Affecting mainly Mk4 Honda Jazz and Honda e owners (but potentially other models post 2020 including the HR-V, CR-V and Honda e), Honda has recalled more than 500,000 affected vehicles in Japan, but none in other regions (yet). However, as owners in (mainly) the UK and Europe have had to pay for their own repairs - for a potential manufacturing defect - we take a look in more detail and ask - if/when will there be a recall in Europe?
At Car-X-Tras we publish new videos (at least) twice weekly being a mixture of car accessory reviews, along with new / used car road tests. So please subscribe to our new channel for EV, Hybrid, PHEV and petrol car reviews and more!

Why no recall in the UK for such an important part - Brakes for heaven;s sake!

I have a feeling it will come. But Honda are dealing with the Japanese market first. Hard to tell, apart from through the Honda e and Jazz forums, which models are affected. Potentially CR-Vs and Civics too, but only Honda currently knows the extent of the problem in the UK, Europe and elsewhere. In the US, they have another issue on their hands though, which is to do with Honda Sensing...

My 2019 Hybrid CR-V had a brake servo failure. Had to wait 5 weeks for replacement part ! Luckily I had an extra paid for warranty but still had a battle with Honda UK for a courtesy car that I was entitled to. Garage told me if I didn’t have the warranty it would be around 2k to repair.

Thanks for watching! Sounds like a good result in the end. Yes, dealing with Honda UK is really battling with Assurant / The Warranty Group AKA TWG Services Ltd who handle the administration on behalf of Honda in the UK. We're happy you still had coverage, although it's not surprising about your courtesy car issue, as their goal is to "limit the damage" in terms of how much is paid out. The less of a hit they take, the more money they make. Unfortunately, when farmed out in this way, loyal customers of a particular brand - if treated badly - will take their business elsewhere. Just glad you got it sorted!

It happened with my 2020 Honda E with 26,000km, which was already out of warranty. €1600 was paid to change the Brake Simultaor and I waited 2 months. The new part is already improved and with a different serial number.

Sorry to hear that you had that experience :-( Hang on to the e though. It's a great little car that will be a design classic in 15 years time (and by then you can probably update battery pack to solid state). You'll be the envy of everyone!

Yes - I have a Honda Jazz 2020 model. Apparently many Honda Hybrid vehicles manufactured in 2020 have this fault. Thank goodness some publicity is becoming available.

@@carxtras Unfortunately my Jazz Crosstar has been undrivable since 30th January 2024. I’m trying to get the Honda garage I bought it from to repair or replace free of charge as this fault occurred during manufacture. Very pleased to see this video - some backup at last 👍🏻

Lots of people on the owners forums starting to experience this failure. Nothing to do with mileage, more of an age related issue. 3.5 years approx. and it fails. The attitude of Honda UK has been appalling. My 72 EX Style still has 3 years of a 5 year warranty left, so hopefully if it happens to me it will be within the warranty period.

Many thanks for your comment! Yes, those Honda owners lucky enough to have received an extended 5 year warranty (this was a special offer a few years back) will be okay. If not, it would be helpful to know which VIN ranges are susceptible. But as Technics999 mentions, no official recall (as yet).

I had this problem in early April this year with my Jazz hybrid. The car was bought new in Sep 2020 and had done just 9000 miles when the fault occurred. As the car was about 6 months beyond the 3 year warranty I got no help at all from Honda initially. I had to pay for a recovery vehicle to take the car to a local Honda dealer as it was not safe to drive. I was informed it would be some weeks before they could obtain a replacement part and I could expect to pay over £2K for parts and labour to fix it. The dealer contacted Honda UK on my behalf and they initially offered to pay 40% of the cost of the part as a goodwill gesture. I did sone research online and discovered that this fault was affecting dozens of other owners of this model and there had been a recall in Japan. I emailed the MD of Honda UK, pointing out that this fault was due to a manufacturing error. As a result Honda eventually agreed to pay for the whole cost of repair, parts and labour although I was still out of pocket having had to hire a car during the period of over 3 weeks that the car was off the road.

Thank you for your detailed explanation! It seems Honda have come good in the end (albeit with you losing out on the car hire, unfortunately). But knowing how some manufacturers gaslight their customers in similar situations, I think this is a great result! As said, we really appreciate you adding this comment, as it seems a significant number of Jazz owners may find themselves in a similar situation in the near future. Otherwise, the Jazz Mk 4 is a very reliable car. Just a shame this part has issues and is extremely expensive to fix (not that customers should have to fork out for a manufacturing error). Hopefully a recall will be issued shortly.

Thanks for commenting James! In fairness, new builds will not be affected by this issue. And, otherwise, the Jazz is reliable as borne out by our 2 year test over 30,000 miles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qd1pltefvtWbfGg.htmlsi=U8AGvfTnKtIbTq1C. We do feel, however, that Honda's customer support and dealership experience is only adequate. Even though Honda is a great brand, employees we encountered at several dealerships showed no passion whatsoever. Shame, as, from a design standpoint, there are some interesting products in the pipeline. Thanks again!

Honda UK & Honda Europe must make a formal statement & fully support existing owners of Mk4 Jazz and other models at risk of this manufacturing fault otherwise owners will not replace their cars with another Honda! DVLA must put pressure on Honda to do the honorable thing & recall cars as well as provide replacement cars if the fault occurs! Surely this is a legal requirement!

And feel free to subscribe if you haven't already ;-) The Clubjazz forum page is also a great resource on this topic and many others (with owners who have had this fault sharing their experiences of dealing with Honda UK). @@carxtras Thanks, fortunately my Dad extended the warranty last year at a cost of £300, it does very much seem like the brake simulator fault, will let you know what Marshall Honda say when they contact us, I would just like to ask about when warning messages are shown on the dash are they logged so that when they connect to a diagnostic device they can see those warnings?

@carxtras 8 күн бұрын
@@toxlaximus3297 - Well done Dad :-) Yes, any fault with a specific module will be recorded in diagnostics. They should be able to tell quickly. The trouble - if any - is availability of replacement parts. If your Jazz will be off the road for an extended time (hopefully not) check with Honda UK about reimbursing car hire etc.

Philip - this seems to be an issue for earlier production models. For MY24 you should be fine - we believe Hitachi Astemo (which supplies the part) has made alterations to its manufacturing processes. Otherwise, the Jazz Mk4 is rock solid in terms of reliability. You should have no issues with it!

Any information for such failures for HR-V 2022 model year (Europe hybrid version) ?
@carxtras
@carxtras 7 күн бұрын
Oleg, the Japanese recall announcement in December did indeed include the Vezel (the HR-V's name in Asia): www.honda.co.jp/recall/auto/info/231208_683.html. That's no surprise given that the HR-V is exactly the same under the bonnet as the Jazz. No European announcement has yet been made, however. If you're having issues with the HR-V (and this particular part) then you should refer Honda to the recall - which was instigated as it was a "manufacturing fault". We'll reach out to Honda Europe and ask if a European recall is on the horizon. Stay tuned!
