Here is a quick tutorial of how I build my own gabion walls from standard concrete remesh and galvanized wire. They are simple to build and can be filled with most types of large stones, rock, or concrete chunks. These are commonly available materials and often can be found free on craigslist. As always, thanks for watching:)

Note: sorry about the music levels in this video... never corrected the sound before uploading so the music is WAY too high. Didn't know much about the editing at this point....lol Anyways, hope you can at least get an idea about how I built these... and make sure to have your finger on the sound button ;) Joe

homesteadonomics You should put lights behind the sign that light up the rocks at night. Would look super cool. I like that. I want to build something like this that could help support an entire cattle wire fence with a wooden frame.

I have been racking my brain on what kind of fence to build for my front yard. This piqued my interest as I have loads of rocks all around here on the Navajo Nation. When I seen you filling the interior with broken pieces of concrete, I was sold! I have a pile of broken concrete that has been sitting in at the edge of my home site for almost a decade. I always thought, "How can I get rid of all this? Or how can I build something with it?" Talk about killing two birds with one stone. I will get on this soon. Thanks!

Very cool. I see a number of these and had no idea how simple they are to make until viewing your video. I now have a great way to repurpose the ugly concrete curbing in my back yard (I don't have to haul it away) and I can conceal the concrete foundation that has always been a problem with stucco falling off. Thank you for the video!!!!

I've used concrete mesh for projects, you can leave on the tag end of the mesh when you cut it and then bend it around the piece to be connected. Get a piece of small pipe to make the bend and you can avoid the wire failing.

I'm burying a shipping container; and this Gabion will keep the sides from imploding during the back-filling. This Gabion will also minimize metal corroding over the years. Thank you for showing how to build my own Gabion Wall. With as much as I will need, buying the Gabion Baskets would be very costly.

Are these light wire fencing strong enough to hold the sort of stone you're talking about, holding back earth next to a shipping container? I'd see this as more a visual thing rather than structural.

@@thesanfranciscoseahorse473 Gabion walls stop cars, they've been used around mosques and temples for that reason. Not sure if that's the type of strength that relates to structure like that, but they're definitely not nothing

just stumbled on this video - had seen many of these walls along highways and such, but sort of assumed they came in a block like a concrete pier block - never thought how easy they would be... isn't it amazing how something like rebar and rock can look so freakin' awesome! i think i might be tempted to get a little spray bottle and spritz the outside with a clear water based varathane to keep that 'wet' look colour.

Looks great! The only thing I would recommend - and I'm absolutely not trying to be a Safety Sally or trying to be to critical here - is wear safety glasses at all times while working with wire. Nice job. When I use that kind of stiff mesh, I only cut one end of the edge piece and use the other as a tie to connect it to the next piece. Hard to bend but they stay put. I also thought about hog ties when you were using small pieces of wire to connect the two mesh pieces. When I saw you put a Z bend in the cross wire to stiffen it up, I concluded that you have fencing experience. Thanks.

just a thought, build Gabion walls below your leader pipes with decorative stone on the exterior, line it with a tarp or some billboard cloth, then fill it with the same material used for bio-filters (sand, gravel and activated charcoal). then you could directly filter your water straight off the roof, and pipe it into your storage tanks..., filtered water with a beautiful touch.

Love your videos. Working on our own homestead in So Colorado. I don't know if any one mentioned already. If you cut the wire between the blocks, one past the size you want. You can just twist that up and around to hold it together. Will use more mesh, but you don't have to go buy any other wire.

billder999 New Zealand has installed a lot of gabion retaining walls that are very attractive (particularly around Queenstown) - both functional and aesthetic with some amazing workmanship. The cross ties shown in the video need to be tight (twisting in the middle with pliers is of no use because.when the rock shifts, it will create pressure that will stretch the wire and you'll eventually end up with side panel bulges). Also, suggest you double twist wire at edges every 6-9"" for additional strength.

Ha Ha. I love all the negative comments below. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona and these are all over. Have been for years. With our blistering heat (120 last June) to our crazy dust storms and torrential monsoon rains, these hold up great! They are galvanized! They will outlast me! And you really have to see them in person to appreciate their appeal. Totally goes with the Southwest environment. To be fair ( maybe because of the labor involved ) they are usually found in the high-end shopping centers and multi million dollar homes. You probably would be surprised at how many of your favorite athletes that live out here or have a second home here, have these on their property.
