This a simple maintenance job that is easily performed by yourself.
If you don't have a fluid vacuum pump a turkey baster type will work.
This task done every year or 20,000 miles will go a long way in pump and rack and pinion longevity.

Yup that’s exactly what I do with my civic and Impreza. Drain it as much as possible, fill it back up between min and max, drive around at least several miles, repeat all steps multiple times. Dollar tree sometimes will have a very good deal on an unknown but quality brand, SMB. Scoop it up when you can

@@LightsaberGoBrrrrrr This method is good but I found a much better method to flush the system in one go. Jack up front wheels, Suck up fluid from reservoir and disconnect return line, hookup return line to tube which goes to a bucket, plug up the reservoir so fluid doesn't escape, add new fluid and turn steering wheel back and fourth with the car off, add fluid so it doesn't go below low mark and once fluid is clean, re-install return line to reservoir and top off fluid, done.

I just found out about that... Got my 2008 civic since 2011 and been driving it and doing other maintenance but never looked at the power steering fluid. No idea if it was looked at in past inspections at the garage. Lately I've been hearing a weird wheezing noise and noticed my power steering is rough when I start the car. Then after a few second it gets better. Also noticed an oil spill on my parking spot. Seems like I got a leak in that system... Now I'll know to do this routinely.

Hello Mate, I have a 2009 Honda Civic. There is a small steering fluid leak and while taking turns or going around in roundabouts the steering wheel shakes a bit. Can you please advice me if this needs to be fixed asap or can i drive like this for a while as i have time and budget issue at the moment?
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 5 ай бұрын
Hello, a quick test would be to properly fill the PS reservoir to its max cold level, go for a drive and see what happens. I don't think the power steering has anything to do with your steering wheel shake. If tire wear is normal looking, how about the wheel bearings up front? Mine were shot at the 90,000 mile mark but the car still drove and handled nice, it was extremely noisy with those 90K mile OEM wheel bearings. You need to make sure there is no steering geometry issues going on like a worn out tie rod end, or strut connections. You could very well be experiencing a rack and pinion going out. Best of luck to you!

You sure this is okay to do? I have the same car as you and my car whines when steering. Will this solve the problem? Let me know
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 3 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly fine to do this. I don't think it will solve your steering whine. On the noise issue, check the belt tension. I know it's a tight spot down there to really get your hand to but it's doable. If tension feels decent, have someone with a bright flashlight look at the belt and see if it stops or slows somewhat as you turn the wheel lock to lock, not too fast but a steady turn to keep drag on the pump. Car in park and emergency brake on of course. If tension is good and the belts slows as you turn (belt is slipping on pulley), it could be the pump failing and/or the rack and pinion. Thanks and good luck to you! Work safe!!

I don't recall how many ounces the reservoir held. I would buy 1 quart (or 1 liter) of genuine Honda Power Steering fluid for your specific vehicle and evac out the reservoir, refill and drive for 3,000 to 5,000 miles, then do it again. I try to do it every 10,000 miles after that. I think it takes at least that long to cycle through the rack and pinion well enough to warrant an evac. Thanks and good luck to you!

@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can google "Mityvac" products, they are probably the largest manufacturer of automotive style evac systems. Some run well over 100.00, but for a small and easily accessable reservoir like a PS system, you could just buy a cheap turkey baster to remove the old fluid. Keep in mind the fluid will damage the baster over time so you may not get too many evacs with it, but they are low cost items. Thank you for watching!

Hey, on my Honda owners manual it says “turning the steering wheel to full left/right lock will damage the power steering pump” can I do this while changing out my fluid ?
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 3 жыл бұрын
I would not do that. I would evac out the reservoir and refill, in a few thousand miles, repeat till you are satisfied then go 10 to 20K. There are no magic mileage numbers, so it's a judgement call. Bear in mind, all vehicle OMs are specifically listing fluids like power steering, transfer case, ATF, and differential fluid changes. Ex. 2017 RAM 2500 transfer case fluid drain and refill at 48 months, brake fluid flush at 48 months, ATF fluid and filters (two filters) 48 months, all those regardless of mileage. I never did like lock to lock operation on anything, including lawn mowers. Thanks for watching and work safe!
