Kick out the plastic wrap!
Carolyn, Rachel and Brianna show a quick and simple way to start switching your home away from disposable, unhealthy plastics and toward healthy reusable products.
A little beeswax, cotton cloth and a few old paintbrushes can save a lot of plastic wrap over the next few years- not to mention saving your family from the toxins leeched into your food from those plastics! Plus... they are way cuter than plastic😉.

My grandmother taught me to make covers for daily use to keep things covered but not air tight.. we just crochet a lacy edge around the fabric and attach beads on strings of the crocheted lace that anchor the covers so they won’t slip or blow off. They are good to cover dough as it rises and covers pitchers of tea etc. it’s another cover worth having and they last for decades!

@@maryjohnking5869 ...She took muslin and cut it into whatever size she needed...she made a small rolled hem around the edge and then she would crochet a little lacy shell stitch with a dropping chain stitch and she would add a bead and then chain back up to the edges and do that all around the muslin ...when it was on the bowl or pitcher it had a chandelier type effect it was pretty and very functional...I can't remember a picture as a child without those covers on everything...the beads she used were glass. I think you might be able to get a similar effect with store bought lace and thin ribbon to put the beads on...I don't think it will be as pretty but it should work. I hope I explained it well enough for you to get the Idea.

Thank you! I vaguely remember seeing these as a child, (59 now) Thank you for describing it so well, I can see it in my mind's eye. I'm going to look for pretty beads. My Mother and Aunt are gone now And I don't have them to ask, so having you respond is a Blessing to me. Shalom Shalom Sister.

You mentioned using baking sheets that you might NOT want to reuse for baking but, in the 1800s, bakers waxed their metal baking sheets to make the original non-stick surfaces. They'd just rub a chunk of beeswax over it. I read about it in the Joy of Cooking, my mother's favorite cookbook. It's listed under Cookies, in the beginning part where they explain the tools used for cookies. Now that I've written this, I think I may prefer to wax my sheets instead of buying expensive parchment paper!

I’m just finding this video but on this topic- I reseason my formerly nonstick cookie sheets (where that coating has come off) just like you’d season a cast iron skillet. One to two coats and it’s nonstick again (maybe not the prettiest) and they work like new.

I almost ordered some of these fabric beeswax wraps. I make sandwiches for my husband’s lunch and wrap them so he can eat while working without contaminating his food. I despise the waste of using wax paper. I am excited to make my own!

I use beeswax for sealing up my leather shoes and boots too. Makes shoes and shoestrings last a long time and easier to clean.

Your family is so beautiful and amazing! When I watch your videos, they bring tears to my eyes. I grew up with the stories of the Farm my grandparents had as a young couple. They lost their Farm to the Dust Bowls. They ended up in Colorado. I used to love listening to everything they told me. So when I watch your videos, it's like reliving all those amazing things I heard about! I remember my grandma telling me when she would milk the cow, she would squirt it right into my dad's mouth as a child. They talked about how delicious it was. I miss them everyday! Thank you for bringing all those wonderful memories back to me!

Best life ever city make me sick even i was born a nd raised in the city beirouth lebanon but been in scout we grew with love of nature and learn how to protect it i use to breed some chicken and rabbits instead of getting use to bad habbits like smoking drinking stalking girls till i moved to the gulf area abd started to earn for living the first thing i did i bought a land in Lebanon but i couldn't stayed there but in here gulf i do diving and i like it much been away of city so close to nature we human born from sand and die in sand i like this channel much its inspiring and educational we need to convey these knowledge to our generation sometimes all this civilization myght vanish if not we feel more human and more relaxing when we escape to nature tears falls for children hosted in cells grabbing a stupid i pod or i pad or laptop getting lonely back to nature drop stop stress feel more free and more living life and love

This is so much more cost effective than buying the wraps! The lowest I’ve seen them is $10 for a medium sized wrap! I’ll definitely enjoy making some smaller square wraps for glasses and jars. I have a large and medium sized wrap(s) right now. But I’d like another sef

No need to use the oven; once you spread the wax, top each piece with baking paper and literally iron on top of the paper. Much easier.

I make beeswax candles and melts these would be perfect to use in storing some items. I'm going eco friendly with packaging. This would work out perfectly. Thanks for sharing this with us! Your girls are awesome helpers!! Appreciate the lesson.

Weird! I've been making waxed cloths for years to wrap tools in to prevent them from rusting but I never thought of using them in the kitchen 🤦‍♂️ I found that a few passes with a rolling pin once the wax is still slightly warm makes the sheet somewhat more flexible. Don't know why, but there you go then...

Oh my goodness, I totally love this idea!!! I've gotta share this on Facebook, and I'm thinking multiple sizes, even glass or coffee cup sizes if I have to leave and want to save my coffee for later, or if I _want to chill a glass of wine!!!_ : )

Those sheets are Air Bake cookie sheets! They were invented by relatives of mine. One day, my aunt was baking cookies and her cookies burned. She turned to her husband who was an engineer and said, "Why don't you invent me something that will prevent my cookies from burning"? So, he took her seriously and did! 😉 The pocket of air prevents the burning on the bottom. You can even put it under a pie tin to prevent the bottom from burning.

I have 2 beeswax fabric food storage units. I bought them before learning how to craft them. I now need to find my pinking shears to craft a bunch of these. What a great idea! I HATE clear plastic wrap. The only thing I like about 'clear' wrap is that it's clear. Wonder how this would work using more sheer fabric. Most of my bowls are either stainless or crockery. Once upon a time before the common use of glass, windows were covered with oiled paper because it allowed light to enter the room.

If you use parchment paper to wax them on you could always fold up the paper afterward and tuck it away for use again when you make more or do another messy craft. Recycle reuse renew.

Brava! That’s exactly what I do, especially for regular ‘same usage’ until such time as it’s really time for a fresh piece. Eg instead of toxic poisoning of our food with Tin Foil (aluminium - which enters the brain =:() ), I use Baking Paper

I just caught one of your videos a couple days a go so I’m brand new to your channel and I was so surprised to see this video with your daughters. The video I saw before this one was by yourself and my thoughts was that you sure knew a lot of info and spoke very well to be so young and that your parents must have been making you do this since you were very young. I was shocked you had daughters this age. I guess it’s the clean country living cause you look amazing. I love this channel and I’m so glad I found it.

The wraps need some pine resin & some kind of food safe oil added to it too. Makes the wraps more pliable otherwise the beeswax alone is too hard & not pliable enough. Great idea love your apron & you are a beautiful family.

I was hoping her recipe would work. Is there something that could substitute for the pine resin? I've never been able to use these wraps because I'm allergic to pine.

@@CynBH you can use any resin, but the one from pine is the best because its properties as antiseptor.

@@CynBH Try damar resin. You can buy it online. I use that as it's cheaper than pine resin. I also add jojoba oil to my wraps.

Your girls are adorable! You remind me of my mom! Neat idea...I’ll try this. I’ve seen this done with an iron and parchment but you’re right, throwing away parchment is expensive.... plus You could use less wax and rewax the wraps as the wear out that would make them less stiff ...I’ve seen people add a few drops of jojoba oil to the wax pellets, melt them in a bow and brush it on like paint too. I think the oil makes them more tacky so they stick to themselves better. Thank you for demonstrating and thanks for being a cool mom. ☺️

Jane A you can also use a tiny bit of coconut oil to make them melt a bit easier, since coconut oil melts at nearly room temperature. You can also make a great dry skin treatment/chapstick by mixing coconut oil and beeswax-this also works great on pet paws that are dry or cracked (it’s great to put on before a winter walk to avoid getting any of the salt melt on the pawpads-it keeps them nice and soft and dry)

I just made some wax wraps and found that using an iron really helped. It allowed me to remelt areas and move the wax around.

ive watched a couple of videos on this topic and I love the way you explain things clearly, love the fact your daughters are involved. I would like to see more of your stuff on homesteading so I have subscribed. I am in the UK and just been learning about these beeswax fabric covers, I have been looking to get rid of the cling film stuff for a while as I am trying to get rid of plastic. I am also getting interested in fermenting so will be interesting to see if you do that, I see big jars behind you. Great

if you place a tick paper on top of the wax and iron the paper, that will melt the wax into the cloth; easier and less risky than the oven...

My Little Homestead , hello, I'm a new subscriber and am starting to change my way of living for health, the environment, and a more natural way of life! Just a quick question, I love these wraps and will be making them, but why are the beeswax pellets so white, and the chunk of natural beeswax the honey color?? Why are the pellets so white? I have a large square bees wax fabric with a wooden button sewn on one corner with a cotton string tied to the button and leaving a long tail, you can wrap and secure with the string by winding the string around the button

Similar to making oiled tarps. This is something I'll be trying with my niece when its raining outside and we need an indoor activity.

You don’t need that much beeswax. This is a project that less is more!

I was just thinking that cloth napkins would work great too! Already sewn and lots of great patterns. Would you recommend boiling the cloth first to remove any fabric treatments?

I love how beeswax wrap will stay on anything! When using Saran Wrap, it only stuck to glass! I love using my beeswax wraps over and over again on anything (jars, cups, pitchers, containers, plates, bowls etc.!!!)
