Guys I don’t make videos longer than 15 minutes very often. This one is worth the watch until the end. So much valuable information and really smart ideas for making all of us more organized and saving us time. Big thank you to Doug for showing us all these tricks he’s learned over the last 30 years.

I’m so glad I spent the time watching this whole video, it gave me inspiration to go out and start clearing and organizing my garage tomorrow. I decided to split half my garage into tools and the other half is my outdoor kitchen, being said I need to organize the tool side and this video helped me so much, thank you guys, I also just subscribed to Doug’s KZfaq channel.

I was glued to this video for the whole hour.! Doug has an excellent approach to problem solving and efficient working. What impressed me the most about Doug’s workshop is the fact that he came up with a lot of cost effective solutions instead of just choosing to spend big money on over priced systems that rarely cater for your exact need. Also great work Adam on putting this content together.

I have a confession to make. I have gone back and watched this video multiple times. There are so many great ideas and things to see in this video that you just can't absorb it all in one or two "watchings". I am 60 years old and I can figure out how to organize things on my own, but seeing what Doug has done has shown me ways to organize that I would never have thought of. I share Doug's thoughts on being clean, neat and organized in my garage and seeing what he has done is very inspiring to see it all in completed form. This video should be required to be viewed by all us garage guys on You Tube. I have shared this video with all my friends and we have all discussed it amongst ourselves. And then your other video "Garage Makeover - The Hardest Part Is Getting Started" is the next logical step in implementing some of the ideas from this video. Adam your workbench makeover turned out great. Thank you for sharing this great information.

This video is so sophisticated. It's almost like garage philosophy. I've never heard anyone with such clear and precise explanations about the process we men go through in the shop environment. Especially at 8:40 when he explains that you enter your shop, then spend 15 minutes searching for a tool--then repeat the process again the next day. I have two speed squares and both of them have vanished somewhere in my shop, and I've been looking for 2 days now, wasting at least 30 minutes. His point about time wasted searching for tools is so important! What an inspiring video, and how dumb I feel now for not having a place for my speed squares.

This is what I call, "Internet Gold". Great video Adam and Doug. Makes me wish I had a garage to set up like that. My favorite thing is seeing the "One Eye Customs" sticker and then later finding out Doug has one good eye. Also, the sticky note for lent tools is a great idea. Now you won't be able to get away with "borrowing" one of Doug's tools and keeping it. ha

Hinged grinders is my favourite hack. Grinders take up a lot of room (annoyingly at the front of the bench) and the hinge system is a great idea to keep the front of the bench clear and also make cleaning easy. My second fav would be the trailer hitch vices because of the same space-saving reasons (although the grinders win for the added ease of being able to clean under them).

@Daniel G I like that hinged grinder set-up, too. It'll allow me so much extra space.

I liked the "trailer hitch vices" too but I thought the trailer hitches had a little 'wiggle-room' that might let your project move when you work on it. Would that be a problem?

@@cockerjc Mine are similar only I made them so they clamp the inner piece. That works great!
@cockerjc
@cockerjc 2 жыл бұрын
@@td6608 Thanks! I'm interested, but how does it work? I don't know exactly what you are implying. Did you thread tap a side of the hitch receiver to allow a bolt to tighten the 2" "vice hitch" tube into a bind? No, your idea is probably faster. haha
@td6608
@td6608 2 жыл бұрын
@@cockerjc If you imagine the outer piece of trailer hitch tubing six inches long, cut a slit out about a half inch wide the full length then halfway along weld a half inch nut on one side and a bushing that the bolt will fit through on the other side of the slit. Then install the bolt through the bushing into the nut and as you tighten it it will pull the two halves together and clamp the inner piece tightly. I use a 3/4" wrench but I'm thinking if welding a 1/2" x 4" rod across the bolt heads so I won't even need the wrench. I have to look again but I believe I built one like this only with two pieces of tubing (upper and lower) and use one bolt for both. This way I can use either the upper if I want the vise higher or the lower (about 6" down) if I want the vise lower. I'd make a video but I don't have the guts to post anything.

My favorites - Pool vacuum hose, trailer hitch mounts for vises, and clean-up brushes mounted at each tool - idea... as it would reduce the chances of cross contamination of work surfaces and/or waste/trash. While I group my tools, your friend did a nice job of showing an excellent reason to use the foam - a reason that I have yet to hear others mention - a reminder to track down a missing tool, or a note to self, that you loaned it out.

The stainless steel workbench is essentially what commercial kitchens are outfitted with. So check out a kitchen supply store or look for restaurant salvage. If you can catch a retail store being demolished, they will have heavy duty shelving and maybe carts too. Old discarded shopping carts have a ton of potential. Remove the basket but keep the handle and you have a sturdy dolly that could probably hold up anything short of a car engine. It's certainly capable of hauling around heavy bags of concrete and buckets.

The two items that I found to be very creative is the air hose reel and the shop vac, there up off the floor and off the wall and out of the way. The air reel was to best. Using that style hose reel verses a retractable. The cheap retractable reels do not last and the expensive reels are just that...THERE CRAZY EXPENSIVE!! Five years ago for $60 on eBay I bought a 50ft 14 gauge retractable power cord reel and so far I've had no issues with it. I was determined to find a reel that would meet my needs. All of the 12 gauge reels were 30ft which wasn't long enough, most of the 50ft reels were 18 or 16 gauge and there was no way I was going to use a 50ft 18 or 16 gauge power cord on some of my power tools. The current draw from the tool verses the length of the cord and at 50ft of 18 or even 16 gauge that wasn't a option. I also wanted to ask brand is that shop vac with the remote power on the attachment and can you buy the remote power attachment by itself?

Other than all of them. I liked the two layers of foam for the screwdrivers. I have an overabundance of tools. I inherited from my dad, my father in law and people will just give me tools. No where near the amount that Doug has, but. Thanks for this KZfaq gold. Bob

I have lost count of how many shop organisation/hack videos I've watched. This is one of the best ones I've seen!! I'm in the process of overhauling mine and I'll be implementing almost all of these ideas... I just went out to look how I can fit my vac on the ceiling!!!

Oh... and I had to do a "quick" repair on my polytunnel this morning which is right outside the workshop... 20 minutes I spent tripping over stuff trying to find the tools... I definitely have the time lol

Trailer hitch vice mounts, single stainless top bent to cover two other benches, the sides and covers on the SWAG band saw and the tray to catch the trash, repurposed white cabinet for bulk battery tools, large lay-up table. All great ideas that I am certainly going to repurpose in my own garage we are building. Great video.

Having everything on wheels has been our shop standard for many years. It works well. Suggestion: Put the garbage cans on wheels too. Nice shop organization. The amount of time saved is well worth the effort.

Today I had set aside for some clean-up work in the garage. I accidently came across this video and ended up watching the whole thing. There are several of "my favorite" hacks, but the one I am actually going to use today is getting my vacuum up and out of the way, even though my vac is not remote controlled. I do have a floor dust pan and broom, and a bench brush, but Doug just showed me that it's OK to have more than one. The cheap paint brush located at the equipment is a great idea. Thanks for the great video. Now it's time to get off my butt and get busy out into the garage!

They sell remote control outlets, so you can actually turn any shop vac into a remote controlled vacuum if you want :)

My dad taught me to put his tools right back where I found them and to make sure their clean or I'll never use them again. That was a great life lesson a very long time ago that I still practice today.

that remote and the pool hose on the vacuum is pretty cool. Taking it one step further, I have a mate who has smart switches for all his static tools and lighting so its a simple matter of saying "alexa turn on compressor " etc etc

Omgosh those wrench drawers 🤩 We lost my dad a year ago and he was an engineer. The tools are everywhere.my sister and I have a huge task ahead of us, this gives me so many ideas. But we have to collect everything into one spot to even separate them.

Doug, a man of my own heart. So many great details he took care of with the philosophy of not scrapping but repurposing. Although the grinder and vise concepts for keeping the bench open were great, my favorite was the simple paint can shaker using the sawz-all. Great job with the layout table with the removable top. Looking forward to a part two from Doug on Hometown Acres.

Thanks Adam and Doug. I worked in the injection molding business for 13 years. We had 6S and Lean manufacturing. The funny thing is that in the kitchen the perfect 6S silverware drawer is located right next to the kitchen junk drawer.

I think we all found this video by accident, because KZfaq wants us to be clean like this man. I hadn't intended on being lectured on how messy I am, but WOW that vacuum cleaner is the coolest thing ever!!! I'm only 4:49 into the video and had to pause to reflect on just how creative this man is.

I loved the barn hinges to store the grinders out of sight. Grinders are a necessity but not used daily. I also liked the way he utilized the space above his cabinets and garage doors. You never have too much storage space.

Awesome video, awesome shop. I work with a fellow that is as organized if not more. Problem is, It carries over to every aspect of his life. OCD to the max, to the point where as he's talking to you he's brushing lint off of your shoulder. If he happens to stop at your house or shop, as you're talking to him he's picking things off the floor and setting them in the trash, constantly looking around and getting more tense as he eyeballs your messy workbench. It's a running joke, however it is absolutely true, that he drives his wife and family absolutely nuts because it carries over into the house. He has a "better way" for everything, and don't you forget it. It is an absolute awesome trait if you can keep it under control and keep it to yourself. Once you start crossing the line of critiquing your co-workers, it's time for therapy
