Disclaimer: this is the "low buck, work with what you have" approach. How/what would you do differently? FYI: This repair resulted in a good, leak free repair. I installed these deals back in May and they show no signs of leaking after one summer of riding. 😃

I love the low budget yet functional quality vibe. I am in the middle of the same job and I'm spending a day bead blasting, polishing or painting all the parts involved. I get that other people may not have the time or have realized nature will win anyway. Fix them and ride them. Cheers

Thanks for the tutorial, about to take my '79 750 out of winter hibernation and replacing the fork seals is on the to-do list before taking her out. You make it look easy, appreciate the show.

Great stuff Mike, your nephew is a natural. When I swapped out the seals recently on a Cb500 four I used a section of 2" pvc over the shock tube and gently persuaded them into place by tapping the pvc with a dead blow hammer, hey when you're cheap and it works, I'll take that win.

That's a fantastic idea! I'm sure some heat from a heat gun would also go a long way in helping get these suckers out.

Great video Mike. Excellent instruction! The pillars are at work here, lol. One day I hope I can upgrade my frontend suspension with some progressive springs and new oil. On that day I'll come back to this vid for the basics. Cheers buddy.

Subbed. We need to take apart our XR 75 that my dad owned when he was young, but we couldn’t find any videos on the XR 75 fork replacement, so we found a similar old motorcycle repair and this worked. We did have to smash our front forks against the ground so they came out, but it worked anyway! Amazing channel, keep up the good content! (We might need these videos for or other repairs)

Just a few observations. First, it's generally a good idea to go over the fork stanchions with 0000 grade or finer steel wool to smooth out and polish any minor imperfections in the travel / sealing area of the forks. This will greatly reduce the odds of having a premature seal failure, and reduce any stiction that may hamper their performance. Second, if you're going through the trouble of completely dismantling the forks it's generally a good idea to inspect and replace the bushings. Chances are a 40 plus year old bike will have worn bushings. They're relatively inexpensive,, and new bushings can make a night and day difference in handling. Third, it was a very bad idea to use any power tool to tighten the triple tree clamps. The tubes are easy to distort, and even the slightest out of roundness can lead to increased stiction or seal failure.

Ahhhh an east coaster! (I remember a time when I used to have a few pints at what used to be the Seahorse Tavern)... That said, your videos are great! Clear, concise and funny too! I'm about to embark on a fork seal replacement on my 1980 Honda 400 CMT. I'll try to follow all the guidelines and do the best I can with the tools I have. Thanks for the great videos! I'm a fan Cyril Montreal, Qc.

One thing to look out for. At 6:57 when tightening up the fork clamp, there should be a 'D' washer in the gap you see, which prevents the fork yoke from cracking when tightening the bolt. I found this out only last night when dismantling my 1971 CB750 as it was cracked by a previous installer!!
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right! The video I'm editing right now explains exactly that. The old green bike in this video didn't have them when I got it and I had no idea that they were even missing.

@@Mike_Barker Yeah I only found out as I posted a pic of the cracked header on a SOHC forum and someone said check the washer! I actually had the washer installed but it should be a set thickness (2.32mm / 0.091inch if it helps). But nice video, as Im taking off the forks tonight myself!

Can you clarify? Are you talking about where the forks mount at the top triple? I'm looking at the diagram and don't see any sort of washer. I have a K8.

Hi. When you said ‘make sure you put the seals in in the right orientation’ (paraphrase) you didn’t actually show what orientation was correct. It is literally the only thing stopping my project right now as I want to do it properly.

Am I the only one who's unable to change my fork oil seals because the stupid fucking butter like allen bolt on the bottom is completely fucked and i can't unscrew it with anything. So now I'm just riding around on my cb200 with a very soft front damping.
@Mike_Barker
@Mike_Barker 4 жыл бұрын
UGH! That's brutal. If you have access to a welder or you're VERY good with an "easy-out" you should be able to remove the bolt... it would suck to have to pay a shop to remove it, but they would have the tools to get the job done.
