I've just posted an idea Doug, I know you could easily do better, with some round bar stock and your magic welder. If you decide to make something I look toward to the fabrication video on your channel. Keep up the good work guys, by far my two favourite people on KZfaq
@awstott5 ай бұрын
I wonder if additional length would help? It almost seemed like the wood didn't have enough time on the bars to allow the small pieces to fall off. Having something to try and make the wood parallel with the grizzlies might help too? I'd be curious to see what you come up with Doug.

HI Adam, I think if the pitch of the bars were a little higher and maybe 4 inch wings on the sides this way wood would stay on the bars a little longer and allow the smaller pieces the slip through the openings and the new wood of the conveyer would push the splits off the bars.
@paulweakley34405 ай бұрын
I would decrease the angle you have those grizzle bars at (or decrease the speed of the japa conveyor). I think you'll get better results slowing down the rate at which the wood slides down those grizzle bars.
@l.j.b98635 ай бұрын
💡 IDEA - Whilst watching this I thought that surely you and Doug could make a slide 🛝 from round bar, running from below grizzly bar to just above IBC tote. The spacing between the bars slightly wider to allow kindling etc to fall though to some kind of container or collection chute below. I think it would be a cheap option with great results for a bit of metal fabrication. Would make a great video on Dougs channel too. You guys could improve this set up massively by putting your heads together.

I enjoyed the video Adam. I personally think the grizzly bars work well enough for your purposes. Like you mentioned, the only wood that was mixed in with the regular firewood, was basically kindling, and that’s good for a homeowner, making it easier to start fires with. I recently bought two cords from a landscaper who told me it was all 14-16 inches….hardly. Some was 20, some 16, some10! And all of the wood was covered with mud, which after freezing, may as well have been concrete. My point with all this, is that if your competitors deliver wood like what I got , then your clean, consistent sized firewood will always be a cut above the competition!
@HometownAcres5 ай бұрын

I have a eastonmade 12-22 and a wolf ridge fc-24 conveyor with grizzly bars. The bars do a great job of filtering out the fines and small material, which is what you don't want in your wood. The fines are what hold more moisture and can cause mold issues. The larger slash and bark that falls through is great kindling and should be marketed as such. Most people like having that in their load. I've been thinking of a way to hook burlap sacks to the bottom of the catch pan to catch the scrap and make it easier to dispose of.
@jasone6795 ай бұрын
Talk Joe into the same test using his Japa with the perfect clean built in, but not running through his cleaner. In all honesty I think stacking is the only way to get really clean wood, but yours will be way cleaner than the guys piling on the ground and loading with a firewood bucket.
@GrassRootOutdoorWork5 ай бұрын
I think you have to play with the angle of the conveyor and grizzly bar some. If the bar was more parallel to the ground it might filter more.
@dpmesse5 ай бұрын
Watching it, this plus could you make it vibrate a little somehow... to shake the bits thru before it falls off? The medium sized stuff has to land perpendicular to the bars to fall thru. If not it easily just slides on by. 2nd, some scrap steel stock and a little ingenuity I bet could produce a barrel type screener for a lot less than 5 figures... EDIT: parallel to the bars, not perpendicular.
@GrassRootOutdoorWork5 ай бұрын
@@dpmesse thanks, yes parallel. Also I wonder about the speed at which the conveyor yeets the split.
@dpmesse5 ай бұрын
@@GrassRootOutdoorWork Also, perhaps multi stage one? where the output has to drop down 'stairs' thus getting more agitated and giving swarf more chance to fall thru before the end... getting too large to dangle off that conveyor tho perhaps. Either way, good info for wood choppers.

I think the grizzly bars are fairly good investment. You do need Kinlinwood to start your fire. I also think you probably could’ve made a set of grizzly bars cheaper unless of course you have to invest in a welder. If you already have that stuff, the raw cost of the metal would’ve been less than the price you paid.

When I consider adding this type of equipment add-on I look at ROI and will it add to the bottom line. There are other factors to consider but they’re harder to put a number on. It’s a long way from $1K to $14 or $18K. And, other than less mess what’s the real value to a customer only if they have less scraps to pickup? Maybe tweak the current system, refine it and let your experience help others. But, more $$$? Nope, not for me. Enjoy you and Doug. He had a recent video on his Race Track garage floor which helped me make up my mind about what type to use in my garage.

The pieces of cut timber come over the top and has a small drop onto the separator. With a little touch up with your welder and extra hole for adjusting, have the separator an extra 6 to 8 inches lower so each cut piece hits the separator so it knocks of loose bark etc. It will be much better and more effective. @jimwiskus88625 ай бұрын
I think you’re getting into physics of firewood now. The drier the wood, the more the bark separates from the actual wood. The type of wood is a determining factor too. The smoother the bark the more it will cling the wood, the courser the bark the more the separation process will probably knock it loose. It’s too bad the shrapnel and chaff of the wood/bark can’t be boxed up somehow and delivered right along with the firewood as kindling. I think a better solution would be, just leave it on the ground. This would keep the ground from becoming a mud pit. Maybe you should look at a good chipper, have all the loose bark and residual wood drop into a chipper. You could mix the sawdust and chipped mulch. Spread it on the ground and have your own wooden concrete.

Good morning Adam, my two cents, catch the Splits / Chaff into the dump Trailer. The bars seem to only catch, dispenses Chaff that between the Splits and the Bars. Chaff on the upper side of the splits falls into the IBC totes. So I’d say save the $1000.00 and just process the splits into the dump trailer for cleaner customer valued results. Cleaner Splits may facilitate repeat customers and spreading the word of Quality and Satisfaction. 😊👍👍👍

Maybe invest any money for a cleaner into a local teenager instead. If you paid a teenager $15/hr, that's about 66 hours of stacking, which is about 30 cords if I remember the 1/2 per cord time correctly. It's not a capital purchase, but it does help the local economy, gets a kid outside instead of playing video games, and maybe teaches them a skill (e.g., also learning how to run a saw, the excavator, etc).
