Honda CR-V Wheel Hub Bearing Replacement . I could not find any info on how to do this so I made this less than perfect video. It was really inexpensive and relatively easy to do. Thanks to Auto-Zone for the free rentals and Harbor Freight for the cheap tool.

9yrs later, and this is still the correct way to do this job. I just did mine a week ago, and the only thing I did different was I didn't remove the ABS sensor. My car is AWD, so I had to remove the top bolt where the upper control arm attaches to the hub assembly, and loosen the 2 bottom bolts that mount that assemble, and then swing the assembly outward in order to get my axle slid out. Then I put the assembly back in position, and continued on, as you have shown. Nice work!

I preferred your method since there are no removing lots of parts. Other videos are just wasting of time from removing unnecessary parts and wasting too much time. Just a clean removal and installation. Thanks!!

Good Job, no time wasting talking to much as some Videos do.. With the right tools can be done at home.. I'm in the Philippines so Labor is cheap, my local Honda dealer changed my noise bearing, the bearing was the main cost, they removed the whole wheel hub assembly and brought it to a press, took a longer time compared to this as having removing suspension link bolts, brake shoes etc.. But they done it while we watched in a nice lounge..

I'm in the Philippines and had the rear right wheel bearing replaced by a Honda main dealer for about $110 I had watched how they done the job and expected them to follow the procedure in this video, I was surprised when they removed the complete rear bearing hub from the suspension arms, which was quite a lot of work and used a press to replace the bearing. It all went fine but took a lot longer than if they used this method. But perhaps they followed the Honda service manual to the letter. If I had the tools I would have followed this method. Good to watch Video as you didn't mess around talking, the edit was good, saved a lot time watching..

I just did this on my 2006 crv se AWD the right rear bearing had been making noise for a while. I thought it might be the rear differential but after I did the bearing all I hear is my engine and wind noise. This video was exactly what I needed for help even though mine is a AWD it worked the same as the video with the exception of the axle shaft. All I had to do differently was,,,,, after removing the caliper,ABS sensor and rotor(drum) I marked the alignment excentrics at the lower rear knuckle mount then loosened (not removed) the two bolts at the bottom of the knuckle. Then on the top of the knuckle remove the bolt so that the knuckle will swing down allowing you to remove the axle shaft from the hub and support it out of the way. Then swing the knuckle back in place and reinstall the bolt at the top of the knuckle. Then continue with the slide hammer and so on as in the video. Note: When I reinstalled (pressed) the hub back into the newly installed bearing I found out the hard way that your puller (or presser) should be pulling (or pressing) flush from the bearings inner race not the knuckle(like when you press the bearing in) or like in my case you will press to far and destroy your new bearing and have to do it again with a new bearing. Fortunately I had bought two bearings just in case.

Walt Brady Good to know. I have a 2005 AWD SE and mine is right rear as well. So if I understand you correctly. After the new bearing is in, you put your presser through an against the race to put the hub back in, not against the knuckle. How do you know what is too far?
@waltbrady5956
@waltbrady5956 9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Talorico It won't go to far, it will stop when it "bottoms out" . Another way of looking at it is you are really pressing the BEARING onto the hub, its just that the hub is the part that is moving. I hope this helps, it really was an easy thing to do.

Very impressive for your first wheel bearing. I watched to see how you used the bearing kit, but learned a lot. Thank you. That tip about the ABS side of the bearing should save some guys a lot of frustration.

Great video! When pressing in the hub, be sure to use a press disc flush with the bearing itself and not the rear knuckle or else the hub will push the ball bearings out

Great video. You're right, there's not much on the net about how to do this. I have a AWD model and the comments regarding the similarities are helpful as well. I wasn't aware that there was even a 2wd version of the CRV. From what I gather the axle just replaces the spindle on your 2wd version. I guess loosening the top knuckle allows you to pull the assembly out enough to extract the axle. Thanks again, going to give this a try.

Make sure to not press the bearing out the back when pressing it on (there is no "lip" that will stop it) Also the press kit and ring puller were from Harbor Freight, the slide hammer and everything else were borrowed from Autozone. I am still driving this vehicle and the repair is holding up fine. I got the bearing from the Honda dealership directly.

You did a very good job, you had performed the procedure correctly. Additionally your choice of using a breaker bar for removal was right as well. One suggestion if I may is that next time, place your parts in the freezer for a day or half of a day. The difference with installation is like night and day. Good job though nicely done.

finally someone does this job properly does not matter if u have air tools or not but the slide hammer and the bolt and cups tool is the only way to go. so many of these yt vids show guys pulling the whole suspension apart and taking the hub to a press. such a rediculous waste of time. work smarter, not harder. and as a pro technician cutting and breaking the race off the hub is the only way to do it. and dont worry if you nick the hub. its not gunna fucking break in half ffs

Great video -- much appreciated. I'm going to do my front bearings on a 2005 CRV. I am not sure how much difference it will make since I have to contend with the axle. Leo Costantino below suggested that it might be necessary to loosen the knuckle in order to make room to use the Harbor Freight bearing press tool. If anyone has any advice on this specific task, I would appreciate it.

Ruben, thanks for watching. I'm not sure what year and model you have. There are 2 versions, one version has a bolt on hub assembly, the hub would be held on by 4 bolts in the back of the hub. If you have this version than the job is easy, just unbolt the hub and bang out the old lug bolts and put it back on. If you don't see 4 bolts holding on the hub, then you have the version that needs to be pressed on like my video. Good luck!

Thanks for the video. I attempted this today on the left rear on the AWD version. Took around 7 hours after few trips to AutoZone and Harbor Freight. Didn't have right tools on hand. I had trouble unscrewing the screw from the rotor using a vise grip to force it to loosen as the screws started to strip. I got it off after applying torque and hitting the back of the screw with a hammer. Rotor drum came off after hitting it with a hammer few times. Didn't have too much issue getting the hub off with the puller. I saw another youtube clip where the person used a plier to get the snap ring off. I spent a good amount of time trying to get it off with a plier and finally gave up and drove to AutoZone (closer to my location) and picked up www.autozone.com/test-scan-and-specialty-tools/snap-ring-pliers/oem-4-pcs-snap-ring-pliers-set/532465_0_0. This is the only snap ring tool they had in stock so I bought it for $15. Got it off after struggling for another 10min. The next problem I ran into was removing the ABS sensor. After removing the bolt and trying to pry with a flat head, half off the plastic broke off and the sensor was not budging. It look rusted. I didn't want to risk damaging it, so I left it in there hoping to not damage it along the way. I then unbolted the cam and the arms that hold the assembly, no issue with that part. It was difficult to maneuver the axle away from the assembly since the ABS and drum brake line was still attached and there was very little play room. I noticed that the ABS line had some tension when I was trying to remove the axle. Had no issue removing the old bearing and installing new ones. I spent another 30min trying to put the snap ring back with the tool from AutoZone and gave up and drove to Harbor Freight to get the same tool as the one used in the video. I ran into the same issue as the poster where the tip was a little too wide. I used a dremel to trim it. Good thing about this I would not use a snap ring plier that lacks a locking mechanism. HF sold the same exact tool I bought from AF for $3.99 with a different branding. Will be returning that junk back to AF. After putting everything back the car drives smooth and now I get the ABS, VSA light as I must've damaged the sensor line trying to maneuver the knuckle to remove the axle. My advice would be to have all the tools and parts ready in hand. Also when removing the Cam bolt, draw some marking prior to unbolting so that you can align it back the way it was removed. Best of luck to anyone that is attempting this.
@mlim82480
@mlim82480 7 жыл бұрын
Update: the ABS sensor did go bad during the replacement. I did run into some weird issue VSA 2 days later. Drove the car and it was working fine for 5min, then all of a sudden, it felt like it lost power. The ABS/VSA light no longer illuminate, but when I give it gas, I can hear something grinding in the engine bay and the triangle exclamation light comes on everytime I gave it gas. The car sounds like it is going to come to a halt. The car runs fine if I disable VSA. I bought 2 ABS assemblies (left and right) from Amazon from a 3rd party seller for $24. Got it installed today and the car is back to normal.

I have an Ingersoll Rand 7150 1100 foot pounds of reverse torque and I have the 3150 right angle ratchet I also have the mini ductor Venom flameless torch. With all that being said it's about getting the job done with what you have to work with. You have air tools and it took you 5 hours for two hubs LMAO 😂 that's slow dude.

Was this the Front or Rear of your vehicle? What brand is best for the bearing? I am having to replace my Passenger Front Bearing on my 07 Accord 3.0. I am also thinking of replacing the Hub as well. Reason for this is I will be the replacing this bearing for the second time. First time I had a Mechanic shop (Sharp's Import) replace it. Lasted me 2 years. Had it inspected and they suggested replacing the hub, being that the bearing only last 2 years so they believe the hub could be warped, causing the shorter life of the bearing. Estimate was $400 (Parts and Labor) Bearing ONLY replaced and $500 (Parts and Labor) for Hub and Bearing to be replaced.Pretty ridiculous, that's the same amount for getting 4 new tires and having them put on and balanced. It's one bearing. Thanks in advance.

No way in hell you do this so easily with hand tools. Most people will have a rude awakening when they start doing this job and realize the old bearing isn't budging. You'll need to take it to shop to have them remove it or get a good press machine to finish the job. I hope most people aren't foolish enough to think its a simple job that can be done in less than several hours (assuming everything works out).
