For 2023, Honda has thankfully added a gear indicator. I really wish they would have put it in the dash from the very beginning with the 2019, as I'm often trying to shift into an imaginary 7th gear when I'm on the freeway.

@@VinayKumar-zb9mc I taught myself to ride my stepfather's Yamaha 750 street bike in 1985. Yeah, I figured out what the clutch was for pretty fast! LMAO And I've been riding bikes ever since. I own a Ducati M696 currently. Lovely little bike that makes a great noise--and is fast enough for this old girl these days. 😘

Very odd. Maybe they suppose that 125cc are for beginners and gear indicator would make sense. But 300cc is most of the time an option for first riders too.

And from what I have seen the CB500R and CB650R both have gear indicators. The new CRF300L has a display that looks like it was pulled from the CB line and it has a gear indicator

Dont need it but sometimes it's nice to have it. With the 300R, for 5th and 6th it's usefull. Hard to know if.you got one more gear to go when you are pushing hard. I find my self searching for a.up.shift thinking Im in 5th but nope, Im in 6th already. Like I said, dont need it but it's so easy to add, cost little money to buy

We have been ridding for 100 years or more with no gear indicators, i have sofar never had one. BUT, i wouldn't mind having one for 1'st & 6.. Her's why..... I don't want to start out in 2nd and stall at an intersection! I don't want to ride around in 5th (wasting fuel) when I should be in 6 .

Just brought one of these - thanks, your review (and others) being really useful in helping me decide :) Like you, I was also "downsizing" for exactly the reasons you gave. My previous bikes have included a CB1100EX which I Ioved. But, it was simply too nice and I became obsessed with weather forecasts... I already love the little CB. It does everything so well and without all that big bike fuss. You really don't need much more than 30bhp on these roads these days in blighty. The CB rewards good planning and appropriate gearbox stirring with a surprising turn of speed on the B roads. The manners in town are impeccable too - who said bikes with FI have fuelling issues at low speed? The only modification so far has been to shorten the rear fender strut (surprisingly easy) which improves the look significantly whilst otherwise keeping it looking standard. Regarding the thorny issue of GPI - or rather lack of; yes it's penny pinching especially as many people will be looking at the CB300R as their first step-up A2 bike. But the visual clues are there as you quite rightly point out. 6th gear giving 5000rpm at 50mph, 6000 rpm at 60mph etc. But also, 4th gear gives 4000rpm at 30mph which is another useful "spot" reading. Thanks for the comments and the great review of the CB300R on your website, that really sums up my feelings and I agree that getting used to higher rpm after a bigger bike does take a little while :) Your link to the 'Sports Mopeds' takes me back! I lusted after the Fizzy that one of my friends had. Even the Puch Maxi, although not 'sports' in the slightest, seemed like an amazing bike compared to my £5.00 Mobylette moped. I made my own head gaskets for that Mobylette out of cardboard and silver foil, oh those were the days. How we didn't all kill ourselves being able to ride up to 250cc on L plates (indefinitely) and the bike test was a hoot. Youngsters won't believe it, but no training required, you just turned up for your appointment and the examiner was on foot, not on a bike. I think they looked at you, asked how long you had been riding and figured that if you had survived so far, then you were safe to ride a bigger bike. The cold and wet weather we've had recently hasn't allowed me to get out for a bit, but the CB300R is taxed, insured and ready to go as soon as we get some of those cold, dry and clear days :)

Thanks for uploading this. Quite a few other reviews are positive all the time, probably because Honda is loaning the bikes to people doing the reviews, and they'd stop loaning them if they were negative. Albeit this isn't a negative review, but at least it's pointing out a flaw. I'd still choose the CB300R though, very light, good handling, good fuel economy, Honda's reliability record, and it's a very good looking bike, I think it beats it's competition for looks.

I've had a BMW K75c with a gear indicator; loved it! I have a BMW R1150R (no gear indicator), and sometimes I (at highway speeds) wonder if I'm in 6th gear, and I'll go for it, sometimes... Then I'll realize I'm already in 6th, etc. ... So I'll look at my speedo & tach, and if I'm doing 3500 or so at 70 mph, I'll say I'm in 6th gear, but the temptation to go into that imaginary 6th gear( even though I'm already in it) exists...

Excellent video. I would go to even higher gears at low speed. You can negotiate roundabouts in third provided you are not expecting rapid acceleration out of it. The only time you strain the engine is when you attempt full or near full throttle in a gear that is too high. Otherwise a higher gear is nearly always better as it cuts down on the annoying over-high rev sound, unless of course you fancy the occasional buzz of full acceleration. Great bike by the way.

I refuse to take my eyes off the road to view a gear indicator. I don’t need one in a car, why would I need one on a bike? A large, visible tach and speedo are all I need to manage my gearshifts. Even there, my ear was all i ever needed on my dirt bikes...

I think it is not needed. I got my bike in last month and I am fine without gpi Just by looking at the speed and engine sound one should be able to identify the gear position I do it the same way My previous bike which I rode for 15 years was without gpi but I never faced any problem. Once you ride enough you start to feel that the gpi is actually not needed

Had about 12 different bikes over the years and I've never had a gear indicator. Never had one in a car either. I know you have the stick but you never really have to look. I don't really get the need for one.

Quick answer: no. Reason: no bike had them in the old days, so you can't NEED them. I remember in the early 90s I had a Suzuki DR250SH in Tokyo. I used to commute across the city, short-shifting. It was months before I realised I had 6 gears. I'd hit top but never counted.

I don't have any rider info whatsoever on my bike cuz the clocks got wrecked in a theft attempt. I could get 2nd hand clocks but it doesn't bother me at all. I do use the speedo on my phone, however, but only to not fall foul of the law. Gear indicator bit pointless from my pov. Yeah cb3r great bike I'd go for comfort over speed hence inazuma best A2 cheapie.

The newer models from 2022 i think have a gear indicator. I don't think it's abs. necessary to have one, and you can get used to anything given time, same with a rev counter, but IMHO and given the choice i would rather have these things than not

It's usually better to have something that not but really the revs tell you if you need to change gear. If the bikes pulling ok I don't know if it matters which gear you're in. I suppose you might forget you are already in 6th if it's revving high but by then you will be going way too fast 😄 All you probably need is a neutral light really

I don't need to know what intermediate gear I'm in, but I do want confirmation I'm in top. I don't want to have to work it out (in Km it's not the simple MPH relationship). That attempt to change into 7th when on highways is unnecessary.

I would have thought for a beginner that you would want the indicator to avoid accidently going into neutral or first when you meant to only go down to second?

It's actually not all that easy to accidentally select neutral, so it's not really an issue. And of course, you do have the neutral indicator light. Many of us rode do decades without a gear position indicator, so it's a nice to have rather than an essential item. Also, practice makes perfect. I had two rides the other days covering some 70 miles and I didn't try to select a non-existent 7th gear once :)

I do that or I just look at my rpms. I've had a 2018 cb300f for almost two years now. I have 8000 miles on it. It's not necessary to see what gear you're in.

Hi Gary, nice video, I'm like you, I can't see the need for a gear indicator, the only time it maybe useful is to confirm you are in top gear but as you say 1,000 rpm per 10 mph makes it easy to work out when you are in top. Otherwise you pick whichever gear is suitable for the speed and road conditions you are running on, it doesn't matter which gear you are in. I must say that the engine note on yours sounds far crisper than mine, mine has now covered 3500 miles since buying last October - I see yours is on about 350? Are you experiencing the engine noise yet that creeps in around 5000 rpm - 7000 rpm? The concensus of opinion seems to be the timing chain/tensioner. Overall though the bike suits my needs and get lots of pleasure from my rides out on it. All the best.

Thanks for the comments Jonathan. I've done about 650 miles now and had the first service at 450 miles. The engine sound is as recorded on the GpPro Hero 7 Black on a chest mount so that might affect how it sounds. I ride with foam earplugs and that deadens the sound anyway. I do hear the 'rattle' that others have heard, but it's no worse than my previous bike which was a big BMW R1200GS and that sounded like a bag of nails if I didn't have the earplugs in. I'm not worried about it, it's under warranty and the engine is fairly low stressed so I think it will all be OK. Shame the weather is so poor at the moment, I don't want to ride in the rain and get the bike dirty :)

Hi Jonathan i have 2850 on mine and have noticed the engine noise as exactly as you state I have also noticed a lot of chain noise recently even though the chain tension is correct and the chain cleaned and lubed regularly. Overall i love the bike suits me fine great in the city and adequate on faster A roads and motorways are no problem. PS have you tried to remove the front sprocket cover yet? I have removed the two bolts but can not work out what is holding it in place and did not want to force it regards

Sorry this is a really dumb question. On my 2019 cb300r I have to click down on the Shifter for the gear to go up. And I have to click up on the shift for me to go down. Is that normal? Because I know with other hiejs it's the other way around?

I suspect that your gear change linkage is not connected correctly. Did you buy your bike from somebody else? Bike racers like the gear change to select a higher gear by passing down as it's easier to do when leaned over hard to the left. It should be pretty easy to change it back to normal by taking off the linkage and reassembling it. There is a Facebook page for the CB300R, it might be worth asking there and posting a picture of your gear change linkage.

The CB300R DOES NOT have an indicator that tells you what gear you are in. It has a light that comes on when you reach a certain rpm to remind you yo change up a gear. You can alter the setting for this light so that it comes on at the rpm you want.

Bought a CB300R new in July 2020. I must have the only engine of it's type with a faulty water pump seal leaking from new in Australia and not 1 single seal in the country for a reasonably timed warranty replacement. I have been promised a minimum of 6 weeks from the time the fault was discovered until maybe a ship will get a new seal into the country. Oh and for the 1st week nothing was done; no job card made up; no seal ordered. And if for some reason the seal is not on that ship or the ship does not arrive on time no idea what is supposed to happen. So bike sitting unrideable {safely} and nothing will get done like say putting a 10 cent sized seal on a plane to get one into the country. I cannot get over the fact there is not one single seal after who knows how many bikes with this engine type must have been sold here on anything from various 250's to CBR300R & CB300F with an engine reportedly designed to be a multi use engine world wide to aid in such things as easy parts supply due to wide use. For me the bike went from being a welcome addition to something I am sorry I bought in one week leaving me wishing I had bought any one of the several other bikes I had shortlisted for my purposes.

Gaskets are an easy fix, you don't need the manufactures item. I would get back onto your dealer and get them to make up a gasket from scratch. Of course, it might not be a simple gasket as you describe it as a seal but any competent mechanic should be able to fix this until the proper item arrives. This shouldn't affect your warranty if the dealer makes the temporary repair. I used to make head gaskets out of cardboard and silver foil when I was a youngster with no money. How about contacting Honda Australia, and tell them how the dealer has let you down. www.honda.com.au/en As for waiting for a ship, that's just ridiculous.

@@RuytonXI It is not the gasket that is leaking. It is the shaft seal. Only the manufacturer can make them. They have the necessary gaskets in stock. Turns out the same part number seal is used by the twin cylinder CB500X also. I have also been informed both of these engine types which have this same seal have been having seal leaks since as far back as 2017 and dealerships are just repairing the ones that leak. No permanent fix to stop it happening has yet been done at the manufacture level. That information comes from a dealership.

A lot of riders managed for many decades without a gear position indicator so it's not essential. A motorbike is easy as you only have to go up or down rather than trying to get a gear lever in one of 4, 5 or 6 places like you have to do in a car. Just a case of practice really, but good luck on those crazy roads :)

@@RuytonXI Don't get me wrong. The majority of the bikes I ride don't come with any gear indicators. Its just that while testing the CB300R in Indian traffic it was always a guess as to which gear she was in especially in the lower gears. She was happy revving up and the shifts were intuitive. But in traffic where a lot of shifting happens it was common to drop her into first and getting a nasty jerk when you least expect it.

@@vivek1393 I take your point, I still try to change up into a non-existent 7th gear every now and then :) My last bike, the BMW R1200GS had a gear indicator but once it seemed to get out of sync and stopped showing any gear. Problem was it wouldn't start unless it was in neutral and the bike didn't know that it was! There is an easy fit gear indicator that plugs into the diagnostic port under the seat, I've seen KZfaq videos of this being fitted and calibrated, I did think about getting one but I don't think I'll bother.

He's talking because he is giving (good) information. I suggest you wear ear plugs permanently if you don't want to listen to useful info and you could even put a blindfold on while you are reading too. That would save you the trouble of having to read.
