Thanks for the breakdown. This really helped me understand the poem better. I think his references to R&J is him saying we missed the point of his tragedies. If we worship the people we love, rather than being aware of the defects that make us all human, we are doomed to the same fate as Romeo and Juliet.

One of my favorite sonnets that I only knew in Russian translation (a very good translation btw). Until now when I finally red the original and found this wonderful analysis with a lot of historical references that explained many of the “why's” I had.
