We basically do school year-round but I lighten the load in the summer, sticking to math (finishing curriculum, reviewing or focusing on math facts), reading and writing.

My kids are in 4h so we are done with the school year right before fair. They get 3 weeks off, the week before, the week of and the week after fair off. We take about a week off basically every 6-8wks, depending on what's going on or when we get a little burnt off! Homeschooling 7 right now, 2 toddlers and an infant running around so days off are lovely! Haha

I allow two weeks off for every 10 weeks on. Sometimes we take a full two weeks off solid, sometimes we have many days off sprinkled throughout the ten weeks. Usually the first and last terms, we go straight through but the middle terms we use our days very liberally. This coming year I'd like to try a four day week, with Friday reserved for tests, field trips, cleaning the house, and science experiments, because those are things that were neglected this year.

I would love to try the year round schooling. During our summer break the kids end up bored too and then we have a lot of bad attitudes and fighting bc they do better with routine!

We school year round. I homeschool only my daughter with ADHD. She also happens to be my youngest of four kids. Two are grown with families. One attends the local high school. My husband is disabled, so he requires a lot of my time running him to mutiple doctor appointments, etc. My daughter has trouble sleeping (evidently a symptom of ADHD), and she also has multiple allergies. So, her health causes her to feel poorly a lot of the time. By knowing we will be homeschooling over the summer, we know we have that grace period during the overall year to do what is necessary. Also, a benefit is keeping the information learned refreshed all year without the "summer slide". She needs constant review. Like you said of a few of your own kids, my daughter also needs that constant structure or else she becomes (and I hate to say it but) "lazy". If we've had too much time off for illness, appoitments, death in the family, moving, etc. She looses her momentum. Then, it's tough to get her to crack the books. So, keeping a schedule ongoing keeps her focused that school work is indeed necessary. I never thought I'd say this, but I think all kids should school year round with periodic breaks to get refreshed. 😮😬😀

We always start about end of August. We keep a chart for each kid and they have to have 190 days done. Once they are finished they’re done! It works well with lots of kids since they can choose their own day off.

Great idea! And I am impressed that you get 190 days in. We average about 170 days each year.

We have done both. I'm also now to the point of saying year round. We take breaks when we want or when we need to.

My daughter needs a lot of reteaching. She’s 10 and wasn’t taught decoding/phonics, but whole language. So she can read but she’s stuck at a 2/3rd grade level. We also are relearning math since common core and engage NY was so confusing for her. Once I get her where I need her we will let up. She gets a month off when she visits my dad and her dad in Maine...but my dad and brother teach her a TON. She taught herself area and perimeter, angles and measurement just messing around with them in the garage. She knows basic mechanics. Makes up for her lack of ability for multiplication/division and reading/writing but still have to go back. School said she was mentally retarded (their words not mine) but she’s just got other strengths like art. I have a list of things I need her to understand by 12 and we will go from there, crossing each thing off as we go. But I only just took her out of public school at Christmas vacation. We’ve pretty much unschooled/lazy homeschooled for that time. We will start when she gets home August 1st

Kristin, I pulled my daughter with ADHD, several allergies, and a 2 year developmental & educational delay from school after her 3rd grade yr. I haven't regretted it one bit. It's the best thing for her. Good luck in your homeschooling journey.😀

This is how I think I'll do it (I have no kids yet, so I'm planning ahead): *Divide the year into six six-week terms, with at least one week in between. *The fall and spring holidays get longer breaks. However, one term (the omer term) fits tightly between Passover and Pentecost. *This makes 216 days, so any days lost to illness etc. don't need to be made up. *The start of year can be different for each pupil, depending on his/her birthday. *I'm not sure what to do with the extra month in some years; I may take it off completely, or leave it open in case more than 36 days had to be canceled in a year.

Thanks for the video. Great information to think about. I'd love to do year round school, but my kids like the summer off. We've been homeschooling for six years. I have three kids ages 16,14, and 11. We do Boy Scouts and have a lot of activities in the summer. My oldest is taking a few classes at the public high school too. I'll definitely rewatch this, take notes and discuss it with my husband. Have a good day.

Hi Janelle! I would love to hear in a future video what your eating plan is and how you stay in shape, some of your families favorite meals, if you exercise daily and how to fit it in your homeschool day, and how long a typical day doing BJU DL takes? Love your videos!

Great video! Thanks for sharing! It's comforting to hear that others do similar to what we do. We do year round also taking about 1 week at Thanksgiving, 2-3 weeks at Christmas, about 1 week at Easter and as needed/desired throughout the year. We also take birthdays off. We have enjoyed vacationing usually in September or October and then again around January or February. Those time periods are usually so much less crowded and cheaper to travel. I still consider making your own schedule one of the top benefits of homeschool 😊.

Hi Janelle!! Thank you so much for all your videos on homeschool... I am new to your channel... your homeschool videos and BJU videos have been so helpful especially because I just started BJU. I was wondering if you ever had to deal with kids not focusing and taking much longer to do work In a day than usual and what to do about it?? Also I was wondering if you ever considered making videos on how (US) homeschool moms can take care of ourselves with all we have to juggle with?? I love your makeup in this video... do you mind sharing?? Thank you again💕🌸🌺🌼🌷

Hi Monica! I'm so glad my videos have been helpful for you. I did a video awhile ago about homeschooling the reluctant learner that you might want to check out. Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apNpf9yB3pm4dI0.html I also have a video coming out soon where I talk about how long school should take a child. Keep your eye out for that one. I have had several moms ask me about taking time to care for ourselves as homeschool moms. I'll have to add that to my list of video ideas. It can be a challenge for sure!

We homeschool about the same as you; we adjust for things we need to do and things we want to do. I love your videos. I am thrilled to be using Math-U-See, Spell to Write and Read, and Science in the beginning this year. And thanks for the referral to Rainbow Resource! I am a member of several educational sites that offer discounts; but, Rainbow Resource has more, the prices are the same, or better, and the shipping is free! This year, I am going to start adding all of our filed trips to their homeschool ledgers. God bless you and yours!

We follow a similar schedule. We take a lot of breaks throughout the year when family comes into town. We are wrapping up math, spelling and science now. In the summer we will do our science experiments and finish history as a family. A whole month for Christmas though!? How do your kids stay busy? It gets so cold here that I’m afraid mine would just want to lay around and watch TV for the entire month!

Hugs! Homeschooling can feel overwhelming and often isolating for us moms. I do not homeschool in Arizona BUT there is an excellent group in Arizona that you can reach out to for support and questions. They are called Arizona Families for Home Education Here is their website: www.afhe.org/ AND... I'll be speaking at their homeschool convention in July 2018! I encourage you to attend. It is a great way to be encouraged, fellowship with other moms, get your questions answered and I'd love to see you there and meet you in person!
