How I ultimately fixed a 2008 Honda Odyssey van rear sliding door with a single washer after refurbing the doors with info from other KZfaq videos.
It's never a bad thing to learn more about the vehicles you own, even if it can be frustrating sometimes. Video assumes you know how to remove door trim.

You just solved an engineering flaw. that hole only needed an imbos design to push that bracket outward. ..Honda owes you a lot of money my friend

Thank you my brother!! You helped me bigtime with my issue. I had an old return spring from a carburetor I used to aid the switch to it's original position. Worked fantastic!!! Now my door works again and my wife is happy..........

Excellent video & case studies. If you have your doors stop working after battery replacement, always check your fuses & reset. I tried most of the ways to reset the fuses including fuse # 7. It didn't address the issue, but it may work on some. Other thing I tried was turning the main on/off switch to off position & opened/closed the problematic door 3 times. While the door was shut, I turned main on/off switch to on position & opened the door from inside & it worked. The problem I have now is the beeping sound which goes away gradually in this frigid winter. There are tons of videos, but I think he did an excellent job unmasking a flaw in the design.

YES! That is exactly my issue, I had problems last winter so we stopped using the door for the most part. Warm weather came along and the problem stopped all together, didn't think much of it. Then the last few days of 20F and we could barely get the door closed.

@@tblakeman yeah I’ve been watching more videos. My passenger sliding door is unresponsive. I think I’ve got a couple things to look into. 1. Take apart the latch assembly, clean it out with some WD-40, and then lubricate with white lithium grease. 2. While I have it apart I’m going to use a multimeter to test the two switches.

Thank you so much for this video! Your video gave me a visual representation on how the handle mechanism operates. A bend in the lower cable differed from your video which led me to inspect the forward latch where the other end of the cable attached. A pile of lubrication and all is working as advertised. Did putting washing as a spacer solve your problem?

That is a design problem. The inner plate is too weak. As you pull the handle for x amount of time it bent the plate on the door. It should have a L bracket to support the plate. The washer will resolve the issue. I suggest to use a small washer and other bigger washer. Good luck

I used to have a 2009 Honda Odyssey EX-L w/res but we started to have electrical problems around 5 or 6 years old. We went to Gatlinburg, TN and we were riding horses except my cousin did not want to so he sat right in front of our van and we were about 2 miles in the woods and our panic alarm goes off 6 or 7 times and he was like i don’t know the pepole that own this car it kept going off. Then when my dad started the van the horn was just blaring not panic just blaring basically like you were laying on it. Then our automatic doors didn’t want to work then our auto tailgate didn’t want to work. So when it got about 8 or 9 years old we got a 2017 Honda Odyssey Touring of June 2017

I have the same problem. I can feel when I pull the handle from outside that the tension isn’t there and that it’s staying open because it doesn’t suck it self close. So at the end just adding a washer to that bolt helped? Did you add washer behind the metal bracket or on top and then the bolt ?

To take that problem interior handle assembly off, disconnect the electrical leads and slide/wiggle the whole thing toward the rear of the van. You need to remove that to get to the screws for the exterior handle. My handle broke--a crappy sintered metal piece that levers a cable broke after years of my daughter abusing it. The outside handle is not connected directly to the inside handle (remember the window runs between them). As to how your interior handle assembly got warped, I can't imagine. Maybe a strong kick would be enough push in the door panel and smoosh that thing? Or the part was run over by a forklift before assembly?

@solorsix, yes, thank you very much for this video! @travisfinucane - I am experiencing the same problem with the latch but now I think I know how it got warped. I live in Michigan and my two sliding doors froze shut recently due to an ice storm with extremely cold temps. As I was in a hurry one morning, I got into the van and pushed against all around the perimeter of the door in order to crack the ice. I'm almost 90% sure I pushed rather hard against the area with the handle and latch assembly. Now I will need to open it up, inspect the assembly and either try to pull it back or simply use a washer. We shall see.

I have the door latched shut and the handle, remote, and button are totally unresponsive, so the door is stuck shut. I want to try this, but have to see if the trim/door panel is removable with the door in the stuck shut position. The rear latch does not pull/suck the back of the door shut all the way, so the rear end of the door is slightly sticking out, not flush.

Doesn't sound like the same issue I was having, however, you will need the door open to remove the door trim at least in my experience.

@@solorsix I had the timing belt/components and a seatbelt replaced at the dealership and they returned the car with the door fully latched closed! I really wanted to ask how they got it to close, but didn't get anywhere near a tech. Maybe I'll call and ask how they did it... Now, I'll only open the door on the manual setting. The 'SLIDING DOOR" indicator light is staying lit now. I've checked the fuses that people and the owner manual say are related to that door, fuses all appear good. My next steps will be to maybe multimeter test the fuses, and or, manually open the door and remove the door panel to check if the actuator is seized up and needs lubricating and to be worked back and forth...or it's common for a little microswitch on the rear latch mechanism to fall and need replacing.

@@mnmurph Not sure what year your's is, but I has the warning light "sliding door" come up and removed the 7.5amp fuse (drivers side, left hand side of footwell) labelled as "back up", making sure key off, remove the fuse for at least 30 seconds, then replace. This resets the sliding door error on the dash, then you can trouble shoot the door issue.

Would having problems with the powerslding doors closing properly cause the battery to drain overnight that's what my new used 005 is doing I have checked the doors yet as I haven't had time I just want an outsiders perspective

Curious. Did you try the washer behind the bolt? Did it resolve your problem? I'm having the same issue. This fix seems simpler than taking out the rear mechanism and lubing. Would like to try to avoid that if I can.

@@gmontenegro9711 you need to clean the front latch on the sliding door. And check your cables like the one on the video make sure that thing does not stock halfway, need to be going back all the way. That cable connect all the way to your latch. If that cable getting stock the vehicle thinks door still open thats why its popping back up.

I have the same problem but the door won’t shut. It’s wide open and no matter if I pull out on the back side of the sliding door or try the auto door shut off option. It’s not moving.

Try pulling the fuses trick. There are how-to videos on it that are super simple. I just can't recall exactly what right now, but it actually solved that. I know that it was the 'clock' fuse behind the little door panel on the front passenger floor area that worked on mine for that issue, but I just can't recall the 'steps' to do it.

I have had many kids and adults alike, not realize that the doors are power doors, so try to manually puuull the door closed as it's already trying to close itself... while I've screamed 'let go, let go'!! That is probably what ends up bending the dang things. Mine are no longer sucking themselves all the way in to close, too. I wished I wasn't disabled, I'd be out there right now trying this. It only makes sense!

Did you ever get "door open" sensors going off on the dash display? (When the doors are clearly closed) My 06 odyssey just started thinking the passenger side sliding door is ajar but it's closed. I can't tell if there's an issue w the latch mechanism in the door or a jam or something w the track? It's causing the interior lights to go on while driving so I've had to turn them off w the master switch by the right hand stalks. Also caused the alarm to go off at random times. Very annoying, I'm sure my neighbours hate it too.

yes, I would get the beeping sound when in gear and passenger slide door indicator lit on dash. This was when the door didn't shut properly though. You can test for the end condition on mine easy. Switch off automatic slide door switch, open door manually with outside handle (being gentle don't let the handle slap back) close door slowly and when you get close to the door shutting, it should pull itself in and latch. If it does that, it's likely my issue is not your issue.
