Welcome to our Early Winter 2023 Scooter Meet-up! We were all going stir-crazy and needed to get out for a ride, so we set the date and place to meet in northeast Texas. We had a great time despite the weather, but the ride back was certainly a soggy experience! Skip around with the chapter markers below.

I love camping in the rain... especially when I can just button up and weather the storms from a dry hammock or tent. Packing up wet camping gear and riding in the rain is never ideal, but that just adds to the adventure and makes great memories! 😉👍 --QM

@@QuasiMotard Yes! If you plan your trip properly,and use the proper rain gear and a good quality tent,camping in the rain is just the best. Find a camping site thats not prone to flooding,somewhere there's a bit of shelter preferably. Make sure not to get the cooking utensils wet. If things don't go well,just have a laugh about it🤣.

Agreed! We don't have any good "standard sized" small bikes here anymore. Several other countries still receive Honda's "AG" bikes for agricultural use that range in size from 125-200cc's ( motorcycles.honda.com.au/models/workrange/agriculturalbikes ). They aren't "true" dual-purpose or enduro bikes in most riders' opinions, but they always fill that role nicely if you don't need to go far or fast. 😉👍 --QM

Okay. This looks like way too much fun. Got my PCX and just breaking her in. Getting brutalized on the fuel economy at "only" 80 mpg so far. I have noticed it has gotten smoother on the acceleration as I approach the 300 mile mark.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Your PCX's fuel economy should improve after the break-in period and after the first oil change. My PCX's economy jumped up ~10% when I upgraded the variator with the Dr.Pulley sliders (lower engine RPM at cruising speeds), and then another ~5% when I installed the Dr.Pulley performance variator. Small upgrades for aerodynamics and minor changes in my riding habits usually yield 107-113 MPG on the highway if I can keep my speeds below 60 MPH, and over 120 MPG in town when speeds are below 50 MPH. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Awesome video. I love my PCX. You definitely inspire me to ride it more than just in the city. Does the QuasiLock keep your phone from shaking too much? And what is that mounted on the right handle bar? Thank you!
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! The Quad Lock mount is very secure, and the phone definitely can't dismount accidentally. The vibration dampener makes the phone appear to bounce around more, but the high-impact vibrations are reduced compared to a rigid mount... so that's safer for the delicate camera lenses in the phone. Here are the pieces that comprise my phone mount: - Quad Lock Motorcycle Vibration Dampener: amzn.to/3huKyLt - Quad Lock 1" Ball Adapter Mount: amzn.to/3hqLvEl - Quad Lock Weatherproof Wireless Charging Head: amzn.to/3uLT79q - RAM 1" double socket arm: amzn.to/2SZOgmD I have my Garmin Zumo XT ( amzn.to/3Oai7Ba ) mounted on the right handlebar using the included RAM ball mount (fits onto the brake/master cylinder bolts. The Zumo XT is a fantastic GPS unit... much more reliable than a mobile phone when cellular data is spotty or unavailable during long trips on rural highways and back roads. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the Forza 300 is a superb middleweight scooter. It has enough power to cruise across the country and tackle interstates with ease. Unfortunately, Honda stopped importing them into the USA in 2016 due to poor sales, so we're left to search the used market to find one in good condition. The only mid- to large-displacement scoots available here in the States now are the Yamaha XMAX 300, Suzuki Burgman 400/650, and the BMW C400 GT. There are other scoots from Chinese and Korean manufacturers, but their quality and reliability can be suspect. I've been holding my breath and hoping that Honda will bring the newer Forza 350 to the States. It was redesigned back in 2019 for the European markets, and now it has ABS, HSTS (traction control), power-adjustable windscreen, and lots of other refinements. Rumors say that we might get the ADV350, which is based on the same platform. I have my fingers crossed in anticipation (along with my toes, arms, eyes, and everything else)! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Looks like you had a great adventure. I think there are many Bias People about scooters. Mostly I think do from 50cc under powered govern machines not keeping up with traffic. But, a good 125+cc setup is a load of fun. They are more convenient to get on and go than even say a small mini moto. I ride and own big HD tourbike, HD Softail, 70's KZ and more. But, I have also a little 50cc Yamaha 4t scooter and find it a blast to go to store or be bop around the neighborhoods. I want to upgrade to the bigger scooter watching this makes me want to upgrade even more. I would do exactly this. Take on little adventures. Looks fun new subscriber inbound.

Which Himalayan are you looking at. The 411 air cooled is a tank, or tractor 24.3 bhp but geared to keep on trucking at lower speeds. The new to be released 450 liquid cooled will allow higher compression and be around 40HP taking care of the USA freeway speeds, the air cooled does fine on most of the world which is limited to 100kph which is 62mph but will struggle in Texas where folks wizz around you at 80mph. The liquid cooled should address Texas drivers on the road. 😜
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I was considering the Scram 411, but I might wait to see if R-E decides to bring the newer engine here to the USA. I might opt for a mild big-bore kit (oversized piston, larger valves, and mild cam profile) for my XT250 that bumps up the power by about 25-30%. The XT just needs a bit more oomph for running highway speeds without straining. Otherwise, I'll just continue with what I have and put more miles on it! 😉👍 --QM

@quasimotard I absolutely love your channel - it has inspired me to take an MSF BRC course, buy a 2023 PCX, and begin exploring my area from scootback - thank you for sharing your adventures! I have a question for you though: Where on the frame do you attach the dry bag that you often mount directly behind you?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, and congrats on getting into riding on that new PCX! That drybag is a DrySpec D38. The mounting straps are wrapped around the rear footpeg brackets/frames behind the side plastics. Those brackets aren't visible from the side, but you can see and reach them easily when seated on the ground next to the scooter. I attach the second set of straps around the mount for the rear top case. The straps are open-ended, so you pass them around a pipe/post and feed it through a loop sewn into the end of the strap. The loose end has an adjustable cam buckle to attach to the bag and cinch up the slack. It's a very secure mounting system that will even survive a 35 mph crash without budging! Neil's 2016 Yamaha SMAX 155 is pulling a custom-built trailer. Neil is a retired welder and machinist, so he fabricates fantastic gadgets and accessories for his scoots. He also has a 2013 Yamaha Zuma 125 with a trailer that has clocked over 50K touring miles on back roads and highways. The initial basis for his trailers is a used scooter or mini-bike frame that reuses the steering head as the trailer's lateral pivot point. He fabricates forward draw bars from the steering neck to attach to the scooter, and then fabricates lower frame extensions that hold the storage box in the middle. The rear swingarm is a custom piece, but he usually repurposes the rear shock(s) and the front wheel to use on the back of the trailer. The trailer attaches to the scooter's frame near the top of the rear shocks (if equipped with dual shocks), or with frame extensions that are welded onto the rear of the scooter frame. These mounts serve as the vertical pivots for bumps and up/down motion. These two different axis allow the trailer to articulate independently from the bike, but the trailer leans WITH the bike in turns because there is no link for yaw (by design, of course). You can see an in-depth walk around of his Zuma's trailer in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nq52p9qJu-DHY2Q.html . Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

We talk about your total pack out weight of 30-45 Lbs .What do you carry under the seat of the PCX. Tools & what else,
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
I usually try to keep my heavier items low and centralized to minimize handling issues. I typically keep my cook kit, power kit, and my road kit (e.g., emergency tire tools, air pump, and other moto tools) under the seat. That centralizes mass and helps to reduce rotational inertia of the bike... quicker steering response and less tendency to tail-wag. If you place heavy items above the bike's center of gravity or behind the rear axle, then it slows transitional response and it tends to make the bike harder to handle in quick transitions. Placing heavy items like tools or water in a top box is always a bad idea... it's like adding a hyperactive toddler to your rear seat. 😉👍 --QM

I really enjoy your videos Quasimotard. I heard you mention the Navi. I have a Navi and other bikes as well. The Navi has a super quiet exhaust which I like. I'm thinking about getting a PCX150. How much louder is the PCX stock exhaust at idle? Would you call it Campground quiet like the Navi's exhaust?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard Жыл бұрын
Howdy, Chip, and thanks for the feedback! The OEM exhausts on the PCX and Navi are nearly identical in terms of noise level. I think the PCX's engine might be a little bit quieter overall because it's water-cooled (the water jacket dampens piston noise). The PCX also starts quieter than the Navi because there is no starter motor, bendix, or ring-gear engagement; the alternator doubles as the starter, so it has a silent, instantaneous start-up. Both bikes are campsite and apartment complex friendly... near zero noise footprint. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The Scooter Cannonball Run (SCBR) is a cross-country endurance event for scooters and small motorcycles that meet the qualifications. The maximum engine displacement is 279cc, and all machines must meet at least 3 of 5 criteria to be classified as a scooter (unless an exception has been granted). The event is always coast-to-coast, swapping directions every other year, and the starting and endpoints vary each time. The 2021 SCBR was a 10-day, 4500-mile timed event from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Eureka, California. You can find all the details here: scootercannonball.com/ . Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

If I'm on a typical road trip on rural highways near major cities, then I don't bother with extra fuel because it's easy to find a fuel station within 20-ish miles in any direction. However, If I'm taking an extended road trip through rural areas, then I'll carry a couple of 30-oz fuel bottles under the seat as an emergency backup. Texas (and most Southern states) are friendly and safe. I've never had any humans steal anything from my campsites while I'm away. Critters are another story... never leave food or other personal effects where racoons, coyotes, or bears can see or smell them! I always put the interesting or valuable things inside my tent (or hammock) to discourage people from taking an interest. We're always armed, so those weapons travel with us and are never left behind unattended.
