In this video I cover how to trace an oil leak back to its source, which ended up being a leaky valve cover gasket on this 2000 Honda Odyssey. I show you how to change that gasket and there's also some interesting information on what happens when you don't change your PCV valve.

This is a little bit different but I enjoyed your very nice video and gives me an idea about those valve cover gaskets and gramets, which I will replace when I do the valve adjustments on my van. Great video, I like his videos. While the purpose of the video was valve cover gaskets, it would also be a great time to clean that intake manifold (both my 99 and 01 Odyssey had the manifold EGR port clogged). I put mine in a parts cleaner and cleared up an EGR valve code problem.

Just finished replacing my valve cover gaskets on my 2004 Ody. It took me a whole afternoon with a lunch break. It's not to difficult of as job but don't expect it to be smooth sailing either, just be focused and it will work out. While you're at it might as well change the PCV valve, it's located on the back valve cover

I just did this, make sure when you're putting the vavle cover back on in the back you look at the large gasket to make sure it didn't fall off and lift the cover up and feel with your fingers around to make sure the gasket is still in place. and also very important the spark plug rubber boots, they get pinch up on top of the spark plug well. as you put the cover down use your finger and keep pushing the spark plug boots down all around the spark plug round metal tube. it's basically a vagina around a penis. when you do this for the front cover it's easier to see and you can see exactly how it's getting pinched at the top.

Good video. Where did you buy the valve cover gaskets from? Second, you don't need to remove the air filter and snorkel. Just remove the 4 bolts and nuts that hold the throttle body to the intake manifold. Remove all the bolts for the intake manifold, pull the intake manifold up from the Passenger side (away from the TB) and as you lift the manifold slide the two studs out of the throttle body. That way you don't have to disconnect all that stuff around the throttle body. Also, how did you burn that sensor?
@50sKid
@50sKid 9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks. I've found on this vehicle that the throttle body gasket is a little stuck on both the intake manifold and the throttle body and so I've chosen to just remove everything each time. If I'd had luck taping the TB loose with a hammer the first time I ever took the IM off, I'd have been able to show your short cut method. The valve cover gaskets came with a timing belt kit from eBay. No idea how the sensor was melted (it's not my vehicle).

I replaced my spark plug seals and the valve cover gasket on my 06 Odyssey. When i tried to start it up again, it turned over and then made a buzzing noise, but it wont start. I havent had much success with the advice on the forums. Anyone have an idea what to do or look at? I did not torque the bolts underneath the intake manifold or the valve cover.

Hey, great video. Quick question, should I be tweaking the amount of torque for the manifold bolts if I have a 1/2 inch to 3/8 adapter on my torque wrench? I evenly mounted the bolts and then used my toque wrench at 16lbs per foot as stated here and in my Haynes service manual and I ended up breaking the bolt. Luckily removing it was really simple. But I don't want to break anymore screws since they are about $4 each and a drive a way. Appreciate the video and advice! Thanks! Jose
@50sKid
@50sKid 7 жыл бұрын
No need to adjust the amount of torque usually. Your torque wrench might be out of calibration maybe. I suggest doing the rest by hand. Just make them all equally tight. The goal is not to he-man them on there and break them and to get them all roughly the same.

Probably a really stupid question but I gotta ask. When you removed the really dirty/burnt one in the back, why didn't you clean it up with engine cleaner? I am doing this same procedure and I have a super dirty back one too. I want to spray it down and clean it up but if there is a problem with doing this, I would like to know before I clean it up. Heaven forbid I make things worse...again!

I have been struggling with this one simple yet stupid conversion lol. All of my torque wrenches are in IN LBS rather than FT LBS and according to a torque conversion site 8.5 ft lbs translates to 102 lbs in. I have yet to find a torque wrench that even has lower value than 10 so I am stumped. Can someone provide some reassuring info?

Great video! I have an 06 Odyssey w/188K miles that is leaking in the sample places as your friends Ody. I took it to a shop and they said the oil pan gasket was leaking so they replaced it. When I picked it up they said if it continues to leak then the valve cover gaskets are probably leaking. Sure enough when it sat overnight it was still leaking engine oil! Do I change the valve cover gaskets before exploring a possible leaking rear main gasket? Did you make a video on changing the rear main video for an Odyssey?
@50sKid

+Jake Bair Valve covers are a good thing to change, particularly the rear one as you see in this video. The rear main seal also needs to be changed on my friend's van but it is a huge job and we're not doing it until the next time the shitty transmission needs to be rebuilt.

Hi,On a scheduled oil change (Honda Accord 2005 V6), local mechanic says there is an oil leak and the Valve cover gasket needs to be changed and then, "we will take it from there". When he said, "we will take it from there", it makes me uncomfortable -- a disclaimer of sorts. Says, will take 4 hours and wants to charge $500. Seems like excessive from my unscientific internet research. I have placed newspaper cover all night under the front of the car and I don't see any leak.Couple of questions:1. If there is an oil leak, is it possible for it to not shown overnight on the ground ?2. If I don't have it fixed and let it run, can it become a bigger problem ($) over timeAny suggestion is appreciated. Thanks !

+Alag “Raul” Janah Wow, I haven't watched this video in a while. I was kinda rambling at the beginning. Anyway, you can run your car with a leaking valve cover for a very long time. The only time you actually need to change it is if it's starting to cause vacuum leaks, but that is unlikely with the design of the PCV system on this vehicle. If you aren't seeing oil on the ground the next day, forget about it man--you are alright for now. If you start seeing oil on the ground, then you can think about it. There is a book that tells mechanics how long each job takes, for example it might be 3.2 hours for this job, and an honest shop should not be wildly different than that. One way to confirm is to call another shop, preferably one who works on Hondas, and ask how many hours it would take to change both valve cover gaskets (there are two on this V6 engine). Btw, the fact that he has said replace the valve cover and take it from there means that he's not really sure that is the source, and as I look back on my video, I must admit I wasn't absolutely sure it was the source of the leak either. I was making the best educated guess I could because I could see caked dirt below the valve cover. As of now, I do believe the car in the video has a leaking rear main seal, btw. That's the source of the oil on the transmission side at the beginning of the video.
@50sKid
@50sKid 8 жыл бұрын
+50sKid Btw, $500 for 4 hours is $125 which is like ouch--you can find a good independent shop who would charge $70-80/hour I think. This is a very simple job for most mechanics, anybody can do it.

I had used aftermarket gaskets and RTV after doing a valve gap inspection and correcting a few .. this time I'll use Honda OEM and no RTV. I was doing a "round robin" mtc tour at 105k mi. ..
