This is a tough one! I love the timelessness of the Golf and the fact that it is AWD. On the other hand, the Type R is definitely the more thoroughbred vehicle and would probably be more fun to drive. I think I'd have to go with the Type R. If I'm paying this much for a hatchback I want it to be mental to drive.

I love both cars, I would go with the Civic Type R because out of the two, I like that design more. I completely agree about the taillights on the Civic, I also feel that there should have been a full lightbar connecting. The odd way they just cut off in the middle doesn’t look right (to me). But overall, this Civic looks way better than the last body style. As far as the Golf goes, I actually like the previous version better. Not a fan of the updated headlights and taillights. Had a cleaner look before.

As far as looks, Honda wins this hands down. Both interior and exterior looks amazing.

Nice video! I would choose Type R over the Golf R because comparing 0-60 time on last year it is big improvement from Honda they can do in less than 5 seconds. Civic feels more sporty and when you change to Type R mode the meter absolutely change to gorgeous meter, meanwhile the golf looks normal..

Other reviews said the Golf R climate control is all touch screen and capacitive buttons on the steering wheel, apparently it is clumsy to use. I think Civic interior is better ergonomically.

Coming from a diehard VW fanboy I hate to admit it, but the Type R exterior design looks better than the Golf. It’s more than likely a track day monster, Lotsa fun! I’m currently in a Mk7 GLI, my second after a 17’ Gen 6. I LOVE my little tuned rocket but I could be persuaded to let go of it for a Type R. Hell must’ve frozen over cause I can’t believe I just said that? 😂

This is one of the most underrated channels that I know of.

Golf can’t send 100% of power to rear wheels. It can send max 50% of power to rear wheels. But It can send that 50% of power to one of the rear wheel which makes easy to drift.

This is an easy choice for me. FL5 Civic Type R over the MK8 Golf R. I don't care about AWD because where I live, AWD is not needed nor is it necessary. The Civic Type R is more spacious now than its predecessor sibling and the MK8 the Golf R. The cargo capacity is far more usable than the MK8 Golf R. The customization of the digital gauge cluster of changing the style of the tachometer/speedometer into the AP1 and AP2 gen S2000 style gauge cluster in a full digital format is surreal and will make you feel like you're in an S2000 with those vibes and infotainment system customization too. Regardless of the .2 tenth of a second difference, the new Type R is lighter than the new MK8 Golf R. The new Type R looks cooler (just like the 11th gen Civic Si) than the MK8 Golf R. However, the MK8 Golf R (and the MK8 Golf GTI) will age very well in its own right. The new Type R is my pick and wins it for me.

I disagree: The interior in VW R is a total fail, because of cheap, lifeless haptic buttons, and tons of dirt-and-scratch attracting piano-black plastics. And it is also hard to use due to lack of physical buttons/knobs for basic functions such as AC or sound. Honda has a much better interior from materials and functionality point of view, although its style is more utilitarian. The only advantages for VW (off the top of my head) are a well-designed 4x4 drive, electric seats with memory, heating and cooling, and a sunroof, which make the VW a much more well-rounded and practical car, compared to a single-dimensional Honda.

Type R the car value hardly drop that's all matters to me.

As of now I'd buy the Honda because of the shitty touch system in the Golf but once the facelift is out I'd go with the Golf

Golf R is the best every day car. You can drive it easely in the snow with zero problem. Civic type R is a track day car oriented

Great video and fantastic comparison. Though i'd go with the Type-R and I believe that the tail lights being as they are will make the '23 Type-R remain distinct in this decade of lightbars (especially at night when you see it on the road).

Without hesitation the Civic Type R due to the interior design as the VW just looks cheap now.

If i had the money, I'd definitely go with the Golf R. I'm not skilled enough to reap the benefits of the more track capable Type R, i like how the Golf R has ventilated seats, rear vents, AWD so I don't have to worry about the snow with the right tires, and even though it has less leg room in the rear, it makes up for it in headroom because it doesn't have that sloping roof design.

I sat in both cars. New golf looks and feels horrendous tbh. I was surprised you picked golf over the civic. The golf central entertainment is so cheap especially the touch sensitive fan speed and temperature. The civic is so much better in both exterior and interior.

No mention about maintenance cost and reliability. We all know Honda for the long haul.

For a street car and a daily car the golf R is a better car, as the 4 WD system is brilliant and will get you of the line much better and it’s safer in bad weather, as a track car the Type R is the one to go for.

Good choice Bembli! Ironically I do have the new Gen Civic sedan, and I like it. However the Civic R feels less "functional" than the last one. Its too much of a 4 dr coupe with a fastback, vs a true hatch. The Golf R is true hatch, and still has a "sleeper" quality that I love. You have to go up close to notice its not a normal Golf, vs the Civic R with its racer wing (feels tacked on to me). Also like the fact the Golf R has a DSG which is nice in LA traffic, and is faster than the manual by a few ticks.

Get the Golf R you will save $20,000-25,000 for mods and rent!

The Golf R does 0 to 60 is around 4 seconds and sometimes less depending on the channel or review you watch. The Type R is more of a Track car than a 0 to 60 car. I like them both!

I want Honda to make a cleaner version of the Type R without the wing and a traditional trunk instead of the hatch. The rest of the design is quite handsome.

I went from a fk8 to a mk7.5R yes, the fk8 is fun to drive hard about on the canyon runs, but even with the faux awd haldex, the golf R just feels like it puts the power down so well. when you talk about modifying these cars. my fk8 had a p600 turbo (450whp)and even with p4s it'll spin 40 rolls. the Golf R has no drama. Its a rocket on the everday commute. point it. and shoot. theres no spinning. from a standstill, to any roll. I wasn't convinced on the MK8R and it's looks and the price they were trying to sell them at. I'm happy with the mk7.5. once you go awd you cant go back xD

Type R and Integra are good compact icons and what I love more is that both becomes with 6s manual which nowadays limited but if golf R comes with also with manual gearbox I choose the golf! Otherwise probably Type R are my decision.

I'm finally starting to believe in car designers again. Especially, Asain cars. In my opinion, Kia and Hyundai have been nailing it, especially with their Genesis. Even cars like the 2022 Kia Sorento and Hyundai Sonata, I can't help but look at those cars twice every time I see them, and they're just average cars.

Honda is finally giving us the subdued look of old, one of the reasons they were so popular back in the 90s. Simple and clean. But still...I wouldn't get a Mk8, but I sure like the looks of a Mk6 or 7 R. To me, the original Ek9 was the best-looking Civic Type-R, followed by the FD2.

At my age I would do the Type R as a strictly track and play car but the Golf R I could do everyday due to its slightly more mature looks

The power output of the CTR makes it easy for the Golf R to compensate with awd+dsg. The FL5 is like a GT3 but with 350hp… it’s track-focused? But it aint gonna win any races with a hypothetical 350hp. You would have to seriously mod the FL5 so that it can (out)shine the Golf R. Here’s another fact: 90% of the FL5 drivers won’t have the skills to properly rip it to its full potential, making it even easier for a Golf R MK8 to eat you alive. Let’s not even mention a dig encounter.

If I was comparing buying one only on performance. Then it would be close. But I would still prefer the Golf R because I enjoy 0-60 the most. And I honestly will never take it to a circuit to benefit from the Civics track times. But if I was to compare both cars on everything else. The Golf R is the extremely dominant winner

1. Fl5 still has fake vents both in front and rear. (See auto trader review of 2023 type r) 2. There is no known official time for fl5 type r, no quarter mile, no 0 to 60 released by Honda. (Where did you get that 0 to 60 time from?) 3. Fl5 lost to fk8 at Sodegaura raceway in 2 of 3 laps, while the fk8 had traffic and worn down tyres on the track. (Same driver) 4. There is no nurburgring time for fl5. Only a home Suzuka track, but the beating it took from fk8 at Sodegaura far worse.

The haptic touch infotainment and ac controls is terrible for a long trip compared to the Honda. Those Honda seats fit the purpose of the vehicle. Rear goes to the golf because you get vents USBC etc. Room and cargo easily goes to the Honda. Rear and front looks Honda side a tie. Straight line golf Twisties have nfa rain or snow golf dry Honda.

That's a tough comparison. I personally prefer the GR Corolla over both VW and R. However as many have stated. I think the design of the R is superior than the VW. Inside and out. The VW has that upscale feel though. I think the VW is a better family performance car however the R is a family sports car. Kind of like a Challenger ScatPack/Hellcat compared to a Charger.

When it comes to car body, I think Golf lost a lot of it's soul after generation IV when especially the front started to look very generic. I remember when Golf (usually a used one) was this cool car for a young man and now it's not that much anymore.

the CTR marks up are horrendous.....i watched a video where a guy was trying to trade in his 2021 CTR which he says he paid $48k. The dealership wanted to give $40k., then they wanted $44k plus $25k markup......in total he would have paid $90k!!!!!! That being said, the Golf R is more mature for me, but i like the Civic for reliability

I would choose a Golf over the Civic Type R. Golf's what we call a proper hot hatch, Type R isn't. Also I am pretty sure that Type R would be faster in track, but I mean who's gonna take a car to the tracks everyday . Also, Golf R's faster on the go/in a straight line. So yeah, Golf is the one!😊

Type R for me..

Type R is 100% the better DD. Firstly the interior of the Golf R is *not* comfortable. The CTR has way more comfortable seats. Gloss black on interior plastics is a magnet for fingerprints and dust. It loses that 'premium' look after the first serious drive. The Golf R hatch area is 5sqft less area than the CTR and the entire interior has 10sqft less room. The curb weight of the Golf is also 200lb more than the CTR. In the compact DD category every bit of space makes a difference in the comfort and usability. You better believe I'm using every sqft of space, and the Golf R is just too small to be practical or comfortable.

Always liked Golf R but not this new generation. It looks awful. The front bumper sucks. No knobs inside also. Never thought I say this as I love German cars but the Civic Type R is better this go around.
