Honda HR215 Masters much needed Tune up

This is my personal mower I use 1 or 2 times a year. Last year, the one time I went to use it, it would not start. Not even sputter so I know it was time to take it apart. It turned out to be a couple items. Gelled gas, which I have always stabilized and a loose stud that holds the coil came loose. It looks like this stud has been loose for a while because it was rubbing against the magnet as the rotor spun wearing the magnet down. You cannot replace just the magnet on the rotor, the whole rotor has to be replaced in this case. Since I still had a strong magnet, heck, I'll fix the spacing and continue to use. I planned on doing this video with out talking or talking as little as possible to show the simplicity of maintaining a mower, which I kind of failed, but hey!, We get busy helping other so much, we miss the time to slow down and help ourselves. :-)

Hey - I really enjoyed watching that! I recently got a HR215SMA with electric start. Charged the battery over night but it just makes a buzzing noise when I try it. Still has the pull though. Been in a garage and unstarted since the late 90's. Might try to sell as is or spend some time doing what you did. Still to big and heavy for my needs so I'll still sell it. Got id for free so I had to take it!! Thanks for the video!

It is a commercial body on these mowers that's why they are so heavy to lift. Not junk. If you can get it running really well, then you should be able to sell it for a good price. My brother has blown thru 2 Big Box store mowers in less then 10 years. Mine is over 20 years old. Smokes a tad on start up, but once warmed up, it works great.

Nice video question i am starting a restoration of a HR215 Masters but have a hard time finding the model number on web sites. Is the age of 30 years the reason.

Yes, most likely the parts are no longer availible. I have that issue with my 1994 Wheel Horse 312 Garden Tractor. I look in numerous tractor forums for used parts.

Did you end up getting that screw off the fly wheel? Not sure what that thing is but I imagine you just decided to live with it? Just bought a 215HXA and going through your video to tune it

Yes, all is well and working. This is a mower that may smoke at tad at startup but clears up quickly and runs great. I real work horse.

I've got the exact same mower, and I had to put a new pull cord into the spinner, the electric starter is not doin' anything, and I can get the engine to turn over, but I'm gettin' no spark. No electricity is comin to the spark. Found the mower on the curb, I've got my own round-town-business. Still caint' get this piece of shit to start. Plus, two of the polts holdin the hood and the magneto spinner down are broken, so I gotta hold down the top when I attempt to start it, had it for months but it's pretty fucked up sadly...

Easier to just replace the motor if the housing is still good.

mine runs great but will not start without hitting it with starter fluid. then runs great. plug and air filter look ok. ideas or thoughts ??

Fuel flow issue. There must be a clog or partially clog jet in the carb. When the throttle is put into choke mode, it's suppose to add more fuel to start, but your compensating using starting fluid. So, fuel delivery issue and I would have the carb pulled and completly cleaned out.

@@bigguydiy2184 thanks. Put carb in ultrasonic twice. Removed jet and made sure it was open. Reinstalled and it cranked on third pull. 6daya later had to hit it was starter fluid. Puttin a new carb on tomorrow. Kinda baffling

What kind and what size fuel line did you use?

I used 1/4" fuel line and it has to be labeled for fuel. In millimeters it's 31.75 mm.

I have had one of these mowers for over 30 years and with proper care, maintenance and use I have never had to pull the carburetor off or anything major. They are great mowers and are commercial duty, expensive and used mostly by professional lawn care businesses. I change the oil every year, clean and/or replace the air cleaner filters, clean under deck after each use, sharpen blades yearly and most importantly ONLY use gas without ethanol. I have only had to replace the wheels due to bearings wearing out or wheels cracking, new blades and new air filters. I'm a mechanic and have even been working on small engines for over 50 years.
