Finding friends has been so hard for us and is still such a struggle. I've tried everything and put forth so much effort, but I've reached the point where I've thrown my hands up and will just let opportunities come me. I've seriously considered moving to a larger town because of it.

My son goes to a "hybrid" school. It's a blend of private school and home school. He goes two days a week and I homeschool the other three. The teacher creates the lessons using the curriculum we purchased at the beginning of the year and parents/guardians teach the lessons at home. I really like it because he gets the parts of school I love (friends, class parties, field trips & dress up days, and most importantly learning from someone other than me - gets a different point of view/way of teaching) but I also get a hand in what he's learning. While the lessons are created by the teacher, I can add to or tweak the lesson as long as I'm covering the objective and completing the work that is due. It's not as expensive as I originally thought it would be and it helps having a support team (his teacher and other staff at the school). His school goes K-12th so it's a school he can grow with. Search for one in your area because I had no idea they existed until I googled, "part-time school" and it's really helped me.

This has been the hardest part for us. We live in the middle of nowhere, outside of a village of 1,200 people. We can not even get internet where we live lol. We are not apart of a church, and I don't know of a single homeschool group. I'm hoping this spring/summer I can try to get my kids out todo things at our rec. Starting homeschooling during covid has been rough.

Church is a huge place where my kids have friends... but we have a homeschool coop near our home and my son will be starting next year. And my kids are really good friends too ❤

As a homeschooler, I only have friends from public school, I can't really do co-ops (because there not really good around here). I do volunteering at my church but I don't really make too many friends there. I particularly want to start talking with more women (because I only hang out with guys) and It's hard to do that here.

I have always said that giving my kids the chance to develop friends is something that, as homeschoolers, you do need to be aware of and will have to work harder at. Being consistent is key. Not church hopping and being a part of all the events. If you sign up for a coop or sport, you go a little early and are there for every meet up. Contact local businesses or museums to see if they offer a homeschool day. Often times places do or are willing to offer one at a discount.

All three of my kids play sports, go to youth group, and take some classes. But none of these environments have fostered friendships. They all feel like these are opportunities to learn and thus don't talk to others when they're there. As for church, they have deeper friends there, but not DEEP friends. it's been a challenge.

Yeah those places are hard to make good friends. We made good friends from co op and our nature free play group. Maybe find a homeschool Facebook group that meets up for play and other activities?

Finding friends has been a struggle for us. I took my kids out of private school and away from their friends to begin homeschooling. I feel like I ruined that opportunity for them. Most of our homeschool groups here are all for older kids. They haven’t really been able to make friends at church cause they are not given the chance to talk to one another while their in bible study. I guess it’s easier for some but not all. They are both in dance classes but again, they are there to learn and dance and not given a chance to converse much with the other kids. It’s stressful for me. My personality also keeps me from getting involved in big groups or co-ops. I don’t have time for the meetings and all the “mom talk”.

Random question. I have a 13yr old adhd daughter who has always struggled in school and just barely passed. Now that we are homeschooling the thought of high school terrifies me! We are repeating 7th grade. We are using masterbooks for science & history. We have writing strands & easy grammar for language arts. I’ve bought a ton of books to read. I recently purchased one writing prompt from brave writer. I’m having a moment but I can’t think of the name of the online math we use. Maybe time4learning. I’ve recently bought a Gather Round unit to try. I was an elementary Ed major and just didn’t finish my senior year due to finances but I had a 3.833gpa. I was smart. Lol. I’m curious what curriculum you recommend for high school for a struggling child with adhd? I want her to have the option of college even if it’s only a trade. My other 4 kids always thrived in school so I’m not sure which way to go with her.
