The Honda Civic Type R has finally made its way to America but it does so with polarizing looks and a turbo-four with buzz killing boost lag. Is it just a mess or is there some magic under that overwrought skin? We spent a week with it to find out.

Hello everyone. Thank you for your comments and consistent suggestions to downshift to speed up. That wasn't Brian's point on the acceleration. Here are his thoughts: Hi all and thanks for your comments. I am Brian, the reviewer. Just to clarify... I have driven many VTEC's, including the 9,000 rpm AP1 S2000 and they are wonderful engines that love to rev. I've also owned and driven many turbocharged cars. So yes, I've experienced and understand turbo lag. Turbo lag, or spool-up, was awful back in the '80s and thankfully technology now enables us to reduce that lag such that it's nearly imperceptible in many applications. I should have been more clear in describing my one and only frustration with the Civic Type R which is, overall, a great car. So, to clarify, the Type R's acceleration is very good. But the driving experience is tarnished, in certain situations, by a delay in throttle response. When you drop the hammer at less than stratospheric rpm, it "feels like" turbo lag in that nothing happens for a couple of seconds. True, this VTEC car is happiest at 6000+ rpm, but with a stout 295 lb-ft on tap at 2500 rpm, I expect to feel some immediate response to throttle applications even below 4000 rpm. In retrospect, the problem might be poor drive-by-wire throttle mapping. Regardless the cause, it's a quirk I've not felt when driving the Focus RS, the Golf R, the TT RS or other recent, similarly powerful, turbocharged cars. Is it attributable to VTEC technology? I don't believe so, because it's a momentary delay in throttle response. Is it a deal breaker? Not at all. This is a great car and worth checking out!

I’m 56, and I always wanted a late ‘80s Civic Si, Gen1. I was a poor college student. That was not a fast car but I wanted it so badly. I’m buying one of these. I miss having a manual and I actually like the looks, and it’s a legit serious sports car, and I can now afford it. Hopefully the limited edition. And you do know this set the record for the fastest FWD car on the Nurburgring. It’s as fast as a BMW M2 on certain tracks. The handling, on a race track, can keep up with most anything.

Hey l had a Honda civic CVCC back in the early 70's l currently own a 2019 Type R and had to adjust to a front wheel drive car as l've been a BMW owner for years and many were M cars But l must say this car is a real track weapon l had a few Porsche 944 turbos dedicated track cars and the Type R will make quick work of them and Cayman's for that matter What suprized me the most is the interest l get from the older set as they want to know everything about the car, and yes they love the looks.

Honda has that hesitation or delay when your sitting at a constant speed and then you want to accelerate. I had a 16 Honda accord coupe with the v6 paired with the 6spd manual that still suffered from the same fate. It's how they are tuned from the factory. That's why most people like me will purchase the hondata flashpro or ktuner to bypass the factory limits. I purchased a 2021 TypeR and flashed it with the 93 octane tune and the car is very responsive (supposed 353 HP & 367 lb/ft). But it still has some turbo lag that results in much better acceleration without the need to downshift. I have also noticed the vtec works differently in this motor (k20 c,) than the old k20 and k24. The exhaust cam is the only vtec cam just like the k24. On my previous car a 2017 Honda civic SI coupe, I used an HKS SSBOV, INJEN intercooler+piping, prl downpipe, 27won cold air system, acuity short shifter + bushings and a flashpro and turned the car into a good all around performer. It was actually quicker on the bottom end but still lacked the top end of the TypeR. In my opinion honda limits their cars on purpose with the goal of longevity and reliability in mind. Honda produces balanced cars not high performance vehicles.

His review was pretty good jus his complaints about acceleration is off because ANYONE whose had a VTEC knows that their power doesn't kick in till after 4000rpm that's what's makes VTEC special high reving for more power,can't lie those 4 cylinder vtecs do very well 😉
@cesarespinozaspain
@cesarespinozaspain 3 жыл бұрын
This is a Turbo charged engine. The VTEC only engages above 6k Rpm for the Exhaust portion. and NOT for intake, like the old honda engines. Peak Torque is around 2.6k to about 4.8k Peak Hp is around 5.5-6.4k Rpm. The 2.0 turbo 4 a far different animal.
@edwint1780
@edwint1780 3 жыл бұрын
@@cesarespinozaspain actually this vtec is different. It engages in the lower rpm range to fill in the gap until the turbo is spooled up. Because it's a turbo motor, honda set it up in reverse where it now kicks in down low. Once the turbo is fully spooled up, there is no need for the vtec. The turbo boost provides far more hp and tq than vtec ever could.
@Justin-lc1xz
@Justin-lc1xz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah - this car doesn’t have the traditional Vtec you slobber over. It’s turbo lag.
@EliteGi
@EliteGi 3 жыл бұрын
@@cesarespinozaspain You can definitely feel it kick up a notch at about 5-5.5k RPM. Basically it just means that as long as you're above 2.5k RPM you'll have plenty of power an torque no matter where on the band you are, and it feels linear as opposed to a standard 2 litre turbo
@cesarespinozaspain
@cesarespinozaspain 3 жыл бұрын
@@EliteGi Agree. Power is very linear with minimal turbo lag throughout. Torque is plentiful at 2.5- 6k then it kinda looses it slowly. 3-4.5k is the sweet spot. And the gearing allows you to be in the meaty part of the band.

The Fiesta ST weighs 2700 lbs and has a hybrid turbo. My boost kicks in at 2500 RPM and trims off at around 5000. Good low to mid range boost but not high end. That being said in city or curvy roads I can take off like a Flea with the acceleration. Granted the stock horsepower is 197 but with some mods you can get that number much higher for not that $$$. Upgrading to a bigger hybrid turbo can get you close to 300 HP easy with stock internals and if you drop a big turbo you will see 350+ HP. That being said the cost of a Type R for base price you could buy a FiST and drop all the mods to get better performance than the Type R. Same can be said with the FiST bigger brother the Focus ST/RS. I love my little bunny rabbit. :)

Thank you for being the first person to do an honest review of this car. The acceleration issue is key and no one is addressing it. I had a 98 Integra Type R which was normally aspirated and acceleration was also an issue. Currently my WRX STI also has a lag before the turbo spools up. The only way to get decent performance off the line with either of them is to rev the engine high and dump the clutch which is abusing the car. I think the other people who reviewed this car are just shills for Honda. Based on my two previous cars I don’t think there’s anything special about the Civic Type R.

As a former WRX/STI owner, I will say that the Type-R engine is heads-and-shoulders above the Subarus......in fact, arguably, the WRX twin-scroll engine is FAR better from a driveability perspective than the STI laggy engine. Also, the Type-R turbo engine is hugely different from the old high-revving NA Integra engines, mainly from a low-end torque standpoint. I really wanted the STI (despite its laggy engine), except that it is sedan-only, and there's a reason that sedans don't sell in this day and age......every single competitor of the STI is a hatch (Type-R, Golf-R, Veloster-N, prior Focus-RS etc) and hopefully they will have one in the upcoming generation.

I’m pushing 100k on my 2014 WRX. One thing turbo charged cars don’t like especially my vehicle, is lugging the engine. Lugging the engine will detect feed knocks. It puts a lot of stress on components. (Drop a gear and disappear). Besides that the only main issue with my car was the TOB going bad.

10:03 Disagree, My 2017 has no issues with acceleration, ( On Dry roads above 35 degrees with all season tires) Yes with wet/ very cold /snow/ there is poor traction especially with stock tires! The Traction control will kick in, unless your car is AWD then you will have that issue. The FK8 is NOT a Drag racing car so don't use it like one, getting the perfect launch is difficult to repeat. This car is not about 0-60 and tenths of seconds going straight, but it IS about lap times in tenths of seconds. I have had NO issues described in 10:40 even in comfort mode, hit the accelerator the car moves forward quickly, as with all turbo cars there is some minor lag, but I have never had to down shift to pass anyone, on the street and highway. Peak torque is low in the RPM and the sweet spot it between 3-5K the vtec engages at the exhaust portion around 6K rpm. I can be in 4th gear 35mph on a on ramp following a Prius or SUV who has no concept of merging on a highway. and once I have an opening floor it to about 7k rpm and shift into 6th at around 85+ mph and they are long gone. Now I don't condone speeding but when matching traffic is moving at 75-80 mph 55 mph can be considered dangerous also.

Bent a factory rim. Tire bead held on and kept air. Was a slight vibration at speed. I bought tire and rim insurance so that was covered. Think the dealer wanted $1k for the rim? Insurance paid. Mine is garaged. Can't answer rain problem. There is a rain gutter under that hood scoop, so I don't know how prevalent that problem really is. Maybe owners are removing the gutter in hopes of making the scoop effective. I believe it's there for cosmetics more than function. There may be so aero you gain from the scoop. Hope that helps

Ok, so when I first saw this video I thought... what turbo lag? Then driving today I found there is a delay but I do not believe it is actual turbo lag, it is actually the factory tune or poor drive-by-wire mapping as you said... I played with 2nd and 3rd gear today and that made no difference, the delay is there... you don't really notice it unless you try to notice it. Will a tune fix it? probably? I don't know if I will actually tune my car to find out. It even happens at 4000rpm if you put your foot to the floor... This was in sport mode though. +R mode has a slightly better throttle response but I did not actually observe the delay behavior. I know the car in +R mode is much more potent.

I have a feeling that you could minimize the acceleration lag if you have the ECU flashed. Of course you'd need to have it done by someone who knows their stuff but it seems like the lag could be attributed to something that the ECU is limiting. I had a similar issue with my old supersport bike.

Surprised at the driver's ignorance of how a high hp, low torq, manual operates to acceleration. Down shift while keeping the gas on and let off the clutch. Instant power when you have the skill to do it correctly and efficiently. This driver doesn't even understand this concept. I've learned and driven sticks all my life, so to me, I can have peak power on tap, at any time. I freaking hate automatics, cause you never can get that power on tap, unless you have lots of torq , over hp. Being able to drive a stick properly, becomes a lifestyle. A life style that I very much enjoy. My last stick was a Tiberon with 172hp, fwd hatch. It was nice, but I am now looking for more, for at the moment, I am stuck with a column shift truck. It bugs the crap out of me that I can not shift exactly when I want too, at the exact rpms that I want to accelerate from.

I've driven manuals all my life. No problem, even in the torqueless-bottom-end S2000. My complaint with the Type-R is not that it accelerates slowly from low RPM. The complaint is that when you hit the throttle, there is a lengthy delay before there is ANY response. Obviously the Type-R wants to rev, and that's great. But the issue is, it feels like a delay in the throttle-by-wire. It is a flaw that other manual, turbo cars do not have, and I've driven many of them.

No. It's not the acceleration at 2500 rpm. The frustration is the delay from when you hit the throttle until when that acceleration begins. You floor the throttle, the car considers your request, and eventually it decides to accelerate.

Surprising to hear someone who has never driven a VTEC Honda before wonder where the power is under the cam change, and in this case, the boost too. Honda 7000rpm redline = downshifts. Of course Honda would still purposely tune for low rpm economy, as it's their hallmark. But this car is making more torque (295) at 2500rpm than most any other 4cyl, and he's disappointed... OK. This phenomenon is known to Honda as a "linear power curve".
@bgyt1168
@bgyt1168 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne, and thanks for commenting. I'm Brian, the reviewer. Just to clarify, I have driven various VTEC Hondas over the years, including an AP1 S2000. So, I do understand the need to wind them out. They are wonderful engines, perhaps especially those with natural aspiration. I've also driven many turbo 4-cyl cars. The most satisfying turbo cars I've experienced are those with almost imperceptible turbo lag. The Civic Type R, on the other hand, in certain situations, behaves as though it's burdened with a level of turbo lag that many manufacturers have found ways of eliminating. I get that this VTEC engine is happiest at the far right end of the tachometer. But, the Type-R also makes a stout 295 lb-ft of torque at just 2500 rpm. So, when I drop the hammer at 4000 rpm I expect some response... right now. Instead, literally nothing happens for a couple of seconds. That's either turbo lag, or poor drive-by-wire throttle mapping. Whatever the cause, it can be frustrating. A shame because the Type R is a great car.
