Honda Accord O2 Sensors (upstream and downstream)

This was a tough video to make! This video was 26 (no joke) videos from my phone that I did my best to shrink down to what you see. I started to notice a sound while driving like my car was running out of gas, and then I got a check engine light. Turns out my 02 Sensor at my exhaust manifold was bad, but I ended up replacing both.
P0135 was the original code, but I fixed it like it was P0141. Many lessons learned on this project. Because I had recently (the month before) replaced my catalytic converter, without thinking I replaced the 02 sensor in my cat. Oops. I finally figured out what was going on and successfully replaced both sensors. Here's what you see at the 11:40 minute mark:
P0135: Bank 1 Sensor 1: upstream/ pre-catalyst (catalytic) at exhaust manifold/ front
P0141: Bank 1 Sensor 2: downstream/ after catalytic/ rear. By "after" it's meant "in" or "behind" the cat.
I bought my Denso 02 Sensor - same one for the front and the rear location, at Advanced. Part #: 234-4321.

Well done. I like the 'by the ways' with figuring it all out. I've taken out a few extra screws and bolts along the way myself, so I appreciate the honesty! Learning something along the way doesn't cost anything and not paying someone else to do it... priceless!

This is similar to how my "auto mechanic" tutorials would go. I'd demonstrate a lot of what-not-to-do and "learn from my mistakes" scenarios. I am grateful for your style of videos. Thank you. Ps~ practice makes perfect. 😁👍

Great video. You could have sprayed some penetrating oil on those bolts to make the job easier and maybe avoid a stripped bolt. A tip is to disconnect the sensor wires first before you remove the sensor. Take your new sensor and compare the plugs to make sure they will fit. That way you know it will fit before you go thru all that work. Also, to make sure the wires are long enough to reach. So make sure of both those things, then remove the sensor itself. Also, and this is very important, use only OEM sensors. For your Honda you should be using Denso. For Fords, use Motorcraft. GMs, use AC Delco, and so on and so forth.

Thanks. I did buy Denso in the end. Also, I unloaded penetrating oil on that manifold sensor, and it did nothing. 100% on disconnecting wires before turning/removing. I figured that out after the first time:)

Great video you did a good job explaining what to do and what not to do good job very helpful it was also very entertaining I couldn't help but laugh only because I seen myself doing the same thing's as you did and I'm sure there are other's as well that have done almost if not all of what you did replacing the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors (KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK) your very down to earth the good neighbor next door.

The white piece and rubber you pulled out of the wiring harness in the car actually belongs to the old o2 sensor connector, it gets stuck in there after a long time. Which is why after you took it out, the o2 sensor with the white piece in tact could plug in and work now. Happened to me too.

I hate it when the previous mechanic makes things difficult. Anti seize comes with the dang thing. Lol. People don't tend to think of the next guy unfortunately. At least you got it out. It's ridiculous what they charge to replace o2 sensors

The white stuff on your o2 sensors (old) is contamination. Either silicon or antifreeze. I think coolant. Look it up because it means your head gasket is blown if coolant. Probably what killed your cadiltic converter. Looks like it hasn't been happening long so you can still salvage it. Complete engine rebuild if left too long. Also check your oil and make sure it's not watering it down.

@DanielKeery Good tip for sure! We sold the car, but another video I'm working on is the replacement of the exhaust manifold gasket. One of the studs in the block broke from being too old, and you could hear the exhaust leak. Got it all fixed after some "holy cow" moments. Maybe that's where the contamination was coming from. Sold it VERY cheap so hopefully if the problem persisted they got it fixed. Thanks again for the tips!

@@durk1980messed up you sold the car in taht condition leaving the people with unnecessary issues being a mechanic. Mechanic tend to be not for the people just for themselves.

I am running into the same problem with the white plastic insert on my 234-4621 sensor preventing the plug from going together. Did you say that you took the white plastic and rubber gasket out of the connector to make your connection work?

@Russell ONeal, yes. You can put the rubber gasket and white insert back in if you need. Just be gentle removing and it unclips basically. If it doesn't fit, and you've obviously tried it before with the white insert first, then you know you have another issue with the sensor wiring from the car to the piece you have. You'd think it would be universal, but I'd have to see it to know what's going on. Once you remove the insert/gasket, you have a male plug. If the piece coming from the car looks like a female end, you're good. If it's male also, then leave the insert/gasket on obviously. Good luck!

great video, thanks. I need to replace this on my 2005 accord and am wondering if tapping the arm of the wrench being used with a hammer (Simulating a hand impact tool due to the location and configuration of the Sensor.) Would have broken it loose.

Of course it might, but every “frozen” sensor or nut or bolt is different. More leverage usually wins the day over more force. A 20 breaker bar and a baby could crack a crankshaft bolt loose. 4” wrench and the Hulk ain’t touching the same one. Hitting it just right, may do the trick. If it’s going to be thrown away (sensor), cut it off, and use a standard socket to remove. The open socket made for O2 sensors can’t handle high amounts of torque in my opinion. They’re perfect for putting one on, but lack in removing.

@@durk1980 A little WD40 or Liquid Wrench wouldn't hurt either. Just allow it to dry and wipe up excess before starting the car.

I'm also a backyard mechanic but one thing that you can do to improve your skills is to invest in open end wreches. They would help in taking off sensors.

@@durk1980 This is the truth for most DIYers. For whatever reason, folks who go out and buy tools just to have them never seem to use them. However, those of us who purchase tools as needed get comfortable with them and then USE them. But this means that you almost always have to buy a tool or several of them with each repair until you have your own fairly complete, small shop. Best of luck. All of us start somewhere, and many do not go as far as you have because supposedly simple jobs like this turn into ongoing nightmares and eventually scare them off. Stick with it! You are off to a good start. I watch KZfaq videos quite a bit before I do anything new to me. It really helps me to get a grip on what I need to have on hand and what will be involved, including potential issues. You got this, durk.

Thanks @Holton 345. I started this channel because like everyone, I watch YT to learn how to do something - but I'd always come up feeling short. Hopefully I go into enough depth and cover my mistakes well enough to where other people learn how to successfully do what they're searching for. Since posting this, my tool collection has grown significantly. It really does take time to acquire tools over a long period of time, but with each new tool there's new capabilities, and confidence. I'm cleaning to carbon off the intake valves of my son's Mini Cooper this weekend with a walnut shell blast. Can't wait to post that one. I have tons of videos sitting - waiting to be edited so I can upload. I certainly am better now at getting all my ducks in a row before I start a job. Thanks for the support!

For mine yes. Go to 15:40 and pay attention to the rest of the video. It’s explained. Like I said, mine were the same.

Denso, and yes. I've sold this car since, but up until that point they worked great. Bought them at Advance; good reviews on the product.

I believe Honda sources it's O2 sensors through Bosch or Denso depending on the year. Both are good quality.

What size wrench did you use?

22mm crows foot. Harbor Freight sells a set. Just be aware that if there’s 10 in a set or something, it will skip sizes. Make sure yours has the 22. Doesn’t hurt to get a big set of crows foot sockets.

I hear you. I had to google it. If it's out there, it should be coming up on a search. Try the exact part number, the model, combos, etc. Don't hesitate calling NAPA, Advance, O'Reilly, etc. You can also try a local parts store. Someone will know. Good luck!

Was that KZfaq guy bullett solano who told you about the long pliers to pinch the oxygen sensor to remove it, im going to harbor freight and buy me a cheap pair for my 2000 4 cy accord sensor.

Could’ve been. Looked him up and it didn’t ring a bell, but that was a long time ago that I saw that video! You can’t go wrong with a long pair of pliers, especially at Harbor Freight. There are multiple different kinds, feel free to get ones that will fit in different angles and tight spaces; you’ll be amazed at how often they come in handy. Good luck!
