Today you will see me tackle one of the most overgrown lawns that I have worked on.
I was mowing for an elderly man across the street (future video) when I saw this house and how overgrown the grass was. As I was finishing up, I flagged down the homeowner when they were walking to their car. We got to talking and I asked them if I could mow and edge their yard for FREE. Little did I know this would take me 3 full evenings…
This is some of the most overgrown grass that I have seen. As I was edging it, I was peeling parts of turf off that were almost 100 lbs! As you will notice, I got into a process to cut back the edges.
This process includes:
1. Cutting down the tall grass around the edges with the trimmer - This time, I used my residential grade Echo SRM 225. As you can see, it did really well for me and provided all the power that I needed. I chose to use this because it was REALLY hot and it is the lightest trimmer I have.
2. Defining the edge with the metal blade stick edger - For this, I used my residential grade Echo PE-225. This edger is awesome and super light weight. There are times where I could use a little bit more power, but after this job, I couldn’t be happier with it.
3. Scraping the grass and turf off the cement with my garden shovel - This part is by far the most tiring as I am picking up heavy dirt and grass over and over. However, this is a necessary step because I can’t run my mower over these turf strips to suck them into the bag.
4. Blow away the remaining dirt and debris - I used my commercial grade Echo PB-9010T for this. It was the MVP of this job. Without its power, it may have taken me an extra day or two to complete this.
After about 8 hours of work over 2 evenings, I finally revealed the entire sidewalk. I had around 10 bags filled with dirt and grass. Each bag was so heavy that I couldn’t pick it up and had to drag it back to the curb.
The 3rd evening is when I was finally able to trim and mow the tall grass down.
This transformation is one of the most labor intensive I have ever done, but the results are worth it!
The homeowner was absolutely shocked at how the lawn looked. They kept telling me how they never knew they had that much sidewalk. I am so happy that I could help get their lawn looking as it should and it will make their lives easier when mowing in the future. Doing this made my heart happy and I was glad that I was able to help someone out. I hope to do more of these overgrown lawn makeover videos soon and spread some good in the world (especially now because we really need it).
If you enjoyed the video, please like and subscribe so that I can continue to put out content like this. Thanks!

Watching the grass get pulled up from the sidewalk like carpeting was ridiculously satisfying. Wild how the things a lot of people don’t think about, like sidewalk maintenance, have such an impact on others. My mom was a wheelchair user and this would have been impassable for her before cleanup.

I've done lawncare for almost 3 decades and it's crazy how many times there's not just a covered sidewalk, bc those you cans usually figure out bc the sidewalk just stops at a certain home. But the crazy ones are paths leading up to porches or whole patios people never knew they had.

We don’t always have the tools and resources to pay for our own home + other people on the street. It’s also not our business, for the most part (unless you live in a co-op). And even if we could have the resources, we put them towards our savings and children and selves. That’s ok. It’s nice that Spencer does this. I'm even more impressed with you being 79 and posting this comment on KZfaq. My 80 year old father has never even sent a text or an email message. He watches three TV channels: ESPN, the western channel and whatever channel Blue Bloods comes on. Until my mother got a remote with voice command, she didn't know how to switch from Netflix to regular TV to Amazon Prime. You impress me.

@@dunkone40 oh dear. I'm a senior and I am so DONE with folks thinking it is amazing anyone over 70 can figure out texting, internet, using kindle, smart phones, Google..... How old do you think Bill Gates is? He and Steve Jobs were born in 1955. I realize you were attempting compliments but......please don't generalize. The doddering oldsters who cannot figure out a remote control ? That is not age-related it is simply a question of lack of know how.......those oldsters taught someone the basics back when -- why not return the favor when new tech is available ? Re the video: I say Bravo to the guy willing to lend a hand to a neighbor in need. The one thing some seniors cannot accomplish is physical chores due to limitations so a helping hand from an able bodied person can be a godsend. We all need to help where and when we can as we are able....especially in todays divided world.

@@mgbsecteacher Code enforcement is typically more concerned with the vertical height of the grass than they are with cosmetic encroachment. HOA and local codes will vary. There's also the matter of the easment to be considered. It's not a simple answer. It would be interesting to know how diligently that same municipality addresses potholes in the street. If they're not diligent about addressing potholes, they will likely be even less so with the cosmetic encroachment on, or maintenance of, their easement.

This was satisfying to watch! Reminds of my family’s current home. My wife and I got married and needed a place to raise a family. We bought an acre of land with a single wide trailer on it for $40,000. While the trailer was in decent shape, the lands not so much lol. It was essentially a junk yard with an old decaying house on the land. My wife was skeptical at first and I remember telling her “in 5 years this place will be how we want it to be.” I remember my mother and father coming over asking me “son, what did you do?!” took 4 years to get the land completely cleared of all the junk, the old house, and overgrowth. If I wasn’t at work, I was working in the yard picking up junk and spreading dirt. In those 4 years we got our mortgage paid off and built a brand new house where the old one was. We sold off the single wide and now we have a nice looking home. To this day I’ll be outside mowing or weed eating and someone in the neighborhood will stop by and tell me they appreciate what I’ve done, that the neighborhood look nice again, and that I saved this property. Always feels good cause I worked my ass off on it. Now I get to sit out back and admire it in the morning while enjoying some coffee. If you pulled up on it now, you would never guess that it was in the shape it was in. I love my wife for having faith in me because even though she couldn’t see it at first, she knew I saw what this place could be. We have two boys now with a 3rd one the way and they have plenty of room to play outside! It’s a great place now to raise a family.

Obviously you haven't had much dealings with Bermuda grass. If not cut back vigorously it will take over just about everything. It can crack concrete, if there's water to be found it can find a way into your house and pop up tile. Grow through connections in sewer pipes and clog up your sewer piping. Once this stuff gets going unchecked it can do tremendous damage. BUT people like it because it's tough and hard to kill. If kept up with it makes a nice lawn.

Hey brother, when you're edging with a spade, put your toe against the spade about 5 or 6 inches above grade. Dig your heel in and you can use your foot as a fulcrum. I spent 25 years doing installs and managing maintenance departments and I've dug MILES of edging that way. It'll save at least 3 years of your back. ;) I also recommend a King Of Spades shovel. They're heavier but, especially for scraping concrete, they're way less effort than the lightweight ones.

some of those sidewalk swatches would make good sod patches! if they can grow on concrete, i think they'll grow anywhere! i liked how you used the edger to clean out the sidewalk expansion joints. don't see too many people attempt that but it works. keep up the good work. looking forward.

I can't believe I'm watching this! My dad would love to have had you for a neighbor! He trained us to always find the cement, whether it was snow shoveling or edging once a year. Our edger was human-powered: the long wooden handle, rubber wheel with the metal teeth that you had to push back and forth. I live on a farm now and have NO cement to find unless it's a barn stall! Once in awhile I'm asked to house-sit or maintain someone's yard in town and I'm right back to finding the cement and where it ends! Haha! Thanks for the memories!!

The city where I live requires landlords/developers to install their own sidewalks. The result? Basically no sidewalks in any part of the city that's developed since the 80's (which is most of it). Where there are sidewalks, they abruptly end at lot boundaries.

My dad and I, use to mow and trim lawns for customers. It was a lot of work but gratifying once we were finished. We restored many sidewalks and lawns and a few driveways. Surprisingly, it's quite common that property owners will let their weeding and grass just go wild. If a property owner would neglect their property...for a year...their lawn would become a forest, just that quickly. Mother nature doesn't play. Nothing better than well manicured lawns and sidewalks. Thank you for sharing this video 📹. I don't know how it ended up on my feed but I'm glad it did. 😊
