Jen's transmission in her 2004 Honda Civic started slipping real bad and then became un drivable. I looked up the P0700 / P0740 codes and it seems replacing the trans is a typical solution. Let's pour some diesel in it instead and see if that fixes it. I wouldn't recommend 2001 to 2005 Honda Civics. This one is junk in comparison to the 1996-2000 generation imo.
I also ordered this filter amzn.to/47LZaxn to put on the cooler hose and help capture crud in the system.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

Nice little video man, this reminds me of a story from my dad. My dad is a independent mechanic in central Oregon, owns and has run his shop alone for almost 40 years. Repairing mostly Mercedes-Benz and BMW. He tells me about his repairs sometimes and something like this came up, a Mercedes e320 with a Transmission problem, dealer and other mechanics wanted to replace it for 3k but after some testing dad found it was a blocked ATF line. Replaced the line, did some other stuff, 500$. The difference between an independent mechanic and a dealership mechanic.

I'm thankful for you posting this. My best friend brought me his wife's 2003 Civic LX sedan a week ago because it was doing the same thing, just not quite as bad. I drained and filled the trans, drove it, then did another drain and fill. They said it was a major improvement. Then I got a call on Monday that it was back to being just as bad, so I started sourcing a good used or refurbished transmission for them until I found this video. Needless to say, I just picked up 3 gallons of DW-1, a quart of Lucas Trans Fix, and a gallon of diesel. I'll post an update on this comment later tonight once I've finished and let you know if it works out for me. I figured the worst case scenario, my friends are out $100 on this fluid and diesel, and we'd be back to searching for a replacement transmission. Better than jumping the gun and buying a $1,000+ replacement trans AND a ton of labor on my part if this can take care of the problem.
@zachpeterson2135
@zachpeterson2135 6 ай бұрын
Update: It worked great! The high pitched whining is gone. The lack of power (ability for the transmission to move the car & shift gears) is completely fixed. The only issue this one is still having is slight slippage between 1-2 & 2-3 at certain speeds.. But it's minor compared to what it was. Being that these friends of mine just want to get another 2-3 years out of this car, I think I've saved them from either replacing the transmission or getting rid of it and taking on a new car payment now!
@MrSamPhoenix
@MrSamPhoenix 6 ай бұрын
@@zachpeterson2135wow great fix! Do you think another round of this “diesel medicine” would completely fix the transmission? Also, did the transmission have any codes stored?
@zachpeterson2135
@zachpeterson2135 6 ай бұрын
@MrSamPhoenix That car did not have any stored codes. And I ended up running 3 total gallons of diesel fuel through it (probably 5-6 flushes total), then flushed 4 times with brand new ATF each time. With the final fill of ATF, I also added a bottle (1 quart) of Lucas Trans Fix, which I think helped massively. They're bringing it back to me in about a month to replace the timing belt & water pump, so I'll be doing another transmission drain and fill at that time with new ATF and another bottle of Lucas.

This was extremely helpful. More than you know. I've been exactly there. I split open the bmxa trans to change the internal filter. Got it back together. But decided to use a different Trans just like you did. I went through with it and changed the tranny removing it from below. Went the extra mile and cleaned primed and painted all the frame and everything nice. In the end it the replacement Trans didn't work. I gave up and scrapped a perfectly good covic out of frustration. Man I bet that diesel and air trick would have worked for me in the first place. That's why I love you. From my old dirt bike days, to my wife’s macan transfer case, the fluids get goopy and sticky, preventing the disc packs from grabbing, hence slippage. A good flush and new fluid works a lot of the time. Who knew? And much easier and cheaper than replacing a trans or transfer case. Cool video and channel. 👍👍👍👍

This was great Chris. I love a simpler project that brought a great result. I am driving a 2003 Sable Wagon. When I first inherited it from a friends estate, in the summer of 2022, I took it to a local fluid change chain and had the oil and atf changed, and the rad flushed. Turns out, when I had the car to my new mechanic, that the monkeys didn't change the atf. When my mechanic checked, he said the atf had probably never been changed, and certainly hadn't been changed a year ago. The proof of this is how much better it drove and performed after he actually did an atf fluid and filter change. This video hit home. The trans in my car is reported to be a weak link. I think regular changes will keep it on the road longer. You did some great NNKH work on Jen's Civc,

While such a solution would obviously collect the contamination, it will also add additional pressure drop which could have negative effects. Granted so does a clogged suction strainer. But I would be careful about using too small or too fine of a mesh on an inline filter. Just something to consider.

I bought a 2005 Civic Coupe brand new and had 178,000 trouble free miles out of it in the 8 years I owned it. This is almost a 20 year old car that looks like it hasn't been maintained......the transmission failure belongs to the owner.

I remanned transmissions under warranty for Honda for 10 years. That car should have a PLX transmission. They have micro screens in the valve body that are the diameter of a dime that easily get plugged up from clutch material...They also have several BB-sized check balls that have a tendency to wear out the steel separator plates between each layer of the valve body. They can be serviced, but it takes a lot of time and patience to do it. Even after 10 years, remanning just the valve body would take me better than an hour. The clutches inside look just like a motorcycle clutch, but instead of using springs to make the clutch packs grab, it's the trans fluid pressure...So once those micro screens start to plug up, the clutch baskets start slipping.

For anyone interested. I just did this to my 2006 Acura tl with 130k miles. You could hear the whining pump (I think that’s a good indicator if ur in the same boat) I used a donor banjo bolt with transmission hose to connect to the trans filter up top (tl/accord v6 does not have trans cooler )I drained the trans (not running) and replaced the fluid that came out with diesel. I ran it up to temp then shut it off and forced air basically into the filter housing. I did this twice (startup then shut off then use air) before draining the diesel. New grime appeared on the magnetic drain plug! Long story short this process worked! It’s 2/24/24 and I will update when it fails or if I do a filter change and or inspection
@bomatt
@bomatt 4 ай бұрын
I forgot to mention my TL would only have gears for about one minute after cold start. After that it would basically act like a false neutral in any gear.
@mistydav11
@mistydav11 2 ай бұрын
So basically you unhooked the factory line and banjo bolt and used a junkyard bolt and cutoff hose and shot the air in there???? Did you hook the other 1 back up after the reverse bj thern run it???Mine makes the same sound. all gears turn to neutral after 30 or 40 mph, high rpms until I stop and restart then I get another mile or 2 .
@bomatt
@bomatt 2 ай бұрын
You can use your original banjo but I had one on standby. It’s a pain to separate that rubber hose so I just ran a “new” hose and banjo. Reverse bj with half diesel (I actually did 100% diesel bc I had nothing to lose but it messes with viscosity and flow).
@bomatt
@bomatt 2 ай бұрын
Yes I hooked up the original line that runs to the back of the transaxle. Otherwise it would just pump fluid all over the floor. The trick is to push all fluid backwards into the bottom of trans and hope the magnetic drain plug catches it and you drain the rest of the filter plugging material

Glad you fixed that, Jen looked a bit distressed by it, if she's as attached to her Honda like I was to mine I can see why. Round here the old civics like that are one of the few older cars that seems to survive.

The internal filter clogging with clutch material is the biggest issue with these transmissions, because its tiny. But, if its clogged and blocks oil, blowing the clutch material out of the filter is a band aid, the clutches are definitely worn. But I do wonder how long it would last after that. The forums had all the solutions except for pushing air into the lines to clear the filter. I wish I tried that two years ago with mine, might have saved me a ton of time and a rebuild. I just used the oil pump with both cooler lines off to get all the old oil out and get the new oil in through the converter. So good fix!

Man I wish I had seen this video before having the transmission in TSX rebuilt! Brilliant thought to back flush the internal filter. Hopefully this saves someone else a ton of money in shop fees

Jen will be so happy, she's going to do a back flip! Love to see when these experiments work out! Also, Honda used to call their ATF z-something, but somewhat recently updated to the DW-1 stuff, so your memory wasn't off.

It makes sense now that you flushed it but it's still kinda crazy it actually worked, all without having to swap the transmission. Good thinking! 👍

Our 01 civic started slipping a week before you posted this video, and we just did the flush with diesel and backflow with air and it fixed our trans. It's been working fine for three days of pizza delivery. Thank you

I did wonder what you were going to do with the diesel in a clutch, but an inspired idea, I hope the fix holds long term for you and Jen. I am like you, if I come up with an new idea, I give it a go, all things started out that way.
