If your Honda engine is leaking oil from the plastic cam plug at the end of the camshaft, this video shows how to replace the cam plug on a 4 cylinder Honda car engine and fix the oil leak.
1. Pry the old cam plug out of the engine with a screwdriver.
2. Make sure no pieces of the cam plug broke off and are in the engine.
3. Clean the hole.
4. Press the new Honda cam plug into the hole until it clicks into place. Your Honda engine’s oil leak is fixed.

I had that solid plug, got it from Napa cause the guy said he didn’t have the clip one and it was the same thing. I’ve already replaced this thing once. When I took it out the old one cracked apart and wouldn’t have held any of my oil. I was in a tight spot cause I need my car next day, thought it would be a quick 30 min job cause the EGR valve blocks this on my 04 civic so I took out the air box to access the bolts easier (not necessary but wasn’t risking dropping one of those nuts) I could not jam that thing in there whatsoever, and figured I’d probably have to take valve cover off.. not an option at that time. So I cut that inner lip off, got it in and I guess we’ll see how she holds lol. I imagine with the heat it’ll swell a bit, and I don’t think there’s all too much pressure in the cam/valve area. I ran it and gave it some good revs but only time will tell. Should hold in there at least enough to get me to the parts store for a new one.

I need an update to this story.

@@Joey213141 here’s the update: the plug holds just fine. I did notice about a week ago that the plug had pushed itself out slightly, but still was not leaking any oil. I took a flathead screw driver and pressed it back in easily. So after 6 months it managed to push out maybe an eighth of an inch. If I were to do this again, I think I might cut off all around on both sides and leave about a quarter inch lip on the top and bottom, fold those in to the hole and press it in from there so it has a lip to grab on inside there. However if that is too big of a lip to press in just shave some off till it goes in. Like I said I cut the whole lip off all around and it’s still holding just fine

Your comment helped me out big time last night. Didn’t think to just cut the lip off, could not get that thing in. Tried unbolting the cam at one point but couldn’t lift it much. Thanks

Thank you for the help, I did this on mine, ended up buying OEM replacement cap and it leaked even more so I think I’m going to buy a Aftermarket one that’s seals both ends and install it!

Just did a clutch on an 03 civic, replaced rear main seal while I was in there. Then I noticed oil dripping off where engine and trans mate up. Thought for sure it was my new rear main. But upon closer inspection it looks like it's this seal, oil is running all the way down the front of the motor. Thanks for the video.

Oil dripping down on my motor too so I believe this is may be my problem too. Was going to let the shop find the leak for me first, but gave KZfaq a chance so I could narrow it down and save a few bucks. Replaced the valve cover gasket yesterday and now I will try to replace the camshaft plug today before spending money on a rear main seal leak repair if that is the case.

I wish they didnt goop a bunch of gasket maker on my plug. I would of done this but i didnt want to scratch the block. I ended up ordering a plug you have but the honda OEM one. I took off the valve cover and replaced all the gaskets. Hopefully i dont have to worry about it for another 20 years.

This was amazing man so simple and right to the point. I’m still new on working cars. No need to unplug the battery? When replacing the cam oil plug?
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you need to unplug the battery. There’s nothing electric involved in this job. You just pop the old one out and pop the new one in. Just make sure no pieces of the old part get stuck inside the hole.

@@hoohoohoblin do I add any anti seize or liquid on the camshaft seal plug every time I change it? Or simply replace it and done.

I've been trying to get the plug out but it's being a lot harder to pry out than it looks like in your video. Should I muscle it out and risk breaking it or take off the valve cover to access it better?
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 2 жыл бұрын
Taking off the valve cover would be the safest thing. I bet the plug that is in your engine is one that requires the valve cover to be removed, as it has a big groove at the end of it. You could probably force it out and break it without doing any damage to the valve cover, but taking off valve cover would be safest.

Anyone have any opinion on which plug is better? The snap in plug is easier to install because you don’t need to remove the valve cover. The Felpro es-72476 plug can be installed while the valve cover is removed but does it seal any better than the snap in plug? Anyone have an opinion?
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 2 жыл бұрын
I went with the snap and plug because it’s so easy to install, and the old one lasted more than 20 years. It isn’t leaking now, so I would advise using a snapping plug, and then if it breaks in five or 10 years, replace it with the other kind.

You think that same plug you used will fit in a 98 acura rl ? And were did you buy it from?
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if it would be the same on an Acura. I bet Honda has a different part number even though it may be the same part. I bought this one from the local Honda dealer. There is a link to the same part on Amazon in the description.

What is the right term for that plug ? I tried to order it online and in the auto part store but it seems to have many terms ? (like cylinder head cam plug, rear head cam plug, circular plug and lastly camshaft plug. - I think there is another plug called the camshaft seal plug BUT some store show the same picture) thanks.

All of those things are the same thing. Cams, cam, camshaft, overhead cam same thing. Seal, plug, seal plug etc. same thing. They're probably using many keywords to have their page ranked better to get as many sales as they can :)
