How to Build a DIY Travel Trailer - Solar Panel Install (Part 11)

Today I'm installing 370 watts of flexible solar panels on the DIY Travel Trailer Project! In the video I'll show how I ran the solar wiring, installed the flexible solar panels, made the charge controller / battery connections, and ran everything in the trailer off of just solar and battery power. This represents the last major step in the build to make the trailer off grid capable and usable for camping!
..... But for those of you who have been enjoying this project, do not worry, there are still plenty of things that I have planned to add to this trailer in the coming year! A DIY awning, slide out kitchen, outdoor shower, interior bath area, etc,... just to name a few!
I also want to give a huge thank you to Sunflare Solar for donating two samples of their flexible solar panels for this project. They were super easy to install and I think represent the future of solar in both their design and manufacturing process. Sunflare is primarily a solar panel manufacturer for OEM Companies, but they do offer distribution through OK4WD.com. Here is a link to the sunflare panels

When it was topped off in July 1973, my dad and I got to ride up to the top with one of the engineers. It was built to sustain 100+ mph winds and the top would swing through a 40’ arc. If you jumped off the top you would hit the sides twice before you hit the ground. At the top the concrete is 4’ thick and at the base 40’ thick. I used to remember how deep the foundation but can’t recall now. When we were up on top it was a cold breeze blowing. 1,000 feet is something else to see!

A paint roller is a good choice to press the panels to the roof. The soft "fuzz" protects the surface and prevents cracking, it can happen. Just be careful.

Camping trip Yahhhhooooo!!!. Sir, I couldn’t get home fast enough, when my iPhone notified me this had been posted, while at the grocery store. Wife also wouldn’t allow me to watch during dinner. Really enjoyed the customization to protect the wires from the solar cells. Does the adhesive tape really secure the panels to the roof. I would worry that the tape would eventually degrade. Can’t wait for your video on the performance of the entire trailer. Happy Trails 🐎🐎 🤠 🤠.

Very clean good looking install, but without cooling airflow under those flat panels they will have a relatively short life. Cooling airflow under panels is critical and they will get very hot mounted directly to the roof. Even small wooden dowels run under each panel will allow some airflow.

Your work quality is awesome. You’ve definitely inspired me to take more time and just do things right the first time on my home projects. I tend to rush to get my own stuff done after looking after all the details on my customers jobs. Thanks for that. Just a quick note about solar. It’s really helpful to use a battery monitor. I really like the Trimetric from Bogart engineering. I’m not sure how well it’d work with your controller, but there are certainly other good ones out there. Without one it’s like not having a fuel gauge in your vehicle. You’re just kind of guessing all the time. We run a 28’ trailer that has a constant 1A draw because of the fridge and a few other things, that I can’t eliminate, and a 200W system with 2x6V batteries. It’s about 210 amp hours and we’re laughing. It’s plenty of output and I live in British Columbia so that’s a lot less sun than you! Anyways, thanks again for the great videos. Cheers

Great job on your travel trailer. Makes me want to build one out of my 12' utility trailer. I would suggest making a bracket for that wire channel that runs front to back just like the one you did for the channel that runs side-to-side. You will be experiencing a lot of wind as you are driving down the highway and that can become a very dangerous projectile at high speeds. Worth the extra effort to ensure safety!

Joe, I think you need to change the title to Tiny Home rather than travel trailer😁. Fantastically informative (as always!) and I hope you and the family have a wonderful camping trip.

Davion Hill woo woo!!!! Bt3100 is the greatest saw not made anymore. This is my second one....got it off Craigslist. Wish they still had them as I’m getting close to needing a new one. Such a great saw for guys like me who do a little of this and that and aren’t really a dedicated woodworker.
