This is the BEST non-greasy homemade whipped body butter! It is luxurious, it absorbs quickly, and most importantly it truly works.
In this video, I will walk you through my absolute favorite homemade whipped body butter recipe made with all natural ingredients that you can pronounce. No chemicals. No nasty stuff.
This nourishing body butter is adapted slightly from Carly Daley’s recipe at Modern Hippie Health & Wellness, which is fantastic- check it out! modernhippiehw....
I’ve made her exact version several times with great success. However, it does require several ingredients that I didn’t initially have. So, I’m going to share with you a slightly pared down version, to hopefully lower the intimidation factor if you are just diving into making your own products.
Here's what you'll need.
Ingredients:
53g (approx. 1/4 c) Unrefined Shea Butter
26g (approx. 2 T) Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
33g (approx. 3 T) Jojoba Oil or other liquid oil
4g (approx. 1 tsp) Organic Beeswax Pellets
1-1/2 tsp Arrowroot Powder
1/4 tsp Vitamin E oil
Optional: 15-20 drops essential oil
Tools:
A clean container (for storage)
Double boiler OR small heatproof bowl and sauce pan
Electric stand or hand mixer
Optional but useful: Kitchen scale
Instructions:
Combine shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, and jojoba oil in a double boiler or heat safe bowl that fits on top of a saucepan. Heat an inch or two of water in the saucepan to a simmer and set the bowl on top. Gently stir until everything is melted.
Remove bowl from the heat and let cool for a few minutes. Place the bowl in the fridge for about 30-40 minutes or until the oils cool and thicken. The mixture will begin to turn opaque but you should still be able to squish it with your finger. (If it turns rock solid, you’ve gone too far- just let it sit out for a while or remelt it if necessary.)
Transfer your oil mixture to the bowl of a stand mixer (if you’re using one.) Now add the arrowroot powder, vitamin E oil, and optional essential oils. Whip on high for about 3-5 minutes until peaks form, very similar to whipping cream. When the mixture has reached the optimal point, it will cling to the back of a spoon or spatula without falling off.
Spoon your luxurious homemade whipped body butter into a clean jar or container.
I can’t wait for you to try this out! I think you are really going to love it and the end product is pretty impressive. For more information about this recipe, check out:
thecrunchyging...
How did this work for you? What essential oil combos are your favorite? Please let me know if you have questions!
Thank you so much for watching!

Update: Used Soy wax (5g instead of the 4g of beeswax you'd mentioned), used 13g Safflower Oil & 33g Sunflower Oil as the carrier oils, to replace the coconut oil, and reduced the arrowroot powder to 16g (1 tbsp) instead of 24g (1 and a 1/2 tbsp), and it came out absolutely fantastic!!!! First time I'm making body butter and I can't believe it's sooooo good! Thanks a ton! :) Namaste from India.

Love your video so much but in this recipe of yours if you were to preserve it when will you add your stearic acid
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
I have not worked with stearic acid, but as I understand it, it acts as a buttery/waxy emulsifier in lotions and creams. I don’t believe it is a preservative. If you were to experiment with it, I would suggest reducing the beeswax and adding it to the melted oil phase. Although this recipe does not contain a preservative, it is made with only butters and oils (no water) so it should give you a nice long shelf life as is. (Approximately the date of the least fresh ingredient you use.) Hope that helps a little bit!

I have another question... I was reading up on the ingredients of this recipe, but I want to use it for my hair. So the question is will the bee wax damage my hair if I put beeswax in this recipe? I just don't want to put any other stuff in my hair. Also if I use this for my face does a bee wax cause negative reaction to the skin on my face?
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
Beeswax will not damage your hair. Most waxes and balms contain beeswax to add hold and the ability to shape hair (or facial hair as in beard balm). But I would imagine this formulation would be a bit “heavy” for some hair types. ** I don’t use the balm on my face, but not so much because of the beeswax, more because of coconut oil which can clog some people’s pores. Sometimes the beeswax can also be comedogenic as well, although the percentage of it in this recipe is fairly small. If you do not have acne prone skin and are looking for a deeply moisturizing spot treatment, it might be ok for you! (I use plain jojoba oil on my face every day for a non-comedogenic moisturizer- it’s also an excellent make up remover!) I hope that helps! **edited to add: I want to say that I stand corrected! Seems like lots of folks use body butter in their hair with great results! I think my initial response was a bit short sighted because I have super fine/straight hair which would dissolve in a greasy mop if I put it on my hair lol. I would love to know if anyone uses this in their hair care routine and how it works!

Can you use corn starch in place of arrowroot? If corn starch is not good to use in your opinion can you tell me why
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great question! Yes, you can use corn starch instead, although personally I have always used arrowroot powder. I like the arrowroot because it has some of its own skincare benefits (helps promote healing of the skin as well as absorb extra oil). Also, I use it in cooking and baking so it’s what I keep stocked in my pantry. Some folks don’t like cornstarch because it’s often GMO. But the cornstarch should also work to absorb extra oil from the body butter. Some of my viewers and blog readers have reported back that they don’t think it works quite as well as the arrowroot. I hope that helps!

@TheCrunchyGinger

I think kokum butter is quite a bit harder than coconut oil, so I don’t think it would be the best substitute. You could probably use kokum butter in place of the Shea/cocoa butter, though. Or if you are looking to avoid coconut oil, babassu oil might be the closest alternative. (I have not personally made these substitutions, but based on consistency I believe they would work.) @TheCrunchyGinger

Coconut oil is a tricky thing to substitute since it’s a bit unique in texture and melting point. I find that it helps maintain the fluffy consistency of this body butter. However, I have read some folks saying that babassu oil is the closest substitute. (I haven’t yet tried it, so I can’t say for sure how it compares.)

🤔 if you have more of your butter/oils, I think I would try adding more of your body butter base to the mix. Gently remelt it all together and re-whip it. (Basically just increase the size of your batch to match how much of the arrowroot powder you added.). Hope that helps!

Hi, how long I can store it, can I keep it for 6months ??. Will it melt if I keep outside, because the weather in my country 32 to 33 degree normally. Should I keep it in fridge
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 4 жыл бұрын
Since there is no water in this recipe, you can expect a nice long shelf life. I would say at least 6 months. A better indicator is to check the expiration date of your base ingredients, and go by the date of the soonest one. I haven’t had an issue with mine melting at room temperature. The beeswax does a good job of helping the product maintain its consistency. But to be fair, my home usually doesn’t get much hotter that 75-80 F (23-26 C) so I can’t say for sure if it would melt at 32-33 C. If you do find that it starts to melt, you can always pop it in the fridge and whip it back up. It’s pretty forgiving. I hope that helps!

Not at all! I’ve had the experience adding a bit of colloidal oatmeal which leaves a slight grit. But the arrowroot powder incorporates smoothly in this amount.

Does the body butter harden when completely cooled, or keep it's whipped consistency?
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica! At room temperature, it keeps its whipped consistency! (Kind of similar to like frosting or whipped cream cheese.). If it’s very cold it gets a bit harder. And of course if it’s very hot, it will begin to soften/melt.

Hmmm...Well, I'm not sure if you've got any lying around (I don't!) but candelilla wax is generally a good vegan substitute for beeswax. I haven't tried it in this recipe, but I would suggest using half the amount because it is harder than beeswax.

Will this recipe stay whipped ,or does it dizzy down?
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
It stays whipped at room temperature! If it gets hot, it will start to get melty. So if it’s very hot where you live in the summer, you might consider putting it in the fridge. (The only time I have had it melt on me is when I shipped a jar through the post office to my mom in the summer time to the southern US 🤦🏼‍♀️☀️)

What is the shelf life and does it stay fluffy?
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, it does stay fluffy/whipped at room temp. (I would think that if it got very, very warm it would begin to remelt but could be cooled and re-whipped.) Since there is no water in the recipe, the shelf life should be at least 6 months to a year. This will depend on the "freshness" of the ingredients you use. If you check the "use by" dates of your butters and oils, this will give you a good idea of your time frame.

What happens when it’s too runny? How do you get it be thicker? Thanks
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 4 жыл бұрын
If it still seems runny when you whip it, try sticking it in the fridge for about 10 minutes or so and then give it another shot. This happened to me today, actually! Because it was a bit warm in my kitchen. If that’s not working, you could melt it back down and try adding a little more beeswax.

That is quite warm! I would recommend storing the product in the refrigerator in order to prevent it from melting. You could also try adding a bit more beeswax . Make sure that it is pretty cold (but not rock solid) before you whip it. I often have to leave my mixture in the fridge longer in the hot summer months in order to get it to whip up properly.

I have no beeswax but my unscented tea lights are made of palmwax
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 4 жыл бұрын
I am not overly familiar with palm wax, but I think sometimes it can be blended with other oils for candles. Also it is difficult to say whether the quality of the wax in your candle is the same as what you would want to use for a cosmetic. All that being said, if you do decide to give it a try, I believe palm wax is quite a bit harder than beeswax. So you definitely want to reduce the amount you add! Hope that helps a little.

What is arrowroot powder?
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! It’s a flavorless, white starch made from a tropic tuber (the arrowroot plant). It’s used in similar ways as cornstarch (thickening sauces, etc). And it’s great at absorbing extra oil, which is why it helps to make body butters less greasy. It’s helps absorb a bit of the extra oil that doesn’t absorb into the skin.

Thanks is for reaching out! I’m sorry you found it greasy. Here’s a few tips/troubleshooting. Feel free to whip in another spoon of arrowroot powder to absorb a bit more oil. A little goes a looong way! Start with much less than you think you need and rub it in before applying more. The skin can only absorb so much at a time. When making the switch from commercial/store bought body butter or lotion, remember that this is a different product. Water is typically the first ingredient in those products, and this butter is made of only oils. So think of it as kind of concentrated. I hope that helps a little bit!

The beeswax helps it hold its whipped shape, thickens the body butter, and helps it stay solid. Without it, you will still have a nice body cream, but i imagine it will not keeps its whipped texture and will be somewhat thinner.
