Shan I’ve always followed these budgeting videos they are so helpful and relatable! One thing I found really great was comparing breakdown cover on a compare the market thing I paid £22 for this year and £21 last year (and had to call them out) Brands like AA and green flag are really expensive so worth shopping round Also so much cheaper than going through your car insurer for those that do that Worth checking as rhat would save you a lot every month!

Hi Shan. Loved this video, my maternity leave will start from September. You may want to look into critical illness cover now that you are solely self employed as you won't receive any sick pay if the worst was to happen and you did have a long term illness. A payment of £14 per month would suggest its just life insurance at the moment. X

I really appreciate transparent finance videos like this, I'm a bit of a personal finance geek myself! I would just say don't forget that self employed people also pay national insurance as well as income tax :)

Hi Shan, I love your channel! Do you have a hyperjar referral code as I've been thinking about doing it and decided to go for it (I need the old fashioned "money split into envelopes" approach my Nanny used to do!

The nursery funding is nice, even if it's just for a few hours.. I'm in South Africa and you don't get any of daycare paid... 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm so glad to be working from home.. My son's daycare is very close, so it's not much petrol monthly.

Can I ask about mat pay and also getting self employed income. Last time I was on maternity leave (I’m self employed) it said I couldn’t earn anything apart from 10 KIT days. But it seems you’re able to earn normal income each month plus mat pay? I’m hoping I can do this next time as we couldn’t survive on the mat pay alone.

I get the idea of using hyperjar to separate pots but surely you'd be much better off putting any savings into an instant access savings account to generate interest? You could still track "pots" using a spreadsheet.
@HomeWithShan
@HomeWithShan Ай бұрын
I definitely take this on board, my husband uses Monzo and they also have a “pots” feature that you can get interest on! They’re next day withdrawals though so not an instant access account xxx

@helen_blanketsandbooks

This is what I do. I have a savings account and an instant access account, but a spreadsheet for both, so my 'pots' are just managed and tracked on those. I also keep my spreadsheets upto date throughout the month (do it once a week) and track all my spending so I know if I'm going over in a particular area. X

Is hyperjar an actual banking app or does it just draw information from your banks (like snoop?). I so badly want to use it but dont want to miss out on good interest rates from normal banks
@HomeWithShan
@HomeWithShan Ай бұрын
It’s a banking app yeah! I transfer my “leftover” money into this account to divide into my jars. It’s a good point about interest though!

Can I ask what age the funding comes in down south? I’m in Scotland and my son turns 3 in September but doesn’t get any funded childcare until January! I didn’t realise it was so different elsewhere in the UK. Love your budgeting videos 😊

You’re not taking into account your personal tax free allowance though? So it wouldn’t be £600 tax as you haven’t taken off your tax free allowance every month. For the year it’s £12,570 Tax free allowance
