Honestly, he has a remarkable ability to stay in ok shape. He eats enormous and downright inhumane amounts of food, and yet manages to effortless sit at 235 lbs. Despite not being healthy, when you compare what he is compared to how he eats, it really is quite impressive.

One thing I always loved about the heyday of the Simpson's was there would be jokes that were funny at face value then you find out years later there was a second underlying meaning. That scene when Homer's in hell being force-fed donuts is a good example. There's a somewhat famous book called Homer Price where one of the main themes is an unstoppable donut machine. That show was true genius for about 5 or so years in the early 90s.
