Honda Civic Type R vs Toyota GR Corolla comparison test

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is the latest in a long-line of ultimate Civics, building on its predecessor with improved performance (especially in terms of its chassis) and a classier, more restrained look. The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla, meanwhile, is basically a Skunkworks project that looks like a Corolla but drives like a completely different car, complete with a growling turbocharged three-cylinder and clever, three-mode GR Four all-wheel-drive system. They are similar on paper (four-door hatchbacks with 300-plus horsepower), but as Autoblog Senior Editor James Riswick and Contributing Writer Mark Takahashi discover in this comparison test, they are surprisingly and delightfully different when driven back to back. Which is better and which would you take home? Watch and let us know.

Nope AWD not needed in the type R, no AWD will not make it better. Honda has honed and perfected FWD performance for decades and it smashes the AWD competition. AWD would just make it heavier and more complex

They did misrepresent it a bit in the marketing. Meanwhile, Toyota dealers are scalping would-be owners to the tune of 10-15K. Minimum.. So none of this matters anyways, except for those looking to pay something like 50-70K for a COROLLA!..... No thanks.

Full Throttle track timed both cars, the Type R is a faster car around their course. On tracks that are purely twisty cones the GR is quicker because the AWD can pull it out of slow tight corners.

TOO funny - On my 993 I installed cheap All Season tires (as you pointed out) so it would be a bit more playful on the street & since I toured a bunch with it in the mountains - I encounter snow once and a while & the A/S helped a bit. Coming from a '14 Fiesta ST (Bought new - great fun) I'm on the list for a GR C (Circuit - hopefully) I am done with FWD vehicles so I never did consider the R & I like the look of the GR way better. THX for the comparison.

People that aren’t breaking the rear end loose under power don’t have enough time behind the wheel. I’ve had mine for roughly 1000 miles, and it will absolutely sling the back end out under power in 30:70 in the right circumstances. Very fun, but the car claws its way back to forward push even after a particularly abrupt power slide.
@alexandram9477
@alexandram9477 Жыл бұрын
I may be wrong but the GRC is a FWD biased car and only sends power back to rear axle on demand - up to a maximum of 70% in 30/70 mode - it's not as if it's getting a continuous 30/70 torque distribution.

@AM-uk7jv

Dude, its a FWD based AWD system and the car still has the weight distribution of a FWD car. Power can be sent UP TO 70% to the rear. That does not mean power is always 70% rear, as the 4WD controller still determines how much power is NEEDED for the rear end, and that 70% figure is the MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE torque bias. If the 4WD controller deems it necessary to send that much torque to the rear via sensors, it will do that. The idea that the GRC is some sort of drift machine is laughable, but it's Toyota's fault for marketing it that way.

I think enough reviews are out to get the verdict on these two cars. For starters, neither are slow. Honda is definitely sandbagging the CTR hp numbers, and frankly, so is Toyota. I think both cars are making 10 - 15 more hp than advertised. On tracks with long straights and sweeping corners, the CTR is every bit as fast and even faster than the GR Corolla. However, on tracks with tighter turns, the GRC ears the CTR alive because it can put its power down much sooner. I think the GR Corolla looks better on the outside, but the CTR looks better on the inside. If it was my money, I’d get the GR Corolla because at the end of the day, I enjoy a more raw experience. It is this reason why I daily drive a 2001 BMW Z3 3.0i manual even though I have 2 other far newer and much more refined cars at my disposal. It is really quite a shame that dealerships are going to kill these cars. I have a 2019 AWD Mazda3 Premium that I was 100% going to trade in for the GR Corolla. But I will not be doing that if dealers continue to mark these things up $10,000 +
@rjhick1
@rjhick1 Жыл бұрын
The CTR is still faster than the GR. If anything both cars are in the same field but the GR Morizo Edition has been slower than the CTR with official track times like the C&D @ VIR The GRCs AWD is setup so that it feels like FWD, the AWD system only kicks in on corner exit, and the system doesn't give you full power to the rear. Theres no cooler for the diff so it can easily overheat giving you the 50/50 split. Either way, you can go wrong with either choice. Its a shame that they are easily obtainable

FWD makes the Civic in my opinion. After spending years driving overpowered RWD cars, the Type R is a breath of fresh air. If you’re a drift king, obviously it’s not the car for you. The Civic with AWD would have more power, probably feel more turbocharged, heavier, paddles, and next thing it’s competing with an M3/M4.

@jamsxr
@jamsxr Жыл бұрын
@@ju4121 what are you talking about, do you just buy a car based on top trumps stats? Firstly, re-read what I said, I’m stating that if you made the Type R 4WD then it would likely have more power, heavier, and be more in-line with an M4… As it is, the type R is more of a drivers car than the M4 anyway. I sold my C63 to get in a new Type R. A 911 or Cayman is what I really wanted but I’ve got a young family so neither worked. For me the Supra doesn’t come close as a track/drivers car, I’ve had a B58 m340i and the engine really doesn’t excite me. If you’re a tuner chasing straight line power figures the Supra makes sense.

It’s strange they would both take the GRC if they were going to buy a track car, since the CTR has won every track time I’ve found online so far. Albeit only slightly. I guess they’re just saying it’s more fun on the track even though it’s slower? I feel like the CTR is very much built for the track. I feel like the GRC isn’t, it’s more for fun stop light to stop light (daily driving) and for a dirt track would be WAY better. Review seems strange to me. Very different than others.

@@layne4376 Think about road imperfections, rain and just overall not ideal conditions. You can drive the GRC at 10/10ths all day and it won't bite you. The Type R feels more refined and fleshed out, but comes at the cost of having to drive with this precision in mind, especially on less-than-perfect roads. I've driven both, I daily one of them; I'm just giving you my thoughts on it. And weirdly enough, under 100mph testing shows the GRC is in fact quicker (gearing perhaps). How often are we all driving over 100mph in the real world? That's what I mean when I say it has that real world edge.

@@layne4376 I'm lagging hard on these replies - my bad. Agreed, the Type R is quicker overall. And I'd honestly hope so considering the GRC is 70lbs heavier and down 15hp comparably (and probably more because of drivetrain loss). I disagree that AWD wouldn't help with varying road and weather conditions, regardless of tire setup; just my opinion though. I’m coming from a Mazdaspeed3 into a GRC. I don't miss the Mazda's wheel hop and suicidal torque steer in the rain lol. What you driving btw?

Toyotas are more reliable as a brand however, I think the type r is going to be a little more reliable in the long run. Built better less mechanical components due to the GRs 4 wheel drive tech that may wear over time and the Honda is already built stronger it seems.

So those "as tested" prices, where were they tested? I am guessing Fantasy land. In the real world both of these cars are wildly overpriced for what they are, even msrp is asking a lot, paying more is just absurd. The whole point of factory hopped up econo cars is to offer affordable fun performance cars with a bit of practically. Neither of these cars are affordable so both are a failure IMO. For what they actually cost there are far better performance cars.

Frankly, the GR Corolla is more of a boy racer type of hot hatch styling,whereas the Type R looks and feels more grown up in this new iteration, and it fits the mature motor enthusiast more than anything, at least for those who have a more moderate budget. 😅✌️

The Type R is trash in any inclement weather or on any broken pavement of any sort. I hated driving my FK8 in the winter or in the rain, even with Blizzak tires on it. No traction, wheel spin for days. Absolutely phenomenal car when it is 65 and sunny outside, though.

CTR In every category by a mile only thing Toyota has over Civic is AWD. CTR drives better better build quality looks better more space better engine. Faster and more capable car at the track. Toyota AWD better traction of the line that’s all the Toyota has over the civic. Traction alone doesn’t make a car automatically better.

The fact that the Type R is bigger, lighter, has more power (less drivetrain loss), wider, and is faster around the track, kind of makes it a no brainer. It’s a more track focused car and a better daily.

@@dougmaverick3287 So for people that don’t deal with snow the majority of the year, the Type R is clearly the better choice. It’s bigger, faster, and lighter. @@BlueFL5 Front-wheel drive my friend is the worst platform for a sports car. Why do you think all the high-end sports car manufacturers including Porsche Ferrari Lamborghini Corvette Koenigsegg Pagani Caterham Mustang Bugatti Aston Martin Alfa Romeo Jaguar all use either all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive platforms it's because front-wheel drive sucks because front-wheel-drive has to put steering breaking and power through the front wheels something has to give. FWD=everyday boring driving.
@BlueFL5

@@dougmaverick3287 then explain to me why if FWD is so bad, how does the Type R overcome this and manage to 1. Be faster than a GRC. 2. Be a more track focused/dialed-in than the GRC according to most comparisons? Minus this one of course. Boring doesn’t make it not fast lol just like Floyd Mayweather was “boring” yet never lost. @@BlueFL5 I never said the gr Corolla is faster on a dry racetrack, but what it is is more fun, more entertaining more raw, livelier, responsive, Etc just like these gentlemen said in the video. I'd rather have the more fun car the more entertaining car then the faster car on a dry racetrack. The GRC would destroy the CTR on a wet race track or a dirt track gravel anything but dry. I plan on getting a car for the racetrack and it will be an ND Miata way better for the track than the CTR.
