Not having school age children I am at a bit of a disadvantage . However I did work with the school system and children are NOT being taught the things they will need to know to get through life. I have been exposed to children who are being home schooled and the difference is measurable in favor of the homeschooling. Keep up the great work and fear not.

For the people who worry about homeschooling kids not meeting the „public school academic standard“ - google Alma Deutscher and her sister Helen. Homeschooling is about fostering your child’s true character and talents WHILE giving them a general education. Not the other way around.

Great advice and tips on homeschooling! Who better to teach kids than their own parents who know and love them best and know what learning styles they thrive in. Yes, I love how you said you love exploring the kids interests right there under your roof. At home, you have so much more time to develop those interests than they would get at school. Love your “Can do” positive outlook. People forget that public schools are a relatively new thing. Before that, people got educated at home and civilization not only survived, but thrived!

I've homeschooled for 12 years now. Great video, very informative. I think it's important that people know it doesn't take a ton of money to homeschool as well. I get this all the time, people asking how I afford it. With the internet and libraries, there's a ton of free resources; books, worksheets, educational videos, etc. I've never used a set curriculum. It's not only cheaper not to, but way more fun to tailor make your own.

My husband was homeschooled K-12 and got a full scholarship to a well known state University and graduated with a Master's degree with honors, and so did his younger brother. I was homeschooled all the way through also, but I chose personally to not go to college immediately. I ended up getting a job right away and then I got married fairly young. I think I would have absolutely had no issues with college, had I chosen that route... I was a good student and hard worker. Homeschoolers can really do anything that they set their minds to!

Learning how to learn is so important for work and also post secondary!!! I was shocked at the amount of people that I went to university who had a formal public education and didn’t know how to analyze a piece of writing, they just didn’t understand how to pick out themes, foreshadowing etc. and couldn’t write an essay. There was a lack of learning how to think critically.

Love your learn how to learn ethos. I coach Project management and STEAM skills with High-school and University level. For years I also was a hiring manager. It amazed me how many university grads who were traditionally educated don’t have the ability to know how/what to learn and to apply critical thinking skills. The job landscape is constantly changing, aptitude and attitude were the capabilities most important to my hiring decision. Research has shown the EQ is a bigger indicator of happiness and success than IQ.

Thank you for posting this- it was very encouraging for me. We are independently homeschooling for the first time and I chose to pick some subject curricula that I thought both my kids, 7 and almost 4, would enjoy doing together (and if the 4 year old one didn’t feel like paying attention then whatever). I feel really good about my choices after hearing you explain about history and literature for your children.

We homeschooled both girls, they dual enrolled in our local college their senior years of high school. Oldest is a college grad (BSN) and works as an ICU nurse with 6 other nurses who were also homeschooled. Youngest is a senior at university pursuing a double major. We were fortunate to live in a homeschool friendly school district so they were able to take elective classes throughout their schooling. We also had a local co-op they participated in and they were able to play AAU club volleyball. Between those, church and 4-H there was plenty of socialization

I love love love this video! My children were educated in the public school system and it was a horrible experience for myself as a young mother and my children. There are so many different personalities and ways children pick up information and public schools are a very structured system that doesn't leave room for how so many different styles of learning are needed for our children. My daughter had an extremely creative way of learning which doesn't work with the narrow structure way schools teach. My daughter was made to feel small and lost and slowly fell behind because she wasn't understood. It broke my heart to here my daughter (now an adult) tell me how emotionally she struggled to get through school. Also, my son who started reading when he was 2 years old and had a love for books slowly was beaten down emotionally because teachers would get angry with him because in kindegarten, he was able to read the words on the blackboard and tell the class what the lesson was. I feel as parents we need to really see whats best for each child and not be so concerned if they will fit in with others in this world. Their happiest and peace of mind will prepare them to function in this world. Especially if they are surrounded in a lovely and supportive environment to learn and grow. I am strongly going to encourage that my future grandchildren be taught at home. Thanks for this video!

My son was in public school for Kindergarten and 1st grade, he was treated horribly by "the best teacher of the year". I would get home from work at 9 pm and have to do all his worksheets and all his teaching for that day. I started homeschooling from 2nd grade. He graduated and started our community college and did well, but I took him to a psychologist I finally found and he was tested for ADHD, finally. He has moderate ADHD. He is now in his senior year of pre med at USF. He will go through med school to become a Physical Therapist. He wants to help others like he has been helped. I am so proud of him and YES, kids with a learning disability do excellent in homeschooling!!

We are 100% pro home school all the way. My wife and I both graduated with degrees in education, and she taught in the system for 3 years. Not being political, but even in public school, at least 90% of what that students gets concerning education must start on the home front. So why not keep it 100% on the home front? With our two oldest, 10 and 8, we are going to transfer them in to public school in order for them to participate in organized sports, per what they want. In the case of the 10 year old, she has met all the criteria of an intermediate tract (college prep) high school senior, so she is going into 6th grade as a gifted student, and they are accommodating her in a way that will keep her challenged by having her mentor other students and be productive. Of course, with the Covid thing, these plans could be adjusted if the local district decides to do distance learning. We'll see. But please know that anyone with an ounce of sense would support what you are doing!

We were part of a homeschooling coop for a year. It was a real struggle for us. My kids were wanting friends, but no one seemed to be a good fit. All my boys, I have 3 are really mature for their ages and the coop put the kids together depending on their age, so my kids didn't like it much. My 13 yr old would better fit with a 15 yr old and my 16 yr old shares the same friends as his father. My 7 yr old has some same age friends, but I can see he's starting to quickly outgrow them.

I was homeschooled(basically unintentionally unschooled) 2nd-12th grade and unfortunately my education was extremely neglected. I wish my parents would have put in the effort and thought that you have. Even with the challenges my lack of education has created throughout my life, I do believe that homeschooling can be a great option. I am currently 40 weeks + 1 day pregnant with our first child and have always felt very strongly that I would NEVER homeschool my own children. However, depending on the state of the world, I may rethink that when the time comes. Thank you for this thoughtful information!

homeschooling can be the worst experience and the best............ it really depends on the commitment of the parents. If you want your children to have a better experience than you did.......... be a different homeschooling parent than your own parents were............... your kids will love it, and love you for putting the time, energy and effort into their academic formation. You can do this and make it a great experience for all of your family.

I would say sing songs, read books to her (very important for language development), let her paint/colour etc. And play play play since young children learn through play. If you child likes to learn numbers and letters, not too much formal like worksheets, but more in a playful way with games/hands on activities. Also sensory activities with water/sand/rice/clay. And games and puzzles. I like the channels "The parenting junkie" and "Hapa Family".

I’ve recently started looking into unschooling. I’ve homeschooled my daughter for 3 years with the good and the Beautiful curriculum. We make it work for us but recently I have the desire to focus more on book reading rather than book work. She also learns so much by just being creative and playing or cooking with me. I love homeschool. She has so many interests.

just do not neglect her math skills............. math is invaluable...... and must be learned through practice....you can put off science and she can pick it up in college......... IF she already has a good math foundation.

@@magen2271 cheers! homeschooling in an unschooling way and exploring the world through their interests sounds amazing. I remember making my kids memorize the states/capitols in 2nd grade. They learned so much more about the states when we took a road trip across the country from CA to MN to TN and back than they ever learned from those flash cards!!!!!! just don't neglect the math!

All four of mine got into college! They went to Texas A&M, MIT, Rice and Columbia...all four also received scholarships from their colleges as well! You need to keep an official transcript for them, but it can be done! My youngest, graduated early and went to Columbia at 14! By the time his peers graduated HS, he was 17 and graduating college! He took off a year, then went back and received his PhD

Occasionally, I get info from my friends in our former homeschool group on homeschool class opportunities to pass forward and I've got one for you if you are interested. I left the information in my discussion tab. It's an opportunity to sign up for a MO. history class before Sept 21, 2020 when it begins.

Are there any Canadians in the Facebook group? Or parents that aren’t 100% sure if they will be homeschooling this year? I’m tempted to join for now since it’s closing soon, but I’m not sure if we are going to homeschool or not. School starts in a month here in Manitoba and we are still waiting to hear what our school’s plan is. Our 7 year old daughter is deaf and we will pull her from school if there will be masks.

Do you have a group for moms who aren't on facebook? Our family moved to a state where we have no family or friends and I'm desperately searching for other homeschooling families near us!
@DoloresJRush
@DoloresJRush 4 жыл бұрын
Contact your state homeschooling association and ask them for a local support group to join. Our state association is Families for Home Education (FHE) fhe-mo.org/ Or, look in a home education magazine for groups in your area. Here's one: homeschoolingtoday.com/ Or ask at your public library to see if they know of any local groups. Our support group used the library for educational classes, show and tell projects, books and media, and sometimes volunteer opportunities. smile! Or ask at a local bookstore. I used to moderate at a free online homeschool forum at a defunct website called Old Fashioned Living, but I currently don't know of any off Facebook at this time. We also had a local support group meeting in our church's fellowship hall for several years and we were one of nine homeschool families that attended our church. I'd say pray about it too, if you are the praying sort, that God will lead you to the right group. Blessings on your search.

Would you say the homeschool group is only for families in the US? I am based in the UK and my daughters attend school but I am considering homeschooling, especially for my youngest who is Autistic. Would love to be part of a helpful group for homeschooling. Thank you😊
@DoloresJRush
@DoloresJRush 4 жыл бұрын
You would need to learn what your laws are concerning homeschooling in the UK. Our son was diagnosed with ADD/ODD by Dr. Grace Ketterman (she's the author of several books). He was in 3 different elementary USA schools for 6 years, repeating one year and he had a hard time socially. We finally brought him home to educate. Fortunately, he had speech therapy in one of those 3 schools or we would have had to find a occupational/speech therapist when we began homeschooling him. Do you have any therapy classes that your youngest is involved in at the moment? Can you continue it if you should decide to bring them home or would you have to pay out of pocket for the same? I was involved in a book project "Homeschooling the Challenging Child" by Christine Field = here she is being interviewed about the book = kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jsmpebOJqceqfWQ.html

i wouldn't say that! although we can only speak on our experience of homeschooling in the US & I'm not sure the regulations in the UK, we touch on the actual schooling -- which is universal!

@@preppingmama What is not the problem? I was just wondering if a homeschooled child has ever ended up with an MBA or Doctorate. Or are they just happy to drift through life? I ask because here in Switzerland public schools are good, standards high. Kids have to go on to University, Business School or do an Apprenticeship. Plus speak at least three languages, to even get a job. It is the same all over Europe to my knowledge. Thanks.

I don't know why anyone would be against homeschooling. It seems like a win-win for everyone. People who do want to send their children to school always want smaller classes. This is one way to get them.

I homeschooled my grandson and during his senior year, he dual enrolled at technical college for software developer specialist. He just graduated from high school and technical college with a software developer technical diploma. He was accepted into the software developer associate degree program for the fall semester and has already earned 20 of the required 62 credits. He applied for two scholarships and was awarded both. Because he was not a registered student in the local school district, he was not eligible to apply for any others and he wasn't eligible for free tuition/books. We paid out of pocket and felt it was a great investment. His GPA is 3.825.

Lisa, why not do this with your sister instead of these people . You are a very smart capable person, I think you should do this alone or with your sister. Nothing against the other moms. Your lifestyle is very peaceful and I think this changes things. Keep it in the family. You do not need to branch out in this way. You and your husband are doing a superb job. You are unique.
