Homemade train / rail cart riding on abandoned railway tracks

Last summer, I built this wooden rail kart from scratch. It's powered by a 8HP briggs and stratton engine. The power is transmitted to the wheels by a selfmade 'transmission' with parts from a lawn tractor. It can go up to 50km/h (31mph), the speed is not limited by the engine's power but by the weakness of the wooden base. (it starts to vibrate quite alot around 50 km/h).
The 20km long railway has been abandoned for more than 10 years and is quite steep for a railroad. The maximum steepness is 20mm/m (2%) but it is often close to 10mm/m (1.5%)
Fun fact:
The last train that drove on this railroad never got to the train station, as the modern passenger train got stuck on the 20mm/m part of the tracks because of the wheels losing grip!
Click here for PART 2:
• Go karting on abandone...
Click here to see a slideshow with some photos of my rail cart:
• PART 4 - Building proc...
Unfortunately, some people destroyed it and stole the valuable parts, there is not much left of it, only the wooden base and the seats.

The dream that sticks in my mind to this very day happened when I was in middle school. This is when I lived in Las Vegas, and while adults went gambling, the desert was my playground. Many times we thumbed our way to Lake Mead and camped there. We roughed it, and I mean rough. We only had some goodies in backpacks and water. Lake Meade is freshwater, so we weren't going to be in danger of dehydration, although I almost drowned. There were railroad tracks somewhere in that desert. I would look at them and imagine I was on one of those silent movie hand-crankers moseying along the tracks under the bright desert sun. And this brought all that magic back.

Great job guys. A good way to re-use an abandoned railway. But railways should never be abandoned to be replaced by road service

+Inse van houts I absolutely am interested. I am on vancouver island and want to put one of these together. I am a steel fabricator and want to build mine out of aluminum. I am having a difficult time trying to find wheels. What wheels are you using.? I guess an 8hp is plenty of power for the cart and 3 people? Where are u from?
@insevanhouts
@insevanhouts 8 жыл бұрын
+ChiefJustice Middleton The next one I am going to build will be made of aluminum too, it's so much lighter. Wheels were the hardest part to find for me I managed to find them at a local lumber yard, he bought them at a retired coal mine not far from here. I know there are some being sold on eBay in the US. But the shipping costs are often outrageous expensive. And yes, 8hp is enough for an aluminium cart. My 8hp 4 stroke briggs and Stratton engine was able to pull my super heavy wooden 'train' with 5 adult passengers, and it had only one single gear (no gearbox) ! So don't worry, 8hp is plenty for you. I don't know if your railway is very steep but it should be no problem, mine is quite steep too. I am from bourgogne, France Thank you for responding, I would love to see some photos or videos of your future rail cart!

+Inse van houts I want to build one. My sytem is generator and electric motors. For el. motors I dont know which one I will use AC or DC. For DC I need variac to connect generator and DC motor to adjust speed ( higher voltage = higher RPM) and for AC I need frequency generator for AC motor speeds. For brakes I will use switched magnetic poles method on stator to slow down the rotor and some classic disc brakes. On main control panel I will put voltage, amp, meters. Meters for speed and for fuel. I will put diesel generator. I will use steel wheel with springs to have low bouncing force

BlazingBashTV that was what I wanted to do in the beginning, a generator in combination with some car batteries and a 24v truck starter. But my plans changed when someone gave me the 8hp briggs and Stratton engine. I'm not familiar with electric engines so I don't think I could give you useful tips. I don't know if you care about the costs but from what I (think to) know, frequency generators are quite expensive. And as for the brakes, as far as I know the 'regenerative' braking does only work for AC motors? I'm sorry if I'm telling BS ;) It seems like an interesting project for me!

This looks like it would be LOTS of fun. I would love to do this and I can see where people would gather on the weekends just to cruise wherever the rail takes you. A small group would be lots of fun if you had several cars and had the ability to travel far enough so it took a couple days to go out and back again, and you could camp along the way just like people used to do way back in the day. That would be a really fun way to break up all the rubbish in one's daily life, at least for me...

So cool! Ive wanted to do this since i was a kid. I lived next to the railroad tracks and walked them from a young age for fun. On the tracks or the service road that my area has beside the tracks- which guaranteed a clear safe road to easily exit to when a train came. Ive always wanted a vehicle to ride the rails. Now that i see people make them for dead lines i really think i could make one. A couple of railway axles, a platform, a motor, some belts. Not something that i couldnt see myself making.

Wow! What fun!!! Do you know when that railroad was first used and when they abandoned it? I love the history of railroads, too :) I hope you're able to use those tracks for many, many years!!! All the abandoned railways eventually are turned into bike/ped paths here, but at least they're not ripping them up and then flattening the land for a field or something like they did to some of the railways many years ago. After seeing your video, I really wish we had some old rails left behind around here!

This is awesome! Good work! I've always dreamed of building a homemade train, but I had no idea if it was even possible. What did you use for the wheels? That's my biggest question. I'm really amazed that a small engine like that was able to move the cart so fast, but on rails you don't have as much rolling resistance, so I guess you don't need that much power. I really want to do this someday, and I do know where some abandoned railroad lines are. I just have no idea how to build it.

ct92404 hey, thank you for your comment! I used some minecart wheels. And yeah it's really cool that such a small engine could get us moving, even uphill! It is quite ecological too, as it used almost no fuel!
