Honda HRR 216 mower smart drive self propel not working. Removing the transmission. Variable speed

Watch as I diagnose the smart drive self propel system on this Honda 21'' self propel mower. Right now, the cable looks like it has already been adjusted longer and I adjust it further with no improvement. The belt tension looks good and everything else looks to be in order. That just leaves the OEM transmission as the faulty part.
Watch me remove the variable speed transmission
This job is best left for a better skilled DIY'er or I'd recommend have a pro do it. Some semi complex disassembly and reassembly required.

I have a mower with the exact same problem. It is not worth the cost of a new transaxle. Any chance you can share your farmers fix? I would love to try it.

I got mine working. The brass cone was worn to the point that the lever was hitting the bearing support for the pulley shaft before fully engaging the cone. So i just ground the lever to provide relief for the bearing support so the lever can move farther. The lever is plenty strong enough to remove a 1/8" curved section so it clears the support. I don't know how long it will last but it is working great now. I did not have to remove the transmission to do this.

@@user-eb9gw6lr3i you mean the lever on top that the cable is hooked to? Is that what you ground? (I have exactly the same problem!)

Thank you @user-eb9gw6lr3i I too removed and ground down the "lever" ( the lever on the trans where the smart drive cable attaches). I ground off 3/16-1/4 inch of material. I also removed the trans cover, cleaned out the old fluid, removed the bracket that holds the clutch arm, put a small washer in the cup side of the bracket where the clutch arm pivots, which helped take up more clutch engagement play/slack. Before doing this I adjusted the smartdrive cable "in" (vs leaving it adjusted all the way "out"where it was when the smartdrive stopd working) In all, I only removed the belt shield, both springs, smart drive cable, and drive belt from trans side pulley. At that point I was able to spin the entire transmission / trans axle to get to the bolt securing the "lever" which was easy to remove and grind down. I also recommend draining gas and oil just so you don't have to worry about spills. This is the final fix. The next time I get to the end of the smartdrive cable adjustment there won't be any clutch left and it will be time to buy a new mower and make this one into a pusher.
