Here's how you can make your tap water safe for drinking. In today's video, we're going to be installing a Reverse Osmosis System from Kinetico. But first we're going to be testing the water that comes out of my taps, and comparing it to bottled water to see if it's really safe for drinking...

The initial do you need one test yea do that independent, but it sounds like he's calibrating doing water testing more to check how to calibrate it. You can probably hit this guy up and be like yo make it taste like deer park. You can also buy a version of that meter he's using for like 20 bucks, and it doesn't really catch everything. Living someplace the water stains things pink, but it says it's cleaner than bottled water. If you want to cheat that gov standard they're talking about too, you can get the gov to check it for free, but they're incentivized the other way, because the gov doesn't want to fix there shit.

Hello from Flint Michigan! Worth a mention is things like arsenic which over time can even be potentially harmful to bath in. Whole home ozone treatment systems for these situations are pricey but well worth every penny. Arsenic can be found near farmland in the ground water from use of chemicals/pesticides over time.

$2100 for a Kinetico RO system is just too expensive for my blood. I'm certain this is an excellent system, otherwise you wouldn't be endorsing it on your channel. I'm sure it's a great option if you're into getting all the testing and customization which I'm certain is not done free, it's a premium which is baked into the cost of doing business within their business model. As for me, for years I was using the screw on tap connected PUR carbon activated filter and it suited my needs for some time. Then 5 years ago I did some research looking for a high quality RO system and found Home Master being highly rated and they had many different options. I went with the Artesian model with the remineralization cartridge for something like $300+ at that time. Home Master uses a wider diameter supply line (I think 3/8") and it also has a pressurized overflow tank. Both of these features ensure a high pressure water supply while cheaper systems will have lower flow rates and eventually slow down over time. The Home Master is a complete DIY project and I only needed a 3/8" hole drilled in the sink. No drilling into the countertop required. One thing of note with all RO systems is that there's a significant amount of water waste. Most models, including the one I bought wastes 80% of the water (4:1 water waste ratio). Home Master has an optional permeate pump which has only a 50% water waste ratio (1:1). If you're looking for an excellent but cost effective solution, I'd suggest Home Master. If you want to pay for the customization and "free" testing, then Kinetico sounds great, but it won't be cheap. Also, I've seen some cheap options at Home Depot but my advice would be to stay away. If you're going to go with RO, then don't cheap out. Get something that's quality and highly rated. For my money, Home Master met the best balance of being quality yet cost effective. It's 5 years old and still works great.

@robertgiresi9515

@@expressfashionman89 The water bill didn't go up very much at all. The RO water is only used for drinking water, making coffee, etc. You don't use it for washing dishes, washing fruits and vegetables, etc. Keep in mind that the RO water comes out of it's own separate tap. Although with the remineralization cartridge, you will need to descale the coffee maker periodically.

You can drink softened water. If the hard water has 150 mg/ltr of calcium coming from the well, there will be 150 mg/ltr of sodium in it after treatment. A glass of water might be 50 mg, 2% of the recommended max of 2300.

I have a waterfront shoreline well where the water is so-so, being river water filtered through some sand and soil. Hard, with rust from dissolved iron, and sometimes stinky. I made my own ozone treatment system by installing a 200 gal HDPE reservoir tank in the basement, kept full by the pump in the well, and drawn from by a separate pump that pressurizes the house. I pump air, using a pond aerator pump, into the tank, passing it through a 360 mg/hr UV ozone generator made for purifying large aquariums. The air pump and ozone generator runs 24/7, using about 100 watts. The ozone that bubbles in the tank is vented outside. The water then goes through a 30 micron prefilter, a softener, two large 5 micron carbon filters, then a Sterilight just in case. The ozone kills whatever was in the water, and oxidizes the sulfur and iron getting rid of the rust and smells. My tap water is like bottled water (except it's been softened, but you can't tell) and is in fact processed a lot like bottled water is. Cost about $1500 cdn.

TDS doesnt test impurites. Impurities will show up but if you add calcium and magnesium to water a much needed nutrient. It will show up on a TDS meter. RO companies go to your house and show you a TDS reading and tell you its all impurities. Also I love RO systems and have one myself. My RO comes out at about 4 TDS then run it through a remineralization filter and it up to about 120 TDS.

tds meter is like 20 bucks on amazon and tds does not mean it is bad. You need to test for what is actually in your water. A dow filmtec RO membrane is like 30-40 bucks and that is what removes everything from the water.

Jeff, I love your channel and your knowledge of construction and remodeling is beyond compare. I've learned so much from you, especially how you always remind us, "don't make it complicated". However when it comes to techy things and let's face it water filtration is like knowing the difference between a screw drive and a pair of pliers. Not a lot to understand and about as easy as it gets. Bottled water should be a four letter word there's too much plastic in the world now and bottled water plastic is the worst contributor I can think of. One other thing you should have gotten a dual filter R.O. It takes 2 gallons of water to get 1 gallon of clean water, a dual system will reduce that to a half gallon of wastewater. Then let the wastewater feed outside to your garden at least in the warmer months..

Reverse osmosis is overkill unless you are running a lab with very specific needs. It wastes water and has a charcoal filter for taste at the end anyway. At home I use a simple charcoal block by Brondell . It costs about 50$ a year for 2 people. It removes 99.99% of contaminants from my municipal water. If anyone tells you that you need more they are selling you snake oil. Ottawa South sometimes has ridiculous amounts of naturally occurring fluoride in well water. Often triple what is added to municipal water. Atrazine is another one I worry about in some areas.

@@beaker2k Ya, not much a charcoal filter can do about ammonium nitrate. In the country you really need to spend the money and get a proper lab test. You have no idea what is in the water. Jeff, as an engineer who is part of a team who treats water for a municipality in Canada, it's my opinion that you should provide the sources for your claims that chemical use is increasing and infrastructure is impacting water quality. It's extremely complex, and I don't pretend to know it all, but it's dangerous to share comments like that about something as critical as our water supplies without proper sourcing. Rural well services are a completely different beast than providing water to people from a water plant. Can you provide the sources to your claims?

The water softener, depending on the type of resin bed that is used, will remove iron from the water supply. The semipermeable membrane in the reverse osmosis system will also remove some iron. On a water supply system such as well water with high iron content, more than 2 to 3 parts per million, a water softener will not remove all the iron. The resin bedding in the water softener is designed to remove mainly minerals that contribute to water hardness.

I used a similar RO system for years but changed to a Berkey water filter. Not as convenient because it's a big can that sits on the counter and you simply pour tap water (or even pond water in an emergency) into the top and delicious water comes from a tap on the bottom. There are several advantages to the Berkey system. 1)The filters seem expensive but filter 1000's of gallons which results in only pennies per gallon (fraction of a penny per liter). 2) You don't rely on pressure from a municipal or well source. 3) With an optional filter installed you can remove several contaminants that RO can't including fluoride, lead, mercury, etc. 4) Berkey filtration doesn't remove dissolved minerals which are important to your health. Drinking water that has minerals removed may actually cause leaching of those minerals from your body. 5) A Berkey unit is relatively portable. There are large and small stainless models ranging from about a quart to a few gallons and you can also DIY a container and just buy the filters. 6) A typical RO system wastes several times the amount of filtered water that it produces, something like 7 units of waste for each unit produced. There are probably a few more but that's off the top of my head. If you're curious I suggest you do a little research to check my stats.

You shouldn't ask someone who sells something if you need their product. They'll often say yes, even if you really don't. Do your own research. Here's a few points: 1.) Don't rely on one of those TDS meters to gauge how good your water is. They can't tell the difference between what's good, bad, and really bad, just that *something* is there. And bottled water, especially RO filtered, has minerals added to it for taste. To my knowledge, the stuff they add is after, and doesn't count towards, the measurement for goverment TDS limits. 2.) You don't need to have someone come to your house to test your water, even if it's "free". You can buy a kit online, for ~$150 (potentially less), where you fill up some vials and send them to a laboratory. They do detailed testing and give you a report of EXACTLY what's in your water, and how your levels compare to government regulations & guidelines. The field tests don't test for nearly as many things (namely, the more difficult and/or expensive ones to test for). 3.) You don't need to spend a fortune for a filtration system. The K5 system has a list price around $2,000 (and is only available installed by professionals), which is 8x what I paid for my install-it-yourself 6-stage system. If you're DIY inclined (and this is a DIY channel!), it's fairly simple to install an undersink system with its own tap. The hardest part is drilling through your sink or countertop and installing the tap (like the video says, if you have something tricky like granite, I recommend getting a countertop pro to drill it unless you know what you're doing and already have the tools). The second-hardest, in my case, was finding a good place to attach the RO wastewater drain to the sink drainpipe (if you put it too close to the sink connection you'll hear it draining). 3.1.) The price difference between the K5 system and a good-quality DIY option is NOT worth it. For the premium charged for the fancy feature of knowing exactly how much filter life you have, you could replace filers on a conservative schedule for YEARS before you've made up the difference. The holding "tank" on this model is also tiny, the one included with mine can hold several gallons (exact amount depends on water pressure).

Ok I don't like how the second guy state a perpetual myth Our body does NOT need 7.5 pH water. Stomach acid is 2 pH. Kidneys pump in bicarb. Our body nullifies fairly quickly pH changes in blood. Whatever pH the food or liquid you ingest is well NEVER cause a change in blood pH, and if so it'll be very minimal and transient. Also, physiological blood pH is between 7.35 and 7.45. If we truly needed water at 7.5, that would cause issues as now you are under alkalosis conditions which changes all sorts of body functions. Same goes for acidosis. That single comment dissuades me validity of all his testing as now it's tainted with the doubt of him having a kit designed to prove their product right.

@@FrancisKoczur this is well known. But you don't NEED 7.5 pH. And acidic drinks, within normal foodstuffs, is not detrimental to health in the grand scheme of things. Teeth are not considered essential organs. You can live without them (see all old people missing several and still doing fine). Aside from that, comment is regarding effects on blood pH which is what all the false claims from water companies saying you need x pH for health (usually alkaline). You're claim regarding teeth is irrelevant to that regard and does not alter my statement.

What's the price?? I can get 18l jug refilled for about $2.75CDN (15cents/liter) now I have to bring the jugs to a store an fill them but that's 2 blocks away. I have a pump I got from Amazon for $80 that lets me pump the water from my utility room to a small tap beside my sink. I could not find a system that cost less then me getting the water myself. all these systems were about $300 starting then change a filter every 3 months and when I did the cost per liter it was like double or triple the cost! Looking at this unit were talking anywhere from $1500 - $3000 I guess if you live in the country you really don't have a choice but if you live in the city get 4 bottles and find a local water store that does the RO for you for much much cheeper then these systems as long as you don't mind changing the bottles.

Changing the Ph in you body is not exactly the healthiest thing you can do. You shouldn't drink alkaline water every day, every few days and a liter or less is all that is needed. I heard PH above 9+ is really good for smashing out heartburn or acid reflux by either reducing or eliminating pepsin which is an enzyme directly related to acid reflux. But, be warned changing your Ph levels in your body from normal to elevated can cause other things to happen within your body.

FYI: People get the majority of the daily water needs from food. I've had a pH/TDS and temp meter for years with calibration chemicals. They aren't expensive. pH should be above 7, copper pipes will erode when lower. The two types of neutralizer are disolving minerals and injecting chemical. Mineral adds calcium and/or magnesium. Chemical injects a caustic solution of sodium bicarbonate or sodium(or potassium) hydroxide and should be proportional to the amount of water. Reverse osmosis under the sink systems are a commodity don't over pay (Should be under $200). You can get one that adds minerals for the taste. Water softeners replace calcium and magnesium with sodium, but can also reduce dissolved iron and manganese. Calcium and magnesium prevent the detergent's surfactants from cleaning and instead remove the minerals which leads to more detergent being needed. Iron filters remove iron and manganese usually with a manganese dioxide filter medium. The water needs to be at a higher pH (around 8) and needs to be oxidized to precipitate the iron and manganese. Iron bacteria, and sulfur are cans of worms you need to go through yourself.
