam. My britse eggenoot is dol oor die groot spar en laai altyd ons trollie vol van die baie lekkernye, die karringmelbeskuit en melktert heel eerste. Ek voel saam met jou Steve.

Update: first batch of rusks done. Delicious 👍 not far off the original Ouma flavour. I found that 1 hour of drying with door open and one hour with door closed did the job. 3 hours is probably too much.…

Did you use a fan oven or normal oven for drying these rusks.
