In this video, I am looking at Honda's CBR1100XX Blackbird (Super Blackbird in Europe). In this 6th "Blast from the Past" video, I am opening my old photo album and looking at Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird. Honda's mighty Blackbird combined a liquid-cooled, 1137cc, 16-valve motor, 6-speed transmission and slippery aerodynamics to post a 178.6mph top speed during testing. It held the title of "world's fastest production motorcycle" for 1997-1998 until Suzuki's Hayabusa appeared. What was the CBR1100XX like to ride? Let's take a look and find out together!

Thank you son for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride the Blackbird that day and go really fast in a straight line with no traffic on the highway. It was AWESOME! Still don't know why you've not let me ride the Hayabusa! 🤔. Dad

Hello there! I've bought mine in 2016 a 1997 model, 47k kilometers then. First bike, but I live in rural France, so It was easy to accommodate. 110.000 kms now, still got the original headlight bulbs. I did the Alps, Autobahn in Germany, even got to Transylvania. Oil, filters, normal maintenance. This thing is bulletproof.

Also liked those comments from ANOTHER 78 year old ( like me ) your dad ! Lucky you having him for a father . I currently have and LOVE my TWO Blackbirds . I’ve actually owned FOUR of them over the years including a brand new 1999 . Great reliable fast bikes all of them . I tell others that I’m only 78 years old . Maybe when I get older I might get a Harley ( joking ! ) . Still have the “need for speed “ like Pops Prestidge !! 😀

Great review on the XX although I disagree on the lower RPM power issue discussed . I think both of my 97 Blackbirds have awesome power from right off the bottom . Great confidence building comfortable mature sport bikes even suitable for two up riding ( especially so ) and extremely reliable . By the way one of the major magazines ran a 10.2 Quarter when the Blackbird was first released making it the new Fastest Production Bike available at the time . Even the 1300 cc Busa only ran a10.3 when new . Jaws Motorcycles , a London XX service specialist claims to have customers with over a million and a half miles ontheir never opened up Blackbirds usedforcourier duty there . That’s reliable ! Great bikes !!!!

Yep, not sure what is going on in the rev range. My 01 Bird has plenty below 4k, it's not V Twin Aprilia or Ducati down low, but it's linear and snappy. Interesting review, I'm never selling mine. I've had sportsbikes, tourers, but nothing so adaptable or stable at speed.

@Ben From what I've read, the carbs on the early bikes were optimized for flat-out running and didn't draw enough vacuum to open the slides quickly at lower RPM. The lack of low-end power is only noticeable when compared to bikes with more low-end. I had a ZRX, and a ZX-9R at the same time as the Blackbird. Both would trounce the Blackbird in most real-world riding situations (below 6k rpm). Above 6k rpm, there was no contest, though the ZX-9R wasn't far off. The FI Blackbirds may have had more low-end as well (mine was carburated).

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I had a 97 Bird that was bone stock. I remember the SURGE of power that was like a 2 stroke power band. Great bike, unfortunately I wrecked it. Loved it so much thought that I bought another Bird the very next day. this time a 98 that had been modified with K&N air filter, Two Brother Exhaust and someone must've dialed the carbs to match. My 97 was great, but the modified 98 is a little more pissed off at the world. So much more bottom end power. Way more linear power band. All in all it just made the bike much more usable. I also am over 6ft tall. Bar risers are awesome as well as the Corbin seat and beets bags. My buddy has a 2014 hayabusa, loves his bike but every tie he ride my bird wonders if be bought the right bike. Biggest problem with the blackbird is keeping it legal speeds. Its the only bike ive ridden where 90 mph feels like 70. Its a big bike and the throttle is a bit quick....if you grab it too aggressively, it'll line up for a moonshot. Just be smooth, the blackbird is all about smooth...

I have had my 2000 model Blackbird for over 20 years now. It has never been my only bike but it might be the last one I let go. I've done some tasteful mods for performance and comfort, including an ECU, , pipes, clip-ons with a risers and adjustable angles, a double bubble windscreen and a Sergeant seat. Also cleaned up the tail section and replaced a bunch of plastic parts like chain guard, rear fender etc. with carbon fiber parts. I've ridden her from the Canadian border in Maine to the Florida Keys, with extensive time in the mountains of New England, the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mtns. and of course the Dragon. Well over 40,000 miles now without an issue. Smoot, fast, comfortable, reliable. Comfortable on the highway and fun in the mountains. The bike is now my sport tourer and reserved for longer rides as I prefer a lighter bike for every day in my old age. BTW, the other bikes in my stable are an Aprilia RSV Mille and a Ducati Monster 1100EVO.

Sprocket change solved the low end torque issue and the weight drop makes her feel like a 600 absolutely amazing the difference dropping 140 lbs off the bike has made. Also did engine rebuild at 103k and it was still running just fine compression was still good. upgraded w titanium values. The older i get the more i appreciate this bike. I agree, Honda really lost a big market when they refused to build a new higher output Blackbird. Honda just surrendered the class to the Suzuki Hayabusa and then Kawasaki ZX-14. If they had built a bike that was quicker than the ZX-14 and handled and looked better too, they would have sold loads of them. Honda had the ability to build such a bike, but decided not to.

Hey Jon, enjoying these videos! Had a used 98 for 80k+ miles from 99 to 07. Very fast smooth bike. I don't remember a lack of power below 6k rpm. There was a boost there that would power wheelie in first gear. I far too frequently took it near top speed 180 indicated. Too easy. Drop 2 gears at 70 mph and boom you're flying. With a jet kit and ignition advancer I took mine from 135 to 150 HP. dynoed. 99 and newer did go to ram air with the change to FI. Some suspension and gauge changes during the model run. At 6'4" I can't see how you can get comfortable on a lot of bikes, especially sport bikes. My problem was my neck one spring, couldn't take the bend even with VFR bars on. Traded away, but what a ride it was!

Right on, Pete! It is difficult to get comfortable on sportbikes at 6'-4". The ZX-9R fit me best, but it was the most comfortable of the big, hard-core sportbikes. As far as lack of low-end power, it was noticeable when hopping off my ZX-9R, GPZ1100, and ZRX1100. However, the Blackbird was the fastest of the bunch. I may have liked mine more with a pipe, air filter, and jet kit. 😉

The power not coming on until 6k rpm isn’t a BB thing, it’s a Honda thing. You can ride easy and short shift, or you can cruise at 6k rpm (give or take depending on the model) and be ready to ramble. And perhaps no Honda i4 pulls the split personality 6k rpm trick better that the BB. Legend.

Loved the voice over and description on this vid that I've just seen for the first time(October 2023),I bought my first Blackbird last December a 2001 injection model for very low £££ below £1,500 as not standard paintwork.Like the chap on this video said He is 6foot 4 and the riding position is cramped I fully agree as im 6ft 6,not the comfiest ride plus the front forks are mega stiff which give me a hard ride below 60 mph although the forks can be cured with longer springs.I had the Zx10 and then ZZR1100 in late 90,s and there's very little difference between those two with power or speed but the ZZR better design and handling I thought.Only gripe about this vid is the re-playing of the same photos over and over.Otherwise Great vid.

No complaints about your riding impression here. I had sat on a Blackbird in a showroom around 2002. I’m six feet with a 33'' inseam and found it awkward feeling. Then around 2007 I started looking for a big touring bike but still considering a Blackbird at the top of my list. A friend of mine suggested looking for a used ZZR1200 to keep on brand with Kawasaki since I had a ZRX1200 sitting in the shed. Nah, I said, I really didn’t like the looks of the ZZR1200, plus it had the same engine as my ZRX. I wanted something different. So my friend gave me some magazines with all the ZZR1200 tests in them. I took them and read. WOW, the ZZR was seriously fast. Long story short. I found a sweet deal on a low mile ZZR located at a motorcycle shop in Pennsylvania near Ohio. I fueled up the pickup truck and off I went. It was silver and beautiful and a beast. You could ride triple digits with ease. I saw 165 on the speedo often. Which is why, after running afoul with the law and deciding I wanted to live longer, I traded it in on a 650 Versys. The mechanic at the shop said "You’re trading THAT for a 650 Versys?" I said "yeah". But anyways, after seeing your video, maybe I’m glad I didn’t buy a Blackbird. The ZZR was powerful everywhere. More so above 6k but plenty below.

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 It’s big, it’s heavy, but it goes. It’s more powerful than the ZRX, which it got its engine from. The two engines don’t feel anything like each other. Right on, Roger! I plan on doing a road test review of the Blackbird this spring. I think the 186 mph top speed was for the ZX-14. The GTR1400 was fast, but aerodynamics limited top speed. However, it's still plenty quick and so smooth and quiet behind the fairing that it's east to get into triple digit speed without realizing it. We still have places to go fast here, but I try to be selective in where/when to open it up. Cheers!

I listened to this review for affirmation that the forks were terrible, and you delivered. I had an 01' and the fork was so weird. Taking the bike off the stand, they would compress what seemed like 2 inches, which gave the impression they'd be soft. But in reality they were harsh and didn't seem to move at all. It drove me nuts to the point that I had Hyperpro straight-rate springs and Race Tech gold valves put in...which didn't seem to help at all. There were some things I loved about the bike...great build quality, smooth controls, and I actually liked the LBS...but in the end it didn't seem any more powerful and was less exciting than my 97' ZX11 (my all-time favorite big bike) and the hammering through the fork grew tiresome.

It's funny, I have two friends with multiple Blackbirds and they LOVE them. There are certainly aspects I liked. The amount of lean I had to dial in around corners was more than other bikes of the time. The harsh forks didn't help. For me the real deal-breaker was the seating position. I just didn't fit well (at 6'-4"). My friends that currently own Blackbirds are both significantly shorter than I am.

I have a a 2001 model and agree with you on the riding position but of course that is subjective - people describe them as comfortable but I found it a long way from that (VFR bars and peg lowering has helped). But I am surprised by your views on power delivery; I also have a 2000 R1 which is close on performance but the Blackbird is deceptive because it is so calm and linear with the way it goes about it. I know what you mean about 'leaning more' - I found adding a shim under the rear shock mount (easy mod) made a significant improvement without any negative effect on stability.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Stephen! Both of mine were 1997 carburated models, and power delivery was a little different. If I didn't have a ZRX1100 in the garage at the same time, I probably wouldn't have noticed the relative softness below 6k rpm. I should have posted power and torque curves for both bikes to demonstrate what I'm talking about. Keeping the revs below 6k rpm ,where most of my street and back-road riding is done, the ZRX1100 was king. Of course, the Blackbird was king above 6k rpm, on more open sweepers and straight roads.
@8888swatt
@8888swatt Жыл бұрын
@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I'd imagine , never having ridden one, that the ZRX gearing is a bit lower too. The Blackbird gearing always seemed a bit long to me but I guess that is so it could claim the max speed stat. I often think the "fastest production bike this week" marketing target has really hampered the Blackbird (low screen, uncomfortable bars, high gear, "my Busa is a better bike cos it's faster" etc etc) and it distracts from the calm sustained road speed in all condition that is what the Blackbird is really good at - bit like the SR71 I guess - although I wish it had a minimised radar signature like the SR71, that would really help in the speed camera infested UK.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Жыл бұрын
@Stephen Watt The ZRX1100 was definitely geared lower. The Blackbird was optimized for high-speed running (gearing, bars, low windscreen, long and low stance). I don't know how you keep your license on a Blackbird in England.

@Чжикан Ли Those are great questions and worthy of a longer answer than I can provide here. The best advice I can give is to take an experienced motorcyclist or motorcycle mechanic with you to check out the bike in person. The Blackbirds are reliable, but any bike can have problems that aren't obvious at first glance. Don't buy a bike that doesn't run, ride, and drive well at the time of purchase. Go on a Blackbird forum for yourself and see what common problems are. Good luck in your search!

Thank you for your good and honest review of the CBR1100XX. My wife has fallen in love with this CBR, but I have to drive it. Is it a machine that can be used for Sunday trips, on the small roads. I hear you talking about, it must have a lot of RPM And that it has to go far down the bend. I haven't ridden a motorcycle in years, but felt comfortable riding the Suzuki GSX1100f. In the meantime, I have become an old man of 54 years. As for bottom end, it’s no V twin but my ‘98 pulls hard in 6th from 3000. Now this is the only bird I’ve ridden and I did tweak the carbs a bit and changed out the cam chain (which resets the cam timing to factory new) but otherwise it’s completely stock. In fact I never have to spool it more than 6000 to smoke anything on the road. Track would be different but I don’t go there so non issue.

It isn't that it didn't pull down low - it just didn't accelerate as hard below 6k rpm as the other bikes I had in the garage at the time. It is a result of the Blackbird being optimized for top speed with it's gearing and engine tune. At the drag strip or in any straight-line speed contest, the Blackbird was the winner.

I was away from riding for near 40 years before I jumped onto the back of a ‘98 bird. I’m enjoying it but I do find it awkward when it comes to slow speed turns with such weight and tiny bars that I have to lean way forward over the tank to grab. I’m 5’ 10 yet seems like such a long stretch. All my previous bikes had regular sit up bars which seemed so much more natural. Upright bars are available but I’m not giving up quite yet.

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I still want to try the FI Blackbird. All of the "issues" with the bike are simply a result of the design criteria of making it the fastest bike in the world. Top-end power (vs tuned for torque), high-speed stability, and a tucked-in riding position were necessary to achieve the design goals.

I'm on my 4th blackbird. 2 writeoffs and one stolen back in the day. Great advantage in the city now is that, while still one of the very best bikes, it's too much trouble to steal, not worth it. Once you understand the switch between tourer and sports bike at 4000 revs, you get the best of both worlds. Heavy, but so well balanced that you can throw it round like a moped in the city, and the linked brakes are excellent in urban riding, very light touch and responsive. So reliable all you've got to do is walk it past a can of oil every 10K miles. Named, by the way, after the Blackbird spy plane @@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538

Just make sure all the fluids are fresh (including oil/filter, coolant, brake and clutch fluid), all control pivots are greased and that tires/valve stems/fork seals/ brake pads/chain, etc. are good. If the bike pops out of gear or misses shifts, that's a strong sign of abuse. The Blackbirds are pretty bullet proof if well maintained. 137hp? 164hp officially. Fireblades at the time had about 130hp and did certainly no 175mph. Also; I'd point the Bird's strongest selling point to value for money. There are faster bikes, much faster, such as the ZX-14 and Busa. But even the ZX-14R is like 3x the price, likely lower quality, and a highly anonymous look. The Bird is a Lambo of bikes at $3000. Blackbird is also highly underrated, like ZX.

137 hp is rear wheel (not crank) hp. The Blackbird prices are going up quickly. If you find a nice one for $3000 I would buy it. Locally, the first generation Busa can be had for around the same money as a nice Blackbird (around $4500). The Blackbird is a beautiful, fast, powerful, reliable bike. It is also a great used bike value as you pointed out. For me, with any of the "designed for top speed" bikes, they are too compromised where I normally like to ride. If I lived in an area with long, straight roads and no cops, I might enjoy them more. Otherwise, I risk loosing my licence every time I ride them. Cheers!

I haven't ridden a fuel-injected Blackbird yet, so I can't speak from experience there. I've heard they had better low-end. Maybe a better way to put it was that the 1997 Blackbird was tuned for max top-end and was noticeably stronger above 6k rpm. My tuned for low-end ZRX1100 I had at the same time pulled much harder below 6k rpm, which is where I'm revving during most road riding. Obviously, the Blackbird was faster on top.

I've owned two Blackbirds and I really liked them. In a straight line, the Blackbird has the edge. Anywhere else, the ZX-9R has the performance advantage (assuming equal riders).

Hey Jon, really enjoyed the review. I had, (still have but no longer riding), the FI model. And found the power delivery very linear. I think your comment about the large carbs was spot on, the speed of the air flow at low rpms was too slow to make low down power, and this is typical of engines designed to chase top speed. Honda didn't talk up the ram air system, but on the FI models the air intakes faced forward and we're ducted back to the air box and so must have increased the air intake pressure, no? Great that you included your height. Even at only 5'-7" I found the pegs a bit high, and a huge stretch to the bars, but I guess, along with the stacked headlights it was all about reducing that frontal area to reduce drag. I eventually learned to like the combined brakes, I like the honda character of the power delivery and love the super smooth engine. I don't like the ergonomics, it's the only bike I've ridden that can feel cramped and too big, both at the same time.👍

On your last comment, I totally agree. Also, I find it awkward for u turns and the like with its narrow bars and leaning so far forward but on the road it’s very stable and forgiving provided the size and weight is kept in the back of the mind

I honestly don't think you are correct at all with the no power up to 6k rpm, I have a 96 and its an absolute beast from idle up to 10k rpm, infact the blackbird is always praised for the low rpm grunt that makes it just that easier to ride slowly. I just dont get how you got to that conclusion.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 Ай бұрын
Please don't misunderstand. It isn't that it has no power below 6k rpm. However, compared to several other bikes I had at the same time, the Blackbird didn't pull as hard in the 2500-6000 rpm range. Above that rpm, the Blackbird came on incredibly strong - there was a noticeable jump in power at 6k rpm. The Blackbird was also geared tall for top speed, which doesn't help. Both of my Blackbirds were all-stock 1997s in like new condition. I have also ridden a lightly modified 1999, which was an animal throughout the rev range and a similarly modified 2003 which had the same softer low-end as the 1997. The 2003 also came on strong at 6k rpm.

Well, I had a few bikes myself, and I wouldn't change my Blackbird for any, I love her to bits, don't think I'll ever sell it. I did have one of the last ones 07Fi and it was a very different machine compared to the 96 I have today, the 07 was much more docile, this one is a playful brute, one better be prepared when opening up the tap 😂😂

Power commander on my 03 lit up the low end response, quick shifter gets things going in a hurry. A bit of a reach to the bars and the low clip-on's do it no favours, engine throws off alot of heat I like the linked brakes and the handling is predictable, fork oil change transforms the front end as will a YSS shock.

As for the heat, because I didn’t want to melt the Asian aftermarket fairings, I wrapped the header pipe with insulation. I can’t say that’s the why since I have no reference since I never road it before the rebuild but I have barely noticed any heat at all from the engine except a bit when the rad fan kicks in at a stop and even that is quite acceptable.

10W I used Motul (OEM pro Honda SS-8) fill to level 142mm (5.6") from the top of the tube (not inculding the cap). Be sure to work the piston up and down continuously otherwise you may underfill. If you don't know when it was done chances are it was never done. I found after the change rebound was much better. @@colinnicols5387

@colinnicols5387

Yes, the FI’s have it which came out with the ‘99 year model but the ‘97 & ‘98 carbureted models did not because true ram air makes it impossible to get proper fuel/air mixture control and especially on a machine capable of such high speeds like the bird. The FI birds can handle it and take advantage of it due to the computerized control of the fuel.

Own a black 2001 EFI with catalytic converter. I think Honda did incorporate RAM AIR at that time. I also own a Harley Davidson 2019 Fat Boy. I don't think there is anything wrong with the torque from 3000 rpm of the BB. Prior to owning these bikes I have owned a Yamaha MT-10 and a Ducati 1098 Streetfighter. World of difference in the weight and handling department. But I am not that young anymore so I have adapted my riding style for cruising (love that) and for a bit sporty and faster riding (no extremes). But I find myself taking out the BB more often over the FB.

The bike won. And if it doesn't, it's because he was half throttle. There are so many arguments, but no one knows how to prove anything. A bone stock cbr1100xx has 122kw(164hp) at 557 lbs wet. A gtr weighs anywhere from ≈3200-3600 lbs. In hp, giving the gtr it's 3200 lbs low end weight, the gtr would need to be generating ≈750 hp just to have a glimmer of hope. Even if the gtr had a miraculous 500 lbs weight reduction it would still need to generate ≈800 hp to even have a chance to beat, again, a bone stock cbr1100xx. For every 1 hp the bike has the gtr needs 4hp - 5.25hp. This doesn't even take into account cross-sectional area or gear ratio. With a power to weight ratio pushing .225 hp/lb and ONLY A TOP SPEED OF 188, if any real modifications were made to the cbr to increase power, this gtr would need to be generating somewhere around 1000-1100 hp to put up a fight
