Something I just thought of: This is the first time Homura has gotten this far. She has fought Walpurgisnacht before but never got to use the explosion before. She seems genuinely surprised that the explosion didn't work and she gets attacked by those familiars. She doesn't have a plan, no ambush, no weapons for after that explosion. She thought it would work.

“Magical girl anime are boring, shonen is the only anime with action!” Homura: “Hold my entire military arsenal.”

Gotta admit, one of the saddest parts of this is that their hope lies in Homura. So with all the times she's done this, if she falls into despair and turns into a witch, it's over. She needs to muster up her courage and keep going. Because if she doesn't stay alive and turn back time if it gets too hard, they're fucked.

Homura has every rights to snap as hard as she did in Rebellion. I mean, look at what she did here, preparing all that!

The saddest part is how mistreated Homura is in the series and even by the audience themselves. Homura never gets a thank you for her efforts, only a verbal or literal beatdown by everyone around her ever since timeline 1. She has been secretly carrying everyone out of necessity, doing and withstanding things that no regular human could ever hope to achieve, and yet she is always held to such an unfair standard by everyone around her. The only person in Homura’s travels who has never done this was Madoka, so it’s no wonder her attachment to Madoka. People criticize her for being selfish, but Homura is simply being realistic, how can you blame her for selfishness when you ever consider the circumstances she is in? It’s not easy to change the fate of multiple lives and best a LITERAL PLANETARY THREAT (Walpurgisnacht would have stopped the planet from spinning once its main body reached the gears on top, it is slowly spinning ever so slowly to the top of its gears). Oh and who is willing to throw her life away for all of eternity in hell so that the incubators cannot get an upper hand on Madoka and control her in rebellion? Homura, even though Madoka left her alone to go save everyone in the entire multiverse. Who is the one that subjugated the entire Kyubey race so that they would hopefully never interfere again with magical girls? Homura. Homura’s back should be broken at this point from the amount of carrying. You never see people hold Kyoko, Sayaka, or Mami to the same standards as Homura. I just went on a tangent rant about how stupid people are.

When you try to beat a really difficult boss and you are level 3 but really good at dodging

This is hauntingly sobering when you consider that Homura's magical ability has nothing to do with guns, only with time manipulation. That means all those tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of pounds of explosive material and weapons arms weren't just made from nothing like Mami's guns were- they were individually tracked down and gathered, one after the other, by one little girl. How many hundreds of repetitions did it take to find them all, every time making a new doomed timeline? How many thousands of hours did she spend looking for where to get them from, and how many failed attempts finding the most effective way to arrange them? It's these thoughts which give this fight such emotional power. As every new cannon or battleship shows up, it's clear this isn't something she's been trying to finish for just months, or even years- she's likely been trapped in this single month for decades. This isn't just a girl fighting some crazy monster- this is a girl trying to fight against a prison of time and responsibility that stops her from even being able to have a future.

Here's a thought: Every time she jumped, she returned to her original body in the hospital bed, and never aged a day despite the fact that mentally she's at least in her early twenties, meaning the effects of her actions do not carry over as she turns back time. That means she couldn't have gradually accumulated the weapons over eight years. Every single jump back she had to re-gather all these weapons from scratch for use in another (probably futile) attempt to defeat the Walpurgisnacht. If she lost and had to reset, she would then have to gather these bombs and artillery pieces all over again, AND THEN position them all in one place for when the Walpurgisnacht arrived at her predictable ground zero.

Homura repeating trauma over and over again, yet still having the mental fortitude to keep fighting is a testament to how much she truly loved Madoka. Knowing that in each timeline she resets, the one person she loves the most, is further drifting apart, is truly heartbreaking. Hope and despair are entangled in a never ending cycle, and no one knows this better than Homura.

Remember when Homura used to get exhausted after hitting a barrel with a golf club? Yeah.

Consider the timelines where she stole all those weapons. Some JSDF security guard has to call in his boss. "Sir? All the bazookas are gone." "What do you mean gone?" "I mean gone, sir. There are no bazookas in the armory." "Well where did they go?" "No idea, sir." "So the bazookas just disappeared?" "That's what the tapes show, sir." (both men turn pale as they realize that the absolute /best/ ending for this day involves getting fired.)

So... Is no one gonna mention how Walpurgis is supposed to be a combination of thousands of witches who used to be magical girls, and her design is based of a Jester, someone who is made to be treated like a fool, symbolizing how all the innocent girls were made into fools by Kyubey? No? Just me? Alright.

I never thought in a million years I would end up watching a show like this. I'm a grown ass man and I'm way too old to be reading about school age dramas about girls getting magical powers. Yet, here I am, having completed the series, and I gotta say, that was some INSANE levels of kino. I was floored repeatedly by plot twists and the time loop gimmick in this series is so good, it absolutely redefines the entire series upon rewatch, I can't believe I thought Homura was the villain at first. 9/10, and I only docked 1 point because how am I supposed to tell my friends and family about this without looking like a massive weirdo???

It’s funny to think about how Homura is kind of like a speed runner trying to optimize her run every time just a little bit. Even though that truck to the face did basically nothing she was just like “might as well get in some chip damage while running to the cannons.”

Personally I find that image of Homura at 3:55 to be one of the saddest parts of the show. Here we see Homura hurt, broken, weak and finally despairing at her inability to defeat Walpurgisnacht and save Madoka. It just shows that underneath her mask of competence and cold indifference she is at the core of her character, simply a scared little girl who just wants to save her friend and is now finding herself unable to no matter how hard she tries. Being Homura is suffering.

She was hailed by christians, and battled against witchcraft. Walpurgisnacht’s nature is helplessness, she’s crying, not laughing and she symbolises the fool who continuously spins in circles, which is probably also a reference to witchcraft. She’s also a combination of other witches too. It’s important to remember that she’s definitely existed for centuries, and wonders around the world aimlessly and doesn’t have a boundary. Walpurgisnacht is the stage constructing witch, shown by her minions. Her main ones, however, are the ones that dance around and attack homura. Notably, it’s actually unknown whether walpurgis was one person, or a combination of magical girls. Infact, she may be a combination of the witches ridiculed by Saint Walpurga, or started off as one of the witch’s ridiculed. Infact, walpurgis may be the witch that caused other witches to be called witches. Possibly, she could’ve witched out while being executed at an event and other witches being executed followed suit. In terms of wishes, I think walpurgis’ wish(s) would’ve been related to witchcraft, possibly wishing for abilities in witchcraft or to be accepted. But I had a thought. The witchcraft users met kyubey before being executed. Kyubey promised them all that he would save them and prove to the people the power of witchcraft. Of course, this is a way of kyubey getting energy, The girls agreed, and during the execution kyubey made the contract with them and because of the conditions of the contract they automatically witched out, but rather so they combined together into one powerful witch.Walpurgis Naught herself is the wish, the creation of the witch. The dancers are each of the individual girls and the other stagecraft things would’ve appeared around or near the execution and walpurgis used it for her minions. Walpurgis is crying probably because this isn’t what she truely wanted and they wished they had just died. Infact, truely, all Walpurgis wanted was to be accepted.

I think what's interesting about the Walpurgisnacht is that, while other witches embody their own despair, the Walpurgisnacht seems to embody Homura's. Octavia embodies Sayaka's unrequited love by composing a song her lover will never hear, Candeloro embodies Mami's loneliness by ensnaring people and never letting them leave her, Ophelia Kyoko's feeling of abandonment and Charlotte Nagisa's tenacity. But the Walpurgisnatch, who embodies helplessness? With every blow that bounces harmlessly off it you can just feel that helplessness, the way Homura went through all that planning and preparation just for it to be blown out of the water, the way she says "I have to do something" before being tossed aside like a ragdoll. She's just as helpless before the witch as the witch is before its nature. In a way, the Walpurgisnatch was Homura's witch before Homulilly was.

She never lost hope because she genuinely thought her time travelling shenanigans were improving her chances of saving Madoka. After finding out that the very actions she believed were providing safety were actually digging Madoka’s grave (and her own) by making Madoka a brighter target for the Incubators, it’s no surprise this is where she nearly snapped.

Homura, using *THOUSANDS* of bombs and rocket launchers, can't even scratch Walpurgisnacht, but Madoka can take her down with one hit? Yes I get Madoka's supposed to be strong from the time loops, but that much power difference is crazy

This scene right here will always have a weird place in my heart. I was hospitalized for an eating disorder at 8 years old and at the time I was just getting into anime. This was the second one I ever watched, but immediately took a liking to it because of how I could relate to the characters (I think this show represents very well what it's like to be a young girl who's struggling with mental health, especially as I reflect on it now). Long story short, my therapist had me describe the negative thoughts in my head as if they were a separate person, giving them a new name and acting like the thoughts were just another bully that I could deal with. One of my assignments was to draw/visualize what this separate person would look like if they were actually living. I can't help but think of those thoughts looking and acting like this witch even now. Really, it's weird looking at this scene and realizing how many stupid metaphors I could make about it relating to my childhood and current struggles with mental health. It's silly, but honestly this show means so much to me and it will always be my favorite.

By the way, I've read lots of arguments (and watched videos) about Homura's actions, the background of the witches, etc, but I've never seen the importance of INFORMATION mentioned explicitly (though people dance around it sometimes). Remember the Incubators normally have all the advantages over these naive girls. They have pan-universal knowledge of how wishes operate on other planets, they have thousands of years of human history to draw upon (Homie isn't the first girl to time travel or to turn against them) and probably the wisdom of seeing how the collective wishes of overall a few million girls/young women (some are older than others, some are arguably still children, but NONE are experienced adults) turn out. Homura doesn't stand a chance against that, right? Well...she retains knowledge of the 'previous timeline' and every other timeline she's been in, while the Incubators DO NOT. That's how she's able to learn their secrets (including that they are absolute utilitarian assholes), and keep some of her own. Homura's efforts -she apparently manages to keep Madoka from becoming a magical girl for longer periods of time - finally lead to the Incubators downfall, because this timeline Madoka waits long enough (and sees enough of the horrors of being a Magical Girl) that she asks all the right questions to enable her to formulate a fully informed wish. I think the reason Kyubey doesn't downright lie to her is he UNDERESTIMATES the Magical Girls. After all, these 'energy cattle' have never successfully rebelled before and their wishes are so predictable. I think the Incubators in "science fiction' terms would be a Near Godlike race of beings with at least partly a collective consciousness (spare bodies) and advanced Quantum technologies. But that's the point: NEAR Godlike, and they don't retain information across various universes and timelines.

This is probably my favorite scene in the whole show! The music, the animation, and the conclusion; seriously, was I the only one who actually for once thought she was really going to die?

The best personal analogy that I can come up with for how mentally exhausting this fight was for Homura is this: It's like fighting a very hard boss in a video game, except... the last time you could save was months prior (aka when Homura woke up on the hospital bed). So every time you want to try and fight that boss again, you have to keep on going through basically the entire game, recollect ALL your weapons in order to even have a chance of getting to fight the boss again. And if you die/are close to death, you have to reset all the way to the beginning and do it all over again. Now, to most people, this would be pretty frustrating, right? Most people would just give up and quit. Even some of the most stubborn of people might even take a break after a few tries before coming back to try again, right? Now, imagine that if you stop playing or quit the game, you die in real life. THAT'S how it was like for Homura. She couldn't even take a break if she wanted to, because doing so would mean turning into a witch. The moment she made her wish, she inadvertently set herself up to fight Walpurgisnacht for eternity, until Walpurgisnacht somehow dies (which is nearly impossible without Madoka's help, but even then, Madoka herself is put in danger every time this happens due to how much power she has). That's how much mental fortitude Homura had to acquire to even last this long. And even then, in the final cycle before the final episode of the series, Homura is about ready to give up. This is seriously a lot for someone who's supposed to be 13 years old.

This is the scene that really solidified Homura as a top tier fighter in my eyes. She controlled every moment of that fight until Walpurgisnacht used it's OP plz nerf damage immunity to no sell her hits. The first part of that fight was one long "just as planned" and against anything without the durability of the stage setting witch, she would have been victorious.

After playing MagiReco, I realized that Homura never really targeted the cog wheel on Walpurgisnacht, she simply attacked the body, which explains why none of her attacks didn't really kill her

Can we appreciate how Walpurgisnacht night design is magnificent and beautiful while being dreadful and unsettling at the same time.

The worst part about this that no one seems to talk about is that she literally could never win, because, just as all the timelines were created with the porpuse of saving madoka, which gave her karmic destiny, they were also all created with the porpuse of defeating Walpurgisnacht, giving it karmic destiny, so no matter how strong homura got, she could never ever win

The build up, music, animation, the theme(s), nuance of homura's character make this episode, this fight scene and this anime so god damn good.

It absolutely mortifies me to think about the kind of girl Walpurgisnacht could have been before she started fusing with other witches. By the look of her silhouette at the end of the series, she was just another 'Magical Girl' but what could possibly break someone into turning into something like this...

I'm so happy knowing Walpurgis is coming back in Magia Record, just wanna see a huge magical girls battle vs this witch.

Homuras combat ability always amazes me. She could likely 1v1 any other Magical girl with ease outside of Mami (which could go either way imo) or Madoka in some of the timelines. People say shes only good because of her time stop but she clearly fights extremely well. That combined with her mental fortitude, she's one scary fucking beast.

Good gods, I remember being so in awe of the fight scene when I first watched Madoka Magica, how everything at the beginning was perfectly set up, and then how it all began to crumble towards the end. I was in tears for the ending, though to be fair, I had been crying for all of the previous episode and then episodes 11 and 12 made it worse. ... it probably didn't help that I binged the entire series in one day.
