Thanks for the valuable information. Past 3 trips on the 2015 P5 were major mountain runs and I came home destroyed! The holidays are nearly over and that's when I get to order the new shocks. Man I sure wish there was someone as knowledgeable as you around here(Rocklin,CA.). Thanks again you are appreciated!

I'm not saying the shocks are good. I know when going fast the machine bounces but honestly at 70 years old I now drive slow and when using the machine for slow trail riding,working and for hunting I really don't have a problem with the way it is.

Great reviews thank you! A big improvement, and many have done this, I certainly have, is disconnect or remove that rear sway bar. It handles & soaks up bumps a lot better without the rear sway bar, which of course when connected it cancels out a lot of the independent rear suspension because it ties them together. When I had my Yamaha Rhino, then they had all those injury lawsuits, Yamaha had no protective bar or doors on the Rhino, and they finally relented and gave Rhino owners new doors, and told dealers & customers to remove the rear sway bar. The reason is, with a sway bar connected, you get little or no body roll, and little or no warning of when it's ready to roll on it's side on a corner. This happened to me and I have a large scar on my left foot. With the sway bar off, you get a little body roll, and a gives some warning when your'e nearing the rollover point. I rarely drive fast enough to need any body roll warning, and my Pioneer 500 handles & turns really well, and soaks up bumps better with the rear sway bar disconnected. Add some good radial tires, and it's a little better. Honda is the best, but are notorious for having stiff suspension. I sometimes think Honda designers & engineers think that all of us are riding our Honda's with 20 year old bodies? My Honda P-500 is a 2015, and I went through a lot of struggle getting all 4 the 2016/2017 updated shocks, and they help maybe 20% On a scale of 0 being no suspension, and 10 being the most soft & plush, I put my stock P-500 at 4, then adding the newer Honda dual rate spring shocks, I'd say it's now a 6. I have an injured back, gets sore riding, Honda is hard on it. I'll probably be ordering all 4 of these new Walker Evans shocks, cost is worth it to me and my back. You reviews on these W.E shocks are one of the best reviews I've ever seen, thank you so much! P.S. Your first review, nice spin around round house kick. When I'm stretched some, I can round house kick getting the bottom of my heels over the top of most people's heads, great exercise and fun :)

Yes! Good for you. The first things I did was take off those side nets, then put on 25" 6 ply radial tires, then disconnect the rear sway bar, then add tons of LED lights, spot, floods, and colored accent lighting hidden, just see the glow not the lights. Then switched to all synthetic motor & gear oils. Just added new front tires, Kanati just came out with 10 ply DOT rated tires. Cactus needles & spines were giving me too many slow leaks on my front 6 ply radials, and the green slime had aged beyond being useful. Here in Arizona, we greatly enjoy being able to get road legal plates, drive the highways, go to town etc. On the highway, my Can Am Commander 800 does 72mph smooth as silk, and what really helps is 8 ply DOT rated 28" Tensor Regulator tires.

I like to turn my dampening way up sp it's slow to bounce back. Almost no bounce back I like a plush ride and alot of travel for some reason slightly firm but high dampening works awsome for me . Good vid man lot of monet to spend on shocks for a honda 500!

I've been looking around for walker Evans shocks for my pioneer 500, which stage did you buy? I did not realize there was so many to pick from lol. I was thinking stage 2 but not sure. Also I talked to Joe about the long travel kit for my P500, but I can't buy them all at same time so my qeustion is how much will the shocks help without the long travel kit? Thanks for help and have great day

Walker Evans only makes one shock for the P500, they don’t over different stages just different spring rates. If your running stock arms you’ll still see a pretty dramatic change in ride. There regular springs for the P5, which gives you 195lb front and 200lb rear will give you a nice ride for all the more travel the P5 has.

This machine is perfect right up until its top speed. I need something that can go at least 60-65 for those long stretches between trail-heads. Wait, before you say something let me explain. Yes, I know it's likely rare that I'd need that speed often - maybe once or twice a year. However, I want to be able to cruise at 50 mph and not feel like the engine is not knocking on deaths door. Sadly, Honda seals their system and there is no way to tune for a bit more speed. Heck, IF this machine could at least touch 55 it would be in my driveway. Same goes for the 700-4. I guess it would come down to finances and what deals are around, but for now I am looking at ATV's. Although, one of these would allow me and my son or wife to go on beach rides and camping.

What are your thoughts on Al Smith's posting (today)on Honda Pioneer 500 Riders Facebook page about straining your a arm mounts to possible failure after installing after market shocks and removing sway bar?
@AppalachianMountainRiders
@AppalachianMountainRiders 5 жыл бұрын
There is merit in his post as those teeth do catch and limit the movement of the a arms. Does aftermarket shocks and no sway bar help in causing the mounts to fail...that I’m not so sure. I bet if you check, most people who have had those fail have had super large and heavy tires. You see the way I ride (and jump...lol) my P5 and my mounts are holding strong with no signs of stress. But I do think grinding those teeth of and using washers for shims will help smooth the ride up more and I plan on doing that to my P5 when I start my build.

@@AppalachianMountainRiders Thanks for your quick reply. I plan to remove sway bar and change to WE shocks and will have to think about removing those teeth. I will using 26 inch tires so hopefully it wont be a problem. Maybe you could do a video on removing those teeth in the futyre?

Did you measure the shock travel? On the jump footage it seems like the WEs compress deeper judging by how low the rear gets to the ground...measure the travel of the shocks themselves, i have a feeling the WEs have more travel

Pe Peroni you would be correct! The WE have around an inch more travel to them. That doesn't sound like much but trust me, I can tell when going over obstacles. The wheels stay planted to the ground now in places where the use to come off.

AppalachianMountianRiders I know it! You're buying for two Hondas. Dang! You mentioned snow. That's probably going to be my first priority, as far as accessories go. Just wondering what kind of setup you use/or are going to get? I have the honda doors and top, tusk rear soft windshield, and windshield from Utv windshields and accessories on the P5. They do a good job at making it pleasant with just the engine heat. I live in central Pa so I know what your talking about as far as snow. I really like the hard doors you can get for the 1000 but they are pricey. I'll probably just get soft doors for it too.

I'm re-watching this video as I get closer on pushing the "ad to cart" button. But I'm a bit confused, and a little bit frustrated. The confusion: I literally need a suspension that can do everything. Tuning is key. I ride in muskeg, an organic lattice of moss, twigs, and water. Sometimes floating over ponds. Breaking muskeg leads to bottomless mires akin to driving through coffee grounds, which may take many decades to heal. So, I need big, floaty tires. I also drive on hills of loess (basically, wind driven dunes from the last ice age, now covered in forest). On these hills tractor trails were carved, and deep channels have been eroded, making the trail very difficult. A three-wheeled ATV can navigate this terrain easily. Last count: the P-500 has four wheels. I also drive in the mountains, where off-camber turns, side-hills and uneven terrain are common. So, sorry to bore you, I know you can't test for all the conditions I already mentioned (unless you plan to visit!) But... in this series, you never showed the difference between stock and W/E over uneven, undulating terrain... ...like rock piles or steep hill climbs over scree. I know it's hard to go back in time (before the long travel kit) but it would be good to know the SLOW performance of the W/E system. I'm not at all interested in jumping my P-500, If I were, I'd have bought something else.

I think if you want to ride trails at a fast pace you would be better off with a rzr or something like it.
@AppalachianMountainRiders
@AppalachianMountainRiders 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed...but the P5 is much more nimble than the faster machines too. I know that I go down trials at 25-35mph that a 50” rzr or wildcat can’t because they’re longer and can’t maneuver quite as well. Sure they have more speed but most I ride with can’t use it. That was a big attraction for me to the P5. At those speed you feel every pebble as if it was a boulder...lol. For those that ride like me they are a tremendous help. But like you said, putting around at slower speed on regular trails the stocks do fine if you don’t get crazy. Thanks for sharing!
